Where did you start online? What's your story?

I have noticed allot of people online here talking about how they would like to make money online. Which warriorforum is a great place to meet new people and learn how they could get on the right pattern.

I have personally started doing online marketing when I was only 17 years old and put together my first social networking web site for internet marketers. It was a fail, but it got me into the game. After that, I started to accomplish affiliate marketing and now on to my products.

Let's hear on how YOU got your start in online marketing. I will be posting mine in a reply to this thread. But, this would help some newbies get on track + be interested to hear all the stories.

Hi, I also started when I was around 20 years old in the year 2000. Its a pretty long and interesting story and if you feel like reading it my personal site is below in my sig. I will be interested to read your and others stories because I love hearing success stories of self starters and how others started and are steering clear of the 9-5. Im curious to hear if your parents were telling you to stay in your good pay high benefits job like mine did. Then when I made a good living working for myself they raved at how I made such a good move

I started my blog in 2010 but I had used free Wordpress and Blogger ones earlier...

Success doesn't come easy and cheap, I've had to put in some really long stretch of hours while at other times I just went "offline" for weeks.

I noticed that I get the best results when I consistently dedicate lots of energy to blogging over a period of time.

That's how Income Scene (in my signature) got to the point it is.

Alright everyone, this is how I got started into online marketing.

It has all started when I was just 17 years old working at a call center job of where my mother worked as well. The family had just moved to Georgia and were all in need of a job. My mother and I found this job and have took it together making $8.15/hour, which was above minimum wage.

We had just moved from Florida, so I am all the skateboarder and surfer type of dude at the time. Working in a call center at just 17 just did not fit me at first and I was broke to even buy the proper clothing that I needed. Long story short, a month down the road I get fired for wearing Flip Flops to work. Im the flip flop type of guy, and when im behind a desk for 8 - 11 hours a day, I feel better wearing something comfortable.

Now that I was fired, I was just sitting around the house watching TV, playing video games, and staying in contact with my old friends from Florida on Myspace. I really could not go out anywhere, I had not money to nor a car.

Then that is when it hit me "What if I could make money online?". So I started searching deep into this, studying all the fields of internet marketing and how it all works. Everything that I read told me that I needed a web site to get started. And that is when it hit me that I should create a myspace like web site for internet marketers and gurus.

That is when MyBizLounge.com was created. A social network for business professionals. Now that I have this new social network web site out there, I needed to find a way to boost traffic to it. Some free traffic at that.

I looked into Myspace for some traffic. I found a tool called "Friend Blaster Pro" and just had to get it. I started to search myspace for internet professionals and then would scrape their friends list (hence it would be more internet professionals) and then sending them a message invite to come join MyBizLounge. This was a great start of getting new members. I started to see a increase from day 1. I was averaging around 30 - 40 new sign ups per day and had spiked to attention of some other professionals about the web site. Long story short, this lasted only a couple of month with no revenue being generated. So the site slowly died away .

That is when I started looking into promoting software like Friend Blaster Pro. I would send messages to musicians on Myspace promoting the software with my affiliate link. At first, I was making no money at all with this way. Then I increased the message flow that I was sending out by running the software on 2 different computers (yes, I was the one people hated on Myspace from all the messages). I then started making commission. in fact, my first week I had made around $400 in just promoting myspace software.

I got tired of the $12 commissions coming in when I am selling these softwares for around $50. That is when I got the idea to invest my affiliate earnings into getting my own Myspace software created. A piece of software that would be more powerful for the tasks that I am currently doing.

This software was a success. When I launched it the first day, I had about 3 good affiliates sign up to start promoting it. They loved my new software. It did so much more then what all the others ones have done + the multi thread function was priceless alone. I was selling each copy for $147.00 a license! that beats the $12 commissions I was making on promoting others.

The first week, I have totaled in over $1,300 in sales from my own software. The following week I did DOUBLE that when my affiliates started promoting it. Soon enough, this software program that costed me $700 to develop was making me nearly $10,000 a month.

This is when I got into internet marketing bigger then ever. I started investing in other softwares, especially in the myspace niche.

I started to get offer to sell my Myspace software business online, my highest offer was $115,000 to some marketing firm. I declined their offer, as I was making a good average of around $10,000 a month and figured it would just keep increasing. 2 months down the road, everything started to go down hill. I should have taken the offer when I had it.

