Site stuck in 10th position (SEO)

Hey all,

I'm new to this forum! I lurked around for a while and recently just registered. I have been working on a local SEO site with 11.2k exact search results in Google, which from what I've read, means it's very low competition. My articles on site has 100% SEO pressor score, and I have added Contact us, about us, privacy policy, and other required pages, as well as a Google site map.

I've been doing a lot of backlinking, including some .edu links, some paid reviews, profile links, a link pyramid, and more... too many to count. I stayed away from the crazy high numbers (7k xrumor links, etc) and stuck to smaller packages in fear of sandboxing. But so far I'm still stuck on #10, which is what I was at before even starting the backlinking process because of on site SEO.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!
Delilah

Edit: forgot to mention it's been about 3 months since I started the site and did the backlinking, so if they had any effect they should have shown by now.

You will need a range of different types of backlinks. Social Bookmarking and backlinks from blog posts are two major backlink types you will need almost for anything to rank well. Other than that Forum posts, Social Media backlinks (twitter, ...) can be effective. Don't forget to make some permanent backlinks on Squidoo and Hubpages as well.

Congrats on being on page 1.

Have you examined the higher ranked sites content and backlinks? this gives you a fail idea of when is required to rank there, can't tel if you packed all of your backlinking in at the start, new domains look suspicious if it gain links too quickly, I have seen pros suggesting as little as 1 link a day at the start. I hear it's best to spread out the linking with a steady pace. Perhaps your site is just getting out of it's probation period.

How can I tell how many backlinks me and my competitors have?

I know the key is to build the links slowly, that's why I didn't ping them, instead I opted for Google to find them on its own. I don't know if this has happened yet because I don't know of any way to check if backlinks were indexed.

I did buy a lot of different types of links, or so I thought. Maybe I need to diversify even more!

      Thanks,
      Delilah

To answer your question you can look at the backlinks you and competitors have in several ways.

    1. SEO Toolbar by SEOBOOK. This gives G page rank, number of inbound links found by Y! Site explorer, domain age, etc.

    2. Do a search on Google for backlink checker and add your url in there then check out your competitors urls.

They may be harder to beat in ranking if the domain age for your site is considerably less than your competitors.

Make sure you have purchased a .com domain name. I have done a few tests trying to get ranked and indexed with various TLD addresses and have found by far the Big G takes a liking to .com domain names.

Diversifying is not a bad idea. Specifically this is the case because each link acts like a popularity vote for your site. If google sees you have 1k links from a specific forum over night there are going to be red flags raised. So do back linking naturally. If these backlinks still have not been indexed try putting up links to the first round of links and see what happens.

i.e. if you have a vid on youtube with a link in the description that has not been indexed yet try using onlywire to bookmark the link.

    Hope this helps.
