WP Plugin Needed - searched everywhere [POSSIBLY SOLVED]

35 replies
Im looking for a word press plugin that will do one or two things - either way.

Id like to display certain categories of posts, under a corresponding/matching PAGE.

For example:

On my Wordpress 2.7 blog - if I have created a "page" called technology, when my visitors click the tab that takes them to the Technology page, Id like "posts" from the Technology "category" to be displayed there.

When they go to the "xyz" page, Id like POSTS from the "XYZ" category to display there as well.

I oculd live with ... going to the page and a clickable link list of 10-20 posts from that category were there .... or ....

if the user clicked the sidebar link for that category - that would take them to the page that represented that category, and the posts were displayed - as I desired above.

Seems that by default - WP only knows to display posts or archived posts or catgeoriezed posts on one signle page in the system. Defies logic to me.

Anyone come across such a plugin?

    This is handled by default by assigning your posts to categories. Then, simply use the category pages as you described.

    Is there any reason why this wouldn't work for you?

    If you want an example, visit my blog (link in sig below) and click on one of the categories listed at the top of the page.

    Regards,
    -John.

      John,

      First off - Thank you!!!

      Yes - my posts are ALL assigned to categories. I made my pages with names to MATCH the post categories as well. From there I figured there was a setting somewhere in dashboard to tell WP so display these posts in this category ONLY on this page - no go - cant find that option in Dashboard. WP 2.7

      This topic is all over the net [google / wp.org etc ....] as a desired function, and a lot of psots and replies that No WP does not do this by default - so this is rather confusing. Your site clearly does what I seek to do. Mine does NOT do this by default. Is there a setting for this Ive overlooked?

      Flexibility them does not do it - neither does the Remix2 theme Im using.

      Is this yet another theme related issue? Hrmmmmm ...

      What tells word press to put certain post categories where? Tags / Slugs? [two terms I really dont understnd yet]

      Man I feel ignorant right now!

    A plugin I am not sure about, but you can definitely add the code to the page to show the links of all the posts from a chosen category on a page.

    You may have to do so with the RunPHP or ExecPHP plugin to make it work though.

      If you are concerned that RunPHP or ExecPHP plugins could open up your site to php scripting issues create a template for that page with the code you want within it. Using this approach you can have the page layout and functionality you need without adding more plugins.

    On second thought, try using the "Recent Post" plugin at All Things Seen and Unseen Recent Posts and it looks as if you can select an individual category on various pages.

    I use all their plugins from time to time, just not the way you were looking, but you can configure these quite a bit.

        Going on the OP, I would have said the SEO Siloing Plugin does seem to fit the bill.

        I think this would give you the control over the category landing page that you want.

    There's a plugin called inline posts that allows you to put your posts into whichever pages you want or even other posts. Maybe that will help.

      You may want to check this out as well, it would be a bit more manual work as you have to manually add each post to the page, but it may be just what some people are looking for.

    Steve,

    When you create a post you assign it to a category and as long as you display those categories either as a tab menu along the top (as in John's blog) or as a widget on the sidebar (as on my blog) then Wordpress does this by default.

    BTW, Flexibility theme does do this (has the categories displaying in the sidebar).

    Ah - I see the problem....

    In my theme, I explicitly add the categories that I want listing, using a standard WordPress PHP call. You can also do this by adding the "Categories" widget to your sidebar. PM me if you want more details.

    Whats the URL of the blog you are trying to fix?
    If you do what John has done - then the tabs on the header are actually post categories and not pages. That has to be done at the template/theme level not in the admin.

    Are your posts showing at all?

    It sounds like you are trying to put posts onto "pages" and that doesn't work

    Also do you have a static page assigned? If you do then you need to assign a specific "page" to act as your blog / post page.
    It would really be helpful if you posted the url so we can see what you are talking about.

    oh my gosh what a disgusting blog LOL -- I'm just teasing you (couldn't resist!)

    Hey it looks pretty good - its a good start.

    Ok just as I suspected - you have created all pages

    What John has done is create posts and the tabs you see at the top of his header are actually the post categories - not pages

    This means you need to alter your template header so that it shows the post categories in the tabs instead of pages

    Pages and posts are 2 different things
    So far most of what you have built are pages

    You need to alter your template so it shows the post categories at the top. If you use the widget feature you can get your PAGES to show at the side

    You need to learn the difference between posts and pages
    Pages are static - they don't use categories ... here check out this link
    Post vs. Page WordPress.com

    I know what you are trying to do but you need to put your content on posts not pages and then have the post categories show at the top

    I hope that helps

    And -- keep going -- its going to be an attractive site!