That is when I got the idea of setting up established web sites and then selling them for a higher portion. It was easy for me to just outsource every idea, send some traffic, and make sure the conversion rate was decent.

Don't get me wrong, I still owned my own products, but did allot of web site flipping on the side. I was able to invest a little under $500 into a web site and sell it for $12,000 a few weeks later.

To keep a long story short, 6 years down the road, I still do product creation, web site flipping, and affiliate marketing to this day. My income is 5 figures a month and still finding ways to increase this.

That is my story in brief on how I got started into online marketing.

I started at eHow.com, years ago. Long before they sold out to Demand Media.

When they ended the WCP we were offered 1,920 for the rights to our 370 articles, or we could take our articles and publish them somewhere else and get no money.

We took the money, spent 47 out of the almost 2k to buy The Best Spinner and never looked back.

I've come a very long way since I first started, but I'm still learning new things each day

I started in 1996 advertising on the AOL free ads board for
a MLM program. I got a few sign ups that way. You just had
to repost your classified ad every day because it scrolled
    off as time went by.

You also had to keep a clock close by because you paid by
time for online access. Those 'good' old days!

I started July 2010, 2 months after I graduated from college. Someone asked me if I'm willing to learn how to develop a site using Wordpress and that's it. After 3 weeks of training on website development through WP, SEO and internet marketing, he gave me my first client. Then after 6 months, he fired me 'coz he said that I no longer need him and that I'm ready to be independent.

And that was a blessing in disguise. Thanks to him. hahaha

Started buying domains in 98, was funny because I didn't have much faith, figured domains weren't going to be a big a deal, managed to get lucky with one, applied for the registered trademark and it went through, earned a few nice licence fees since, helped me buy some property which kept me offline for a while but over the last year have become interested in apps, list building and PPC. I started practicing Internet Marketing almost 3 years ago.

The first 5 months i have made ZERO dollars.

I was wondering and asked my self why?

    It was so simple.

    I never TOOK ACTION.

I was always like "I will do that and this and i will make tons of money and....."

When i actually understood i had to TAKE ACTION, i started making some money online.

My first money ever was 4$. I provided an article writing service at Fiverr. It wasn't much, just 4$.

It was something more than the 4$ earned. It was the REALIZATION that this "Internet Marketing thing" ACTUALLY WORKS!

The best advice i can give to anybody is this :

Get started right away.Nothing will change unless you do something about it.Set some goals, believe in your self and Take action.Commit to your goals and plans till you are successful.

I started in January 2011, so almost 2 years ago. I was 17. I started out with learning about AdSense and stuff.. Didn't work out for me though, I jumped on something different.

In July 2011 I experimented with Google Sniper. I created around 5 sites, 2 of them ranked high in google. I didn't get sales though, the niches were too small and not very "desperate". Also, I wasn't delivering enough value.

Then around February 2012 I stumbled upon the WSO forum. This changed a lot for me. I found so many great business models, but it was a trap... I kept buying WSO's, never dedicating myself to one business model! I spent around 1000 dollars....

And here I am today, dedicated to building my list and delivering value I am in no longer DESPERATE to make money, and therefore I now have patience to build my business from the bottom up. i am 19, and my vision is to be working full time internet marketing by May 2013.

    It is definitely possible

Let's hear on how YOU got your start in online marketing. I will be posting mine in a reply to this thread. But, this would help some newbies get on track + be interested to hear all the stories.
    here's my story:

    I thought this worth sharing...

I started making money online on 2003 and created my first SEO blog via blogspot.com. The blog was earning around $120 a month for 2 years before I decided to migrate the content to wordpress platform with a new domain. The earning increased and after a year with more than 200 blog posts, I sold the blog for $4K+ via sitepoint marketplace.

2005 - I created 2 authority sites. 1 promoting Commission Junction products and the other was dedicated to promoting tripadvisor affiliate. Both sites were doing good. The CJ site was doing pretty well earning around $700/month when I got problem locally. I was having difficulty cashing out CJ checks. I sold the site for more than $6K.

Laziness and procrastination hit me and the tripadvisor site was left unupdated for several months. The sales hit the rock bottom. I sold the site for less than $3K via flippa. I stopped maintaining sites for a year and offered niche blog creation service.

