Would you recommend WordPress 2.7 over earlier versions?

Is there any compelling reason to upgrade to 2.7 vs. say 2.6.2?

The reason I ask is because I'm getting ready to do several blogs and I'm familiar with 2.6.2 and all my plug-ins seem to work well with it. I've heard good and bad things about 2.7 but don't want to have to go through the learning curve and the chance my plugins will crap out on me.

Is it really that much better?

People with more WP experience would know more than I do about the differences.

The thing is, does anyone really want to have a bunch of blogs that have to be updated down the road?

WP isn't going to go backwards. It seems to me that if we're going to use WP, we might as well bite the bullet, and keep up to date.

I've been using WP since 2.3 and 2.7 is much better IMHO. It is easier to navigate and some of the plugins I used to use I have been able to scrap b/c support has been build in.

      Just my $.02.

  • I would never have a wordpress install that isn't the most current one.

old versions have security issues with them and you are asking to get hacked by running outdated wordpress installs imho

2.7 also has built in upgrading, which means the future upgrade process will be waaaaay easier once you've gone to 2.7. No more FTP-ing to 15 different installs, or waiting for Fantastico to finally get the latest version!

I use 2.7, but a lot of people do not like it. I recommend just getting 2.7 if you are not familiar with the other versions. You might as well get used to it.

As is already mentioned, the security issues make it important to upgrade. My only problem with 2.7 is that they have once again completely changed the interface. It isn't a problem in itself but I just feel it is better to just improve rather than completely change the look and feel every time.

I've upgraded, and I like it. The admin interface is quite different, but no big deal coming up to speed with it.

Each new version seems to have some security upgrades from the last, so I always upgrade. Sometimes I forget to deactivate my plugins first, and then I have a little mess on my hands, but nothing that hasn't been manageable.

WordPress 2.7 is worth upgrading to. As mentioned above, if nothing else but for the added security features and also the fact that future upgrades are going to be altogether painless because of the built-in upgrade feature.

        Do upgrade. Security updates.

I strongly recommend the Wordpress Automatic Upgrade plugin:

WordPress › Wordpress Automatic upgrade WordPress Plugins

I keep a lot of blogs and it makes upgrading really easy.

The plugin will guide you through the upgrade process, backup your installation and database, put your site in maintenance mode, switch off the plugins, update the installation, update the database, switch on the plugins and take your site out of maintenance mode.

I've heard some people have had issues but it has always worked for me and you have the backups in case of problems.

I love the new Wordpress edition. It's easy to use and very fast. I haven't had any plug-in issues at all.

Additionally, if your Wordpress edition is behind by more than two update, Google could consider your blog a splog and reduce your rankings.

      Hi Steve

I think the new 2.7 is a huge improvement over the earlier versions. For one thing it's more user friendly.

The dashboard takes a little getting used to but the auto plugin installer is a treat to use.

There will always be the critics but I agree what Mike has said about the danger with older blog versions.

Possibly you may want to experiment with 2.7 - (maybe if you have one - a redundant blog) and just use it as test base for the plugins that work.

I know when I was upgrading I had to check a few of the plugins - however those that worked with the 2.6.5's still seem to be OK.

      Regards

      Peter

    Steve,
No there is no "NEED" to upgrade.. Unlike what others post about security, 2.7 was not released due to some security issues. v2.6.5 was a security release. I can not believe how much bad advice you can get from so many people...

This is coming from a programmer

    * Auto Update - Bad idea, its a security risk.
    * A Plugin for Security - Bad idea, the security issues is the coding so why try to hide it with more of the same coding.
    * Upgrade is NOT a must, it is a choice.. Security is the only thing that is a must. You can perfectly run 2.6.5 secured and not have anything to worry about.

2.7 still has bugs and issues, I personally would not suggest you upgrade but you should be running a secure blog.

James - do you recommend sticking with 2.6.x as opposed to moving to 2.7?

      Hi Anna,
Currently at this time yes I do .. What people need to understand is that 2.7 was not a security release it was a "Major Release" notice the version numbers..

2.6.5 - Last Release and skipped all the way to 2.7 and there is talk about 2.8.. If it was a security fix then it would have been released as 2.6.6..

2.7 Does have some issues I have 2 of them installed but they are secured by me also, not by some plugin. I am not running them commercially either. The wordpress I run commercially is 2.6.x ..

The bottom line though is no matter what you run, you better get it secured and not wait for WordPress to do it for you.. Many have done just that and have paid a great price.

So what I recommend Anna is to stay with 2.6.5 and get a secured version of it... Any questions on that PM me for my site.

While being aware of the inherent short-term potential security issues of any major release, I can honestly say that, as a WP user since 1.5, the new 2.7 finally has a "real" backend that doesn't look like it was last updated back in 1996 by someone who knows even less html then I do.

For the past few years I longed for a platform that had the simplicity and power of WP on the frontend, with the more intuitively laid out admin panel that you would find in other CMS platforms like Joomla.

Finally with 2.7, I just about have the best of both worlds. Particularly if your sites or small and/or you've never had security issues in the past, I would recommend moving to 2.7. The inevitable 2.7.x releases will cover the small issues that crop up in the weeks and months ahead.

Is it really worth it ???? So you do not mind anyone or everyone having access to your db and thus your server ??

By allowing that auto update that is exactly what you are doing. It has happened before and nobody can say it will not happen again, wordpress itself was hacked. Now let's suppose you allow wordpress access to your system due to updates. What happens when a hacker gets backdoor access to wordpress without their knowledge and sends out a system wide false update and obtains all logins..

Would you say it is worth it ????

Automation is one thing and it is great to have automation but being smart and secure your site as much as possible is another thing...

The new version took some time to get used too....

But after learning the new layout, it proves to be much more efficient.

It took me some time to get acquainted to it, but to be honest, I'm liking it. It's easy to navigate, many of the plugins are built it (the threaded comments is really good).

Keeping up to date with software helps! So, yeah I'd recommend going WP 2.7.