    This is one of the reasons why I like using Joomla -- you can silo a site so easily and keep it organized. I love wordpress but I love Joomla better

      OK Thanks Debbie ...

      Ive been pretty clear on the diff between pages and posts all along, I just thought there was a way to create a PAGE and have POSTS appear in it.

      I never knew there was a way to merely create a POST "category" and that in itself ... would create a navigation tab [a tab like when you create a page] up at the top of the header area.

      So can I have "both" some static pages on that navigation header, and the post categories as navi tabs up there?

      You need to alter your template so it shows the post categories at the top. If you use the widget feature you can get your PAGES to show at the side
      Ok - but how - which template are you referring to?

      Lets assume I didnt create ANY static pages - just for a second, and ONLY categories. So if I were to delete all the "pages" i created, then the theme/template or whatever would automagically KNOW to create a navi tab, and what sidebar could I utilize?

      I notice on michel fortin's blog - he has many categories of posts but only navigation options of ...

      Home | About | Archive | Subscribe | Free Video

      yet he has categories out the wazzoooo [i think] - hes using remix2.0 theme too ...

    A template or theme (pretty much means the same thing) is what gives your site its look. In the admin section of wordpress, you have the ability to change the template depending on what you have loaded in there. You can load lots of templates just like plugins - you can only use one template at a time obviously.

    Lets assume I didnt create ANY static pages - just for a second, and ONLY categories. So if I were to delete all the "pages" i created, then the theme/template or whatever would automagically KNOW to create a navi tab,
    No it doesn't work that way.

    Most themes/templates are coded to display the pages at the top. In order to change the one you are using you would have to change a bit of code in the header file of your template

    In the same section "appearance" where you change the template there is a link that is called "editor" - click that and it will take you to the files that make up your template. It's the header file in that group that will need to be altered.

    You'll probably have to pick which ones you want at the top - categories/posts or pages - I don't think you can do both.

    Personally, I would go with posts at the top and if you still want pages, have them show on the side bar.
    To get them to show up on the side bar you can use the widget function and select which elements you want. Just know that once you start selecting the widgets it will override anything that currently shows.

    I changed the header on this blog so it shows post catetories at the top

      This is timely, because I was just wondering the same thing.

      I want specific pages at the top and within each page, the category (posts) that relate to each page.

      From what I'm reading, this is not possible? I don't want all my categories to go along the top because if I have long names or a lot of them, they will look awful as nav tabs.

    Hi Steve.

    First off it would be a good idea to get your head around setting up Wordpress to display SEO friendly URLs (or Permalinks as they're called). Check out this post for a good explanation:
    Easy SEO Siloing for WordPress Users | The Unofficial AdSense Blog

    You are in actual fact already using categories for your posts, for instance if you go to http://4morereferrals.com/blog/?cat=3 you will see all your posts in the Insurance Tech category.

    It's just that if you had SEO friendly URLs that would make much more sense and be easier to figure out.

    That site is also home to the Silo plugin mentioned earlier:
    http://www.memwg.com/seo-siloing-wordpress-plugin/

    I'm pretty sure that if you used this to create the static pages for the categories as it describes, then you could use those as the static pages your top menu links to and so you wouldn't need to delve into changing the theme files.

    Of course, if you want to have a go at hacking the theme it's a good way to learn how it all hangs together and you will no doubt find that useful at some point.

    I just came across this post and I am about to do something with my blog that may be what you are looking to do.

    I would assign a page for each post you want to put into a specific category and simply choose to not have the page "Included in your Site Navigation"..

    From there you can add a link to the post on the page that you set up for the particular category or subject.

    This way, you can have hundreds of pages that do not appear in your site navigation and the links to these pages can be post under one of your existing pages.

    If this is confusing, PM me and we'll take it from there.

      Mo,

      Thats an interesting approach ... one that I will archive for future use. That is not exactly the system Im trying to deploy here but I can see a use for that system on another site I have in mind.

      Thank you kindly for your suggestion.

      @Debbie - ok I understand your nomenclature better now - template = theme vice versa. Id really prefer to cease hacking theme interneal php and css to achieve the desired results. Im willing to do it where needed, but want as little to do wit hthat from now on as possible. Perhaps this SEO silo-ing method / plug in is the solution - will investigate that before I continue my php masters degree :-) I feel like Im back in the days coding ColdFusion by hand before there was a Dreamweaver and before Macromedia owned it and it was Allaire ... seems like just the other day but that was internet eons ago!

      @Tim - the url scheme was one I saw already - didnt know that was part of the SEO silo'ing technique. I was going to get to that - eventually - looks like that is kinda important to get nailed down first!
      - interesitng note on that ... how to make Keyword rich categories with this URL optimization and still have navigation tabs and site layout that doesnt look like I built it with notebook paper and crayolas?

