How To Convert a .wav file to .mp4?

Hello Warriors,

Does anyone know how to convert a .wav audio file to a .mp4 audio file
and if possible, to compress the .mp4?

I've been told that a .mp4 will play on any format. Is this true?

Thanks,

Robert

If you are just doing audio I would recommend converting to MP3. I only use MP4 for video files. MP3 is as universal as it gets for compressed formats, everyone will be able to play it back without issue.

There are a ton of free software solutions that you can find on google, download.com etc. If you want to avoid installing anything try this website for an online option.

Download WinFF (it's actually a video converter), it's free and you can download it from WinFF - Free Video Converter - the downloads tab.

It's easy to use. Once you have added the wav file to convert, go to the "Convert To" dropdown selection and choose Audio. Then for the "Device Presets" dropdown selection, choose MPEG4 Audio.

That will produce a .m4a file (which is mpeg4 audio). As Fivealive says, actual mp4 is a video format.

You'll find mp3 options and many more too, to choose from.

      Hi Kate & Fivealive,

      Thanks for your assistance!

Kate, does, .m4a play on all formats? I've heard that the
clarity of the sound is better on the mpeg4 format. Is this
true or does it really matter?

      Thanks,

      Robert

        Hi Keyz

Actually, I have since realised that you can create an mp4 format file from a wav using WinFF. It will just play the audio channel. You can do that by choosing the MPEG-4 output option in "Convert to" instead of Audio. Then you get a number of device presets to choose from.

You'll most likely find more players to play .mp4 files than .m4a. I have never actually used .m4a files, so I can't be sure how widely accepted they are.

With regard to sound quality ... I suggest you download Winff and have a try. I have just done a test and I can't tell any difference between the .mp3 / .mp4 / .m4a versions. Their file sizes are 32k / 30k / 23k respectively. In the old days, file size was often an indicator of quality, better quality meant bigger files; but nowadays with better compression techniques, it is not so easy to make such comparisons.

I doubt that you will notice any difference between mp3 and mp4 if you do your own test. And if that is the case I would stick to the standard, which is mp3 for audio.

        Hope that helps

You should use a free online file converter for converting wav to mp4. I would recommend trying ConvertMagic.com because their free online file converter works great for converting wav to mp4. They also support a lot of the popular audio and video file formats.
