Want to Create a Membership Site - Best Software?

Hello,

I'm wanting to create a paid membership site on my wordpress site ... been looking at WishList Member, and a little at Magic Members.

What is the best, most professional, most upgradeable, etc. one to go with?

Want something functional, impressive, reliable.

Thank you,

Todd

I use optimize press with the s2member plugin.

I like it, looks professional and easy to work with content, and also manage members.

Its highly reliable too, I never have problems.

    very affordable too.

Check out MembersGear from PayGear.com. Very powerful, very simple, and it's free (but don't think that free means featureless because it actually rocks)

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm not concerned about price, just want a kick butt member program.

Lots of features and able to handle lots of content such as videos (from Amazon S3), etc.

      Keep the replies coming!

      ^^ this ^^

It is free but only compatible with their payment gateway.

Which is actually very affordable compared to clickbank.

And you can run it on both wordpress or html sites.

PS: It will also depend on your membership model.

My advice is to try a free product to get started, then if it takes off, then you can always upgrade your system. If not, you haven't lost a few hundred dollars.

If price is not an issue, Membergate has all the features you could ever want. I've never used them but I've only heard good things. I use Amember because it's scaleable, has all the features I need, and it's relatively inexpensive.

I know it's been mentioned here a few times. DAP (Digital Access Pass) has been said to be an awesome program I have bought it several months ago(yet to launch) but have heard great reports about it and from what I have read, will do the trick.
Im not an affiliate for it, but have heard it rocks also.
I'll check out some of those mentioned above though

Wishlist Member works great. Its a pretty powerful system. The tutorials are very in-depth and you can configure it to pretty much do what you want.

If you want to test things out first, try S2Member.

If you want an awesome membership site plugin with great support, I suggest Digital Access Pass.

I also researched about the most recommended membership site plugin before, most of the answers were either Your Members or Digital Access Pass

I started with JVManager and graduated to Fantasos. I got into a spitting contest with the developer because I could not understand how the affiliate system worked. Probably because I am an old fogey with limited imagination, so after two years, I moved on. This system was very stable, and standalone, and did not require Wordpress.

Then, I used Wishlist. Worked fine for about a year, then I started having problems and support denied there was a problem, or maybe it was they claimed they could not reproduce the problem. Until I started pointing out in public places that there were multiple threads on their own support site that talked about the problem. They started working on it, and I believe fixed it. But, after six months and the loss of 80% of my subscribers, I left for Digital Access Pass. I think the problem with Wishlist is that it uses too much of the Wordpress engine and requires frequent updating.

DAP has proven to be stable, and well supported. It has been a pleasant experience. I hope it stays that way, but I've been using it for a year now, and so far, so good.

DAP has proven to be stable I think it is stable because it provides a wrapper type protect to Wordpress, with very little interaction. with the code.

Along the way, I tried Amember, S2Member, and a few others. All the rest were good, but DAP just "felt better," and again, the support has been fantastic. (I don't know how they keep it up.)

PM me if you have any specific questions or want an opinion that I can't express in here.

Thanks for all the input everyone, I really appreciate it.

I think something that makes me undecided still, is I can not find any screen shots of either Wishlist member or DAP. I see videos of the admin panel and how to set it up, but no screen shots of how the membership area looks to the user. What the members see.

I think this is really lacking with many of the membership site software, they talk features and such, but no screenshots of what the product looks like for members.

Anyone have or know where I can see actual screen shots of how it looks in action?

      Thanks!

The reason you can't find any screenshots of how the membership area looks to the membership user using Wishlist etc.. is because the membership plug-in does not affect the look of the site.

How the website looks is dependent on the Wordpress theme/design you choose. One membership site that uses Wishlist could look completely different to another membership site that uses the plug-in.

        Is this what you meant?

Thank you all for the replies.

I wanted to see screenshots, because isn't there some main templates and design of the membership part itself? I realize the theme makes a difference, but many membership programs I have seen have a select template layouts, like where the video goes, how the pages are laid out, etc.

      Maybe not ... lol

Looked at the Profit Themes, looks like a very nice template with lots of built-ins. It has membership with drip built in, yet talks about integrating with DAP and other membership plugins. Why would you use something else if it is already a membership site? Or is it just very basic and DAP and Wishlist add so much more?

I wonder if perhaps I should just start with something like the profits theme, start the membership there then upgrade if need be to DAP or something later? Thoughts?

Really appreciate everyone's help on narrowing it down. You all have been a BIG help!

I'm really leaning towards the DAP membership software system. I was also looking at iDev Affiliate for the affiliate system. DAP has an affiliate system built in.

How good is it? Does it replace going with iDev?

      Feedback.

I'm ready to launch a video tutorial membership Web site. What I don't have right now is the spare $97 for WishList Member, in which I'm going to go with in the next 4 to 6 weeks.

In the mean time, I have both a PayPal and ClickBank accounts, I want to be able to use either one for now, but can't seem to figure out what free plugins I can use with either one using WordPress?

When it is time for me to upgrade to WishList Member, and I have already got members from using a free plugin lets say, will those customers have to signup again to my member site if I make the switch to WishList Member?

Lastly, and this may not be applicable. With WishList can you use both ClickBank and PayPal at the same time? I have watched setup videos online, and it seems like you have to choose one or the other?

    Thank you

I had a similar site a while back and used Joomla with the AEC plugin. They're both free/ open source. The great thing about doing it this way (other than the price ) is there are other plugins you can use to enhance your site. For example: you can add a members only forum (Fireboard) or if you decide to sell your own products, there are shopping carts which accept coupons for members only discounts (there are lots) all fully integrated because they're on the same platform.

BTW, if you plan on selling the site in the future I recommend you don't use PayPal as a processor because all your members will have to subscribe again when the new owner takes over (as I discovered the hard way).

2checkout is probably best IMHO for this type of site. They take PayPal and you can find coupons on this site: http://www.retailmenot.com/view/2checkout.com to cover the $49 sign-up fee.

    Hi nairobi,

Approach your problem from a different direction, get a free e-commerce solution (Delavo - The Free Core Version) which will automatically add your users to WordPress, use a simple membership outside of WordPress to deliver the content contolled by Delavo and at a future date you can use WishList.

Users will not have to sign up again.

You can use both Paypal & Clickbank at the same time with Delavo.

    Hi nairobi,

I am refering to a folder that would be controlled by Delavo, Local Membership or Remote Memebership which is controlled by .htaccess (a file of usernames and passwords) - at a later date this can be changed to a DELMem or Wishlist membership which is controlled through WordPress.

S2Member is fully functional at the free level. You only pay if you want to use the "added features." It is good and stable, and has great support. It is second only to DAP for my purposes.

I bought and tried YourMember sometime ago, and left because it was very "technical" in its setup and operation. I've been getting notices about the update, and I think they even offered a free upgrade. But by that time, my sites were vested with DAP so I have not bothered to re-evaluate.

I got very frustrated with Delavo's developer, so I personally wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. While it was stable, you can achieve the same protection with aMember, and the same results with a little ingenuity.