      Hey - this stuff aint easy to get done totally PIMPED OUT - your first itme outta the shoot. Im getting synaptic frazzle!!!!

    If a correct silo structure is important to you (and it should be) and you think you will have a lot of pages/posts then you really should look at using Joomla instead of wordpress.

    Seriously - Wordpress is wonderful but limited. If you were using Joomla we wouldn't be having this discussion.
    I've used Joomla enough to know that Google likes it just as much as wordpress. I have sites ranking against old established sites and I haven't done any backlinking yet.

      Debbie,

      Thank you once again ...

      I think Im going to stick with WP for the moment. Im not ready to graduate beyond its functionality yet [i dont think] Engaging in yet another new system seems counter productive and I think Im close to having what I need to figure out - in order to take the blog/site from rough test stage and paper to digital in just a few days time.

      Johns site convinces me that

      A> What Im trying to achieve is very do able
      B> Im close
      C> Its inane that this is not either inherent in wp coding from the start or a simple "switch" to check on or off.

      Tim ... Debbie et al ...

      I put the silo style custom post url thing in effect - as per your and others recommendations. Im also using the Wp Siloing Plug In. That takes me 30% of the way there - it will display a list of my category's post if the PAGE name/slug is equal to the post catergory name exactly - i can NAME the category I want it to display as per the docs but I cant get that to work - my syntax is off somewhere.

      I thought Id be happy if ONLY the category page showed a listing of the posts - but, alas Im really not. I dont want the only navigation of my posts categories to pages to be a sidebar widget! AND Id really like a categories posts to be displayed on a CERTAIN PAGE of my liking and in a certain order.

      Technically - this is programmatic Childs Play I know - a query to the posts table in the db and an output command in php with sort order and sequences etc ... [i just dont know the sysntax for that stuff anymore - dont want to either] - Im still annoyed and baffled that this is not a standard function or that no one else has solved this via plug in or something.

      The header template where the navigation bar for my theme appears to be here. Have they given me the code I seek and just commented it out below? Id just need to substitute it in for the existing nav - then Id be like Johns Blog or many of you others?

      Code:
      <!--Dropdown navigation -->
      <div id="nav">
           <ul id="navmenu-h">
              <?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&title_li=');
              // the following line will display category instead of pages in the main menu
              // wp_list_categories('title_li=');
              ?>

            </ul>
          <div class="rss"><a href="<?php bloginfo('rss2_url'); ?>">RSS FEED</a></div>
      </div><!--Dropdown navigation #end -->
      If my assumptions are correct and I did swap out the code above, I bet I lose the cool whizbang drop down nav for -sub categories? or is that an inherent ability/function already in wordpress as well?

        So essentially I need to find away to execute the same code in MY PAGES, that WP by default executes when you select a link off the Categories List in the side bar or widgets or the silo'ing Plug In that merely does the list display thing here:

      Thanks Debbie. I appreciate that PM, I looked over some of the stuff - wow!

      Deb's sites look pretty stellar folks - you might want to look her up if you want a nice blog system.

      Deb, et al ... I know you'll laugh at me but this is just one of those things I know i shouldnt spend more time doing but Im bound and determined to solve the riddle - and I did. It was erally eating at me cuz I knew this HAD TO BE do-able. Its inane that the instructions for this type of thing isnt more prevelent on the web, or that the syntax and discussion isnt a bit more understandable to new users.

      I appreciate everyones feedback and assistance for helping me to puzle this out. Many Many thanks!

      The main goal was to use WordPress and be able to create PAGES, and use the Remix2 theme and templates. I wanted the themes cool sub-page navigation bar effects, but wanted to also be able to display POSTS by Category on certain PAGES that I created. There were stock built-in fuinctions of Wp that would allow me to leverage the navigation bar ALMOST the way I wanted - but it appeared to be a 1 or the other proposition. 1 - you get a nav bar by Category, but no pages. Or you get a top NAV BAR with Pages and No Categories. My solutions allows me both.

      Here's how [ I ] elected to make this work ....

      1. I took the advice of several here and instituted the SEO Silo'ing URL schema - Dashboard | Settings | Custom Structure | in the field for custom structure -
      Code:
      /%category%/%postname%/
      2. I learned where the THEME's template files hierarchy resided. This theme had 20+ templates. Once I correlated where these were and what they did from the wordpress dot org codex knowledgebase - and what Debbie posted and John as well - the light bulb went on a little bit - it was dim but on :-) I soon saw where I could edit the themes PAGE templates in the Dashboard section called ... Appearance | Editor. All the editable PAGE templates made by the theme creater were available on the right hand column of the EDITOR window. Since I now knew where these templates were located, and reading in the WP codex knowledgebase that I could create my own templates based off the theme's... I copied my themes "BLOG" posts template page. This template page allowed me to display the POSTS on any PAGE I wanted by telling WP to "include" this template in its processing. This base template was doing "almost" what I wanted ... it displayed ALL POSTS on any page I elected.