I was employed since then until 2009. I had no plan to get employed again so I started from scratch again. I created a clickbank authority site and post an average of 3 product reviews a day (until now). My time is not enough writing articles for my own use so I hired 1 writer. He is so fast with high quality so I offered writing service and hired 10+ more while maintaining my CB affiliate site at 3 review articles a day.

After almost 3 years, my CB site become huge and is now promoting most of the products with above average gravity while having dozens of pages holding significant positions in Google pages. The earning is enough to support 4 college students locally.

Sometimes I thought, If I maintained those previous authority sites (CJ and tripadvisor), I can't imagine how much money I am earning right now. Ahh, not to mention that CPA site I sold also through flippa... the site was averaging $50/day though email and zip submit..

    Future plans:
Create a couple of more authority sites for other affiliate programs (not adsense neither amazon).

Lots of people fail (like me before) because they can't maintain what they have started, and always tempted by new suggestions, ideas, systems, etc. A number of warriors I know who started 10 but finished nothing.

Sometime in early 2003, someone asked me to moderate his 1-month old webmaster forum. I was a newbie then and interested in doing everything inside my capacity and time. After a year, I left her forum and dedicated my time on my own activities. Today, that forum has more than 250K members and the owner is just sitting pretty waiting for her monthly earnings from advertising sales.

I learned that the big hindrance to success is not the system but ourselves. Most system works but not most people work. A dedicated someone can make money without the need of expensive marketing materials (except promotional and seo software which is optional)...

I remember someone from another forum quit his college after a year of studying business management. His reason "I can't make more than $5K a month after 4 years in college, while I can make even more after 3 years of consistently doing IM".. And he is right. That kid is now the owner of a big moneymaking blog sitting on top 5 of Google for the keyword "money making online".... Although I am not saying it's bad to go to college, it depends on one's circumstances....

Well, it's taking longer so I think that's all for now....

    My final words:
Once you started something, analyze it thoroughly and don't stop. Don't start many things that you can't maintain (unless you have enough resources to outsource). Be consistent. Time pays sacrifice at the end so throw away that idea of "fast and easy way to make money online" because that's a myth. Work hard and see the result later.

Have a nice day to everyone

I think I started about 12 years ago looking at the make money online opportunities. I can't exactly remember when I first started making money but it was around the time the easy money for adsense was available with building portal sites ( The old warriors will know what I mean ). Man, I loved that Niche Portal Builder software !

I used to work full time and then up until 2am trying to learn how to ftp and buy a domain name !

Back in the day I could have made a small fortune if I knew what I was doing before the easy adsense money crashed. I used to learn from many sites including Netbreakthroughs and Keyword Avalanche.

Quit my job in 2005 and almost immediately my adsense earnings crashed but in the long term this was a good thing as I learned new skills which will now I hope help my sites recover from the latest Google updates. Note to self : Don't rely on Google.

I then moved on to using XsitePro and started promoting affiliate offers through CJ, Affiliate Window, Tradedoubler and a few other networks.

Over time also had some minor success with PPC, now starting to look back into that area along with other traffic sources.

    Still a lot to learn.....

I’ve spent quite a bit of time as an Internet Marketer in varying capacities over the last 15 years or so.

My Internet Marketing activities began when I jumped into eBay selling anything from stuff around the house to “how to make money” eBooks. I became a Platinum PowerSeller, moving $30K-$50K of merchandise per month, several years ago while selling computer components. Competition eventually heated up and the profits no longer justified the time invested so I left direct sales and began dabbling in affiliate marketing and AdSense. I’ve been doing it ever since.

My first significant income from affiliate marketing came from the eBay affiliate program when it was still with Commission Junction. Via some “greyhat-ish” methods, I was quickly earning upwards of $10K-$12k (net profit) per month via the eBay affiliate program. Unfortunately, they closed the loopholes I was exploiting a few months later so earnings dried up pretty quickly. During that time, I was also involved with AdWords and AdSense and I was making a few hundred dollars per month from it, which was nice.

I’ve been involved with AdSense publishing and Amazon Associates for the last several years. I've scaled up (and out) and I’ve been earning a significant online income ever since.

