I am taking my forum down

I want to take down my forum completely and put it back up in at a later date. Does anyone know how to do this. Can I just put it in a folder on my hard drive?

Just backup the database.so you can import whenever needed.

Also copy the folder,If you had done any tweaks to the themes.

You can ask your host provider if they will back the data up and send you a copy, if your unsure how to do this yourself that is.

There are two parts to the forum. The files and the database. Export the database and save it in your forum folder on your hard drive. Then in cpanel hosting, go to file manager and go to your forum folder. Choose Select All and then Choose Compress and then choose zip and give it a name and compress all the files into a zip file.

Then to restore, upload the zip file to your forum folder and choose the zip file in file manager and choose extract. Then recreate the database with the same database info as the previous one and import your database into it.

Can't you just lock it temporarily to prevent new posts and new members? That way, you don't lose any backlinks you might have to the forums.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

This is the best advice. Just lock it up and forget about it until you want to reopen it.

It has been locked for some time now. I have 345 members(spam) waiting to enter. y problem is that my forum is in my root folder and I need it for another .com site. Right now it is in a directory folder. So I need the space.
I have decided to buy another hosting package just not sure what kind to get yet. But it will be with Godaddy since I am familiar with the set up.

Export MySQL (most likely you are using MySQL) database as SQL dump file (.sql) with your SQL manager (such as PHPMyAdmin).

This file will contain your members, posts, threads, structure and everything else - basically the content of your forum.

However, if you have a non standard forum theme, you want to back up that as well. Back up all your non standard plugins and themes using FTP manager (such as FileZilla).

When you want to restore everything, just install a fresh forum script copy, upload your SQL dump file and upload your custom files (if there are any).

If you find this too complicated, I suggest you get someone on Fiverr

What a pain in the neck these people are. And the drug peddlers who sell them the poxy software they use to do it.

It's what I'd do, for sure.

Suzanne nailed it. Also I am going to add to Alexas comment that the benefactors of the spamming need to be the ones getting a falcon punch to the pocketbook. Forget attacking the spammers, attack those that benefit from it.