      3. My DASHBOARD has a column on the far right when I create a PAGE, called attributes.
      Dashboard | Pages Section | Add New | "Screen Option" [upper top right = grey image box] - make sure the Attributes chkbox is ticked - this displays Page Attributes. On my blog I can elect via drop down what PAGE templates from my THEME I want to display.

      4. I created by copying my themes BLOG posts template to a new .php file for each category I wanted to display. I gave them similar names to roll wit hthe naming conventions of the theme but remain unique. I saved and upload my copied PAGE templates into the folder tree on the server where this themes other templates for PAGES resided. Now when I go into my PAGE Editor - I see my custom template files in the drop down window. BINGO!

      PS - I almost forgot - you need to change the name of the template in the file itself - not just the files name. Example - this will be at the top of the template - or should be. I simply changed the test after the Template Name: " "

      Code:
      <?php
      /*
      Template Name: Blog Cat Newsletters
      Exclude: true
      */
      ?>
      5. Now I can edit the pages from the WP Dashboard | Appearance | Editor - I see my custom made [copied ] templates.

      6. How to get the new templates i copied to only display the categories I wanted. As they were written by the theme developer, the templates displayed ALL Posts - 7 posts at a time. Here's their code:

      Code:
      <!-- This page currently show 7 posts (showposts=7) per page. Change it to number of posts you want to display.-->
      <?php  = (get_query_var('paged')) ? get_query_var('paged') : 1; query_posts("showposts=7&paged="); while ( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ++; ?>
      I learned about the code
      Code:
      <?php query_posts("cat=22"); ?>
      Using the Query_posts tags BEFORE your templates LOOP, you can limit the category, number or or date etc... of your posts that the LOOP will display.

      So I saw how the theme creators had used the query_posts tag to limit the posts being displayed to only 7 posts and I saw from the CODEX here :

      http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/query_posts

      That I could use it to limit the output to the categories I wanted, and exclude categories of SUB categories as well - which I do have.

      Here's the code I use - your category numbers will differ you need to puzzle those out for your own blog.

      Code:
      <?php  = (get_query_var('paged')) ? get_query_var('paged') : 1; query_posts("cat=3&showposts=7&paged="); while ( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ++; ?>
      The Important part being :

      Code:
      query_posts("cat=3&showposts=7&paged=");
      7. So ... now that the code I needed to accomplish my mission was working and I knew where it should be pasted and how it all ticked, I needed to set it up to work with ALL my category page templates I wanted to use.

      I created a template .php for EACH of my 10 categories of posts.

      Uploaded those .php files to the proper folder under my theme
      wp-content | themes | "YourTheme" | root!!!

      I puzzled out the ID # of each category to insert that # into the above posted code so the query object only displayed the category I wanted on THAT PAGE.

      Im sure that if I had more time / skill / patience I could find the code Id need to make this all happen "dynamically" with some arrays and more complex if then loops - and only had to use ONE CUSTOM template. BUT, this was a simple and fast solution, and one that you could do with a minimal of coding knowledge.

      My post here is an effort to save another pour soul the pain anguish and time Ive spent - now over a week searching and testing a solution - for what I think is a very simplistic and logical feature that should be out of the box - or simpler to implement.

      HTH,

    Another way to come at this would have been to edit the horizontal menu code in your theme to include both regular pages and the built-in WP category pages, instead of either/or. Might be more maintainable in the future as you wouldn't need to create a new template for each new category.

      Thanks Kevin. You do make a great point.

      I gave up on that cuz I pretty much took Debbie at her word - that it was a one or the other proposition. So I looked elsewhere for alternatives. I probably misinterpreted her post.

      Anyhow .. I "bull in a china shop'd" my solution in the end. Im sure its not the most elegant method, but really I was coming up GOOSEEGG for hrs and days here and on the WP forums. Lots of people asking for it - but nary a SOLVED post discussiong how to git r done.

    Hi Steve.

    I have to say I admire your persistance and tenacity in looking for a solution to getting what you want out of your blog theme.

    As is usual with these things there is always more than one way to skin a cat, but I'm glad you're getting close to a workable solution and have been learning about how WordPress themes and plugins work along the way.

    I am always finding out I could have done something differently or better when working with this sort of technology and it's one of the most interesting (and yes, sometimes frustrating!) things I find about working with blogs/plugins/databases etc.

    Well done.
    Tim