My business is in Mexico but I’ve been living in Canada since I was 15.
Since I was a kid I love entrepreneurship, I had my own store were I sold candies to my friends, then I hired them, and then I had to fire them since they wanted more money (when I was 5 I was an asshole).
When I was 15 I moved to Canada, I went to a public school in the middle of Alberta, really cold place. As one of the only Caucasian it was a lot of fun. Then I moved to Vancouver.
After highschool I went back to my home country for few months. I bought a coffee machine and started selling coffee in the streets next to a subway. I live in a rather large city and the subway was close to the hospital area. I was selling coffee to doctors and I notice they had an accent for different part of the country, and the only reason they were in my city was to buy their medical equipment/books.
I sold my coffee machine and I started asking around about where I could buy books/equipment at the cheapest rate. My family has been selling used books for over 5 generations (we have really cool middle age books, my grand ma has more than 300,000 books), so we knew who sold the books at the cheapest price, a nice shortcut.
I started selling on Ebay (or my region equivalent), so if someone bought a book I will forward the order to the bookstore who would shipped with shipping labels I gave them. It was fun but the 7% that ebay took was absurd (I was only making 5%). I decided to go independent.
I hired a programmer, he did the website for us for $500 (the basic one), good enough to start selling. Then I had to move back to start college, so started the most stressful time in my life.
I was taking 5 classes no summer off and managing a company in my home country. The guy who was supposed to do our website took 8 months. Then for 4 more months I only had products but I was not selling them I was only promoting them, I did not want to sell them yet (I did not even have the infrastructure).
In may 2009 there was a major crisis in my country. My plane got stuck there, the airport closed, so I had to satay there longer. There were not a lot of people in the streets so I decide to launch and start selling. In 1 month I sold $200, I was super exited, we have 1 order every few days and I would call everyone when that happened.
I was the webmaster/costumer support/manager/marketing guy at the same time. At the end of 2009 we started piking up, by then we have 4 orders a day on average, so I decided I needed help. I talk to my supplier and I gave them shares in exchange for help with costumers.
In 2010 we pass the million-dollar mark, and we've been growing really fast since then (margins are really low tough). So in paper I am a multimillionaire in reality I have a middle class wage/US wage (I have the rule of 7, I will never get pay 7 times more than the average employee, which is a rule I think every CEO should follow, and since my company is not in the USA I pay myself a low wage, so I have an incentive to rise my people's wages)
Right now for me is more about our goal and less about the money “give the Doctors from the third world access to knowledge and technology from the first world at a extremely good prices so they could improve the health care in their communities”, we plan to expand our model to most of the third world.
I really like what I do I would really recommend social entrepreneurship as a cure for unemployment.
Won’t say my name or any personal information mostly for security reasons PM if you want to know more. You can send me PM, I would love to respond to those.

I started about 6 months ago, 18 Years old ATM.
Created my first website in niche marketing..and it was a COMPLETE fail! haha

Moved on to affiliate marketing and building a list, and i've been on my way since. Started generating some affiliate commissions from my list and earned my first small clickbank check.

I figure, now i just need to scale what i did on another level. My list was at like 500 and i destroyed them with affiliate offers..it died down my list to like 250. Then i started building again and did it the right way this time.

Adding REAL value to peoples lives simply showing them cool free stuff People hate it when you always pitch a sale. It's almost if you work hard enough not to pitch all the time. You'll find yourself making more money.

You can check out my blog in my sig below for more info. That's a little piece of my story.

I started a sports forum about 12 years ago. I didn't monetize it for years until I discovered the world of internet marketing. Soon thereafter, I took the newly acquired knowledge and applied it. I've made a decent dime and created about a dozen sites since.

I got started with a program called "Wealthy Affiliate" which concentrated very much on SEO. So I spent my first 6 months online learning SEO, writing articles, becoming an SEO expert and making very little money. I still maintain it's daft to put your eggs in the SEO basket and play Russian roulette with Google

One mistake I did make was spending way too much money on paid for products and not realizing there were great FREE alternatives.

These days I'm list building and getting good results with a hybrid strategy I've developed through the knowledge I've built here (for example), many other places also and through personal coaching I've invested in.

However, ultimately it comes down to determination to succeed an being too stupid to give up

Seriously though - there are no quick fixes in IM. One thing I heard somewhere that stuck in my mind is that you spend 7 years to qualify to be a doctor but if you spend a determined year or two learning your trade in IM, you can probably earn more than a doctor in any case.

