RE: Wikipedia.. I REALLY need to do this...

Hey guys,

I have tried a lot of backlinking methods (since thats what I do) but I have lately been thinking of getting some links directly from Wikipedia.

I am just worried about the editorial control they have over there. Even if you have a non-commercial post, it seems to be taken down.

Has anyone successfully done this before? If you guys have any tips, please feel free to share them.

Yeah thats what I thought. It would be surprising to see even one guy get a permanent link from that site.

I feel that it will not be that easy to get a permanent link from that website. But you will never know until you keep testing different ways and you might just get it

do not spam or go against the policies of wikipedia. Read their terms before contributing. Also wikipedia will give you a "nofollow" link. Your website has to be reputed and should be the original source of information.

Haha this is easier said than done. Also I did not realize Wiki gives you a NoFollow link.

Anyways, I never spam, but linking to a link building company from Wikipedia might be enough to get your post deleted, no?

The Wikipedia backlink issue was discussed in a thread about two or three months ago.

The end result: one group of people who were fanatically trying to protect Wikipedia from spam links and other junk content, and another group of people who figured it "sounds interesting... will give it a try" - despite stern warnings that it's NOT going to work.

Hopefully nobody took action on spam-bombing Wikipedia with backlink attempts.

Hopefully nobody will get the bright idea that it "sounds interesting" now, and waste their time giving it a try.

I've got loads of links from Wikipedia.

A few have been deleted. One surefire way is to upload more than one at time. However good the pages are that you're linking to, if you link more than one it's considered link spam. If you are using a free host then the link will be automatically deleted.

The links are only worthwhile if you have a lot of content that needs reading and you're looking for people who are prepared to read a lot of content on the internet.

What kind of websites did you link to from Wikipedia if you dont mind me asking?

Also, were they commercial websites or some "legit" websites?

If I get just 1 link from Wiki I would be happy

You find it very hard to get a link to a website that is IM related since there aren't many IM related pages on Wikipedia.

To get a link you need to add something extra to the page. For example, if you were selling TEFL courses or guidebooks to working in Japan, then a link from a Japanese-related page wouldn't be too difficult. Obviously, a link saying "teach English in Japan" would be deleted as spam. You'd need to write a article about some aspect of Japanese culture and then link to that. Next to the article you have your affiliate links.

Wikipedia links are only really worth it if you need to attract people interested in reading content. They've already proved it by going to Wikipedia in the first place and finding your link.

Another tip is to write an article on your site and then add some detail to the Wikipedia entry citing your article. These are deleted less often.

Very interesting, thanks a lot. So basically, you can even link a Wiki post to a related blog post that you have created, right? It just has to be non-commercial and information..

Creating backlinks at Wikipedia probably isn't the most efficient use of your time. Their editorial policies are byzantine, if not downright draconian, when it comes to linking. You're probably better off posting relevant ads on Craigslist. Also, there's that "nofollow" attribute mentioned above.

Yea, I don't know why they're so hard core over there... oh yea... probably, because people want a "piece of the pie" out of the work of others who write and edit Wikipedia for free.

If you really think that... then you will have to also accept that according to wikipedia editors the net works (really well) when they delete your spammy links

Reminder: a while ago it was in the news that Wikipedia is as accurate as the Britannica. In other words, it's a wealth of accumulated knowledge maintained by volunteers.

Interestingly, nobody ever came up with the (stupid) idea to place their pathetic IM-links in the Britannica. So, why in Wikipedia???

Reminder: The study, by Nature, was of scientific entries only and while Wikipedia contained more errors than Britannica not as many as were expected. The reviewers also pointed out that while there were not as many errors as expected in the Wikipedia entries, the entries themselves were often poorly worded and confused.

Wikipedia offers more than scientific entries, of course, quite a lot of which are of dubious quality. The shennanigans that go on are often the subject of humour in satirical mags such as Private Eye (especially when the IP addresses of authors are traced back to their offices). And the external links are almost exclusively made up of 'spammy links'.

For what is it is, it's extremely well moderated. All links that are suggested are reviewed and if they stay it is because the moderators believe them to add value.

Getting one link from Wikipedia, is better than 10 other from the other high PR but to be fair it is easier to get the other 10 than to get that one.

    1. Find a famous person on Wikipedia
    2. Find some videos of him/her on Youtube
    3. Embed them on one of your pages
    4. Write a 500 word article on Person Centered Psychotherapy
    5. Go back to Wikipedia put a link to your page on it

Works best with famous people who have had something interesting say. For example, Carl Rogers.

Carl Rogers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    carl rogers - YouTube

The best approach would be to call the link "Video of Carl Rogers Therapy Session"

Put some Adsense at the bottom and you'll make about $20 a year. Ad a couple of Amazon links and you'll make about $50 a year. Not much but, at the end of the year you basically earned $70 for a 500 word article.

Many have wasted their time trying.

I know of one person (don't know him) who tried and someone else edited his info and made him look like a complete idiot. In other words, your links may not always get deleted straightaway, sometimes the volunteer editors toy with you first.

It would be highly unlikely to be a wiki mod they take it seriously. Most likely someone else came along and changed the link.

There really shouldn't be any issue of 'trying' to get a link. Find a page, write an article that complements the entry and post an extermal link. That's exactly what the external links are for.

(And since Jimmy Wales is philosophically opposed to altruism he'd agree with me 100%)

Perhaps so...they didn't change the link though, they changed the "facts" to make him look like a fool.

I managed to have an entry under "Superhero" on the big wiki stick for 3 years before it got deleted. It just said Scott Manesis is an Internet Superhero with a link to my personal blog.

I don't know if it was because it was just a small entry on the huge page or they thought it was funny .....or maybe they agreed it was relevant I don't know but it only recently dropped off. LOL
