Newly Launched Coupon Site. Best Way To Promote?

Hello everyone,

Yea I just got a little coupon site up and running. I planned to run ppc traffic to it and target product specific keywords. I wanted to know is this a good idea or would I lose customers because they have to copy the coupons then search for the product. Isn't that how retailmenot works? I think if I bid on the store coupons like target or walmart coupons that will be too competitive. How would you guys/ gals promote a site like this? Target product specific keywords, bid on the store name + coupons/deals or another method?

Ok That wan not a problem you can push the keyword as LTK (Long Tailed Keyword )
for an eg. if your chosen keyword is 'Weight loss ' and the keyword has too much competiton and you can choose 'Fast Action Weight Loss' as your keyword and do some off-page SEO for the keyword 'Weight loss' and you can rank easly

New site don't work with PPC (not like before days) or you'll lose your wallet. Get it optimized and do social networking. Those big coupon companies had big investors to keep them alive and unless you can get them on your side there's no hope in running with the big dogs. If your coupon site targets local community then you have a better chance of not needing investors.

then you're talking being an affiliate which is much different then doing your own coupon company.

Listen to Fluff she's know the market better than I do.

But from what I see I think the coupon business is way to powerful for a one man show. You need funds and a staff.

If you're doing just affiliate marketing in the coupon niche then good luck because unless you have a strong online presence with hundreds if not thousands of member attached then its better to find another niche to make money from.

      • I'm not even going to be subtle about this, since I've written articles on couponing and given talks.

Do you understand *how* coupon seekers use coupon sites?

It goes something like this: Susie finds something she wants to buy on BigBoxMerchant.com. She starts to check out and then sees the box where you enter a coupon code. Oh, no! She can't be an idiot and buy something full-price, so she opens another window and types "BigBoxMerchant coupons" in the search box.

If your site isn't one of the first three or four on the results page, you're toast.

SEO. You're going to need heaping truckloads of SEO. Coupon sites are big business and the major players are well-funded.

  • Ok wow. Just read through the thread replies. SEO is not the way to go. Lemme ask you something. Seo has one purpose o getting ranked on Google (mostly that's where your traffic is going to be coming from).

If anyone has noticed the recent trend of Google 'hating' on coupon sites recently it's because Google has Google coupons now since groupon didn't sell to them.

It wouldn't make sense for google to rank your coupons page over theirs would it?

    You need media buying.

    Just like groupon did

      • If you don't like SEO as an answer, what kind of answer were you expecting?

The coupon space is already pretty full with sites going cha-ching on affiliate commissions. Some rebate part of that commission (Mr Rebates is one example), so that's been done already.

But if you can come up with an original and novel take on couponing, you could make it work. (With all the requisite elbow-grease and 18 hour work days required to make any site work, of course.)

Why did you create a web site if you don't know how to market it?

SEO is your biggest answer. I never even heard about google coupons. Every time I need a coupon for hosting / domain or whatever it is, I type in "Coupons for CompanyName" and usually top 5 web sites get my pick. Never even seen google pop up in those results.
Facebook Ads are also your option. When you create an ad make sure you target the right people. For example, if you have a coupon for Web Hosting target people that have web hosting as one of their interests.

Honestly, you should of done your research before jumping into something.

This is what I suggest doing:
Pick 20 companies that get decent amount of monthly searches for keyword "companyname coupons" , then post coupons on your web site. After you do that start SEO one by one until you start ranking on the first page for "companyname coupons"

Or you can focus on specific coupons, for example web hosting coupons and optimize your page / category for that keyword.

    SEO is your answer.

It is clear that SEO is the answer but you have to be careful of what keywords to target. Don't go ahead and waste your SEO resources in trying to get first page using keyword : coupons as this will be waste of time simply with the high competition, you will be wasting months and months for nothing.

I would suggest to start targeting they keywords that your website have. let us say you have coupon for walmart for getting sneakers for $0.50 dollar. start target keywords like: walmart coupons , or walmart printable coupon, sneakers coupon, sneakers printable coupon. on this inner page.

You have a better shot as everyone try to hit the main page.

Here is my way of marketing for a coupon site:

    1. Local Directories and Yellow Pages
    2. Contacting Blog Owner to Review you Site
    3. Contacting Local Store to submit their coupon
    4. Distribute SEO Articles about your website

    5. Set-Up website Blog
    6. Search Engine Optimization on Local Keywords
    7. Set Up Twitter profile and gather targeted follower and tweets regular
    8. Set Up facebook fan page and gather targeted fan for your business