The added bonus is that when you crack the code you can maintain your lifestyle spending a fraction of the time that a doctor would need to invest to maintain his! AKA the internet lifestyle.

It does exist - you just got to work out how to get there - hint - adding value is good

    Cheers

Before I was an adult I lived with my parents on a military housing base called Camp Lejeune. All of the houses were relatively small, and people were coming and going all of the time so I took a big ol' $300 check I got from working at Burger King and mowing lawns and hit up all of the yard sales I could and spent every single penny I had on "stuff" I thought I could resell for more. I'm pretty sure I talked down everyone. I took everything to a friends mom who sold random things on eBay and asked "Could you help me sell this?" I probably made a $100 profit that time but after a couple tries I had it down. Next thing I knew I was making $4,000 profit a month before I was 17 and making more than my parents. I was still working at Burger King and mowing lawns and wasn't focusing on my education very much and dropped out. Like most 18 years old with $40,000 in the bank, I got a big head and thought I knew it all so I when I moved out I thought I would be alright. Well, I wasn't so I started working jobs like KB Toys, Starbucks, and Six Flags and the money I had saved ran out. I still "held on" to eBay trying new ways to make money and most weren't successful as eBay was starting to change into what it is now.

I got invested heavily into a game called World of Warcraft and in the game, they had a really expansive economic system that today, people still underestimate. I was never interested in games (and I'm still not) and I felt like I only played it based on depression. When I decided to leave the game after realizing how it was consuming my life, I made $1200 from my character and the gold I acquired in the game. This perked my interest heavily so I started to figure out how to make a profit. At first I played the game normally but focused on collecting things that could be resold and then when I sat back one day I did the math and realized that if I wanted to make thousands each month, I couldn't just play as one character and do one thing. Next I started playing the ingame Auction House and started making money that way. After that I started leveling characters on other servers and built up income within the game and went to the Auction House. Before I knew it I was making thousands of gold a day across most of the servers. Selling it for real money became a challenge because I simply didn't have the time. I was stuck to the game for 18 hours a day challenging myself to see how much money I could make. I started working with a company called IGE ran by the kid who played the main star in the movie "First Kid" who brokered all of the trades. I paid for someone to start developing automation software to do ingame tasks and finally I hired people and started a Computer Gaming Center (LAN Center). This got me introduced to "cheap labor" in China who was really really receptive to "Gaming for money" and I opened up a small office of 20 computers and 40 people who helped me broker the transactions, run my programs, work with the auction house, level up customer accounts, etc. By 2007 the industry started dying off and I sold the gaming company to "Ruidong Company" in China for $60,000 USD (who now manufactures Biking clothing). I still had the LAN Gaming Center which I sold off to the landlord of the property I was renting from in Iowa. I was using eBay most of the time to do things like sell accounts and services and gold.

So, while in China I discovered a large retail eCommerce site that I lot of people in China were using to buy and sell and I began buying goods and reselling them in the U.S. and I've been doing that for probably 4 years. I've made my 7th digit doing this and making me an "expert" in the process by working with large companies who utilize eBay as a sales channel. When I first got started my sales weren't big because as you know, eBay is a "volume based" company now, and you've got to have big numbers to sustain yourself on eBay so I came to WarriorForum and was amazed at people who were selling eBooks and stuff to make a living so I thought I would try it. Eventually after a lot of money being reinvested and a lot of trial and error I was able to make enough money to hire people to take over a lot of the tasks I was slaving away at. I've also consulted with eBay several times and even been offered a job working with the company in China. Good thing I didn't take it as eBay China ceased operations like 6 months later.

I started online by playing a MMPOG (browser based space game,) and eventually the code to the game went open source, and I grabbed it and set it up on my own server. For 10 years I programmed it (and through it learned php, mysql, and ajax.)

Near the end I even had bronze, silver, gold, and platinum support levels, (netting me about $150 a month.) One thing about me is I am tenacious, but after 10 years I realized this was a slow way to make money, (too much competition,) and this game should only be a hobby.

I then went into affiliate marketing IM products, (until I one day had the idea to build my own IM product.) It was a grande project, but I am never one to back down from stress or scale, so I went after it.

2 years of programming later, here I am!

Loved reading the other starts into IM!
