Sup dudes.

I have a bunch of domains on a shared host on hostgator (fml.)

The performance is starting to suck. (I'm actually getting e-mails from legit customers saying it's slow. FML).

Quick question: How hard is it to move a wordpress site to a better server? If I pay hostgator will they do it for me? What other hosting options do I have? Is it easy to transfer like 30 sites to a beefier server?

Any advice would be gold. (Yeah I know I could research, or ask hostgator, but hell, I'm asking you guys.)

Thanks fellas

Its really easy if they are all wordpress, grab a copy of backup buddy and that should do the trick. I have a Verio VPS and its just ok and I also have hostgator baby croc package so i have been in your shoes.

I forgot to mention i have near triple the amount you have on a shared host gator and things are running fine, do you run a tight 'plugin' ship or are your plugins all over the place. I had some trouble with bad plugins that were really hurting my shared account and once i nipped them things got back to normal.

Will look into this. I purchased some traffic today (like 500 unique hits all at the same time....... Bad move on my part; can shared hosting typically handle that? How many hits per minute can a baby croc host handle? ) and heard people complaining of latency. I will check it out. Big up for your help.

with hostgator it is very easy, and they will usually do it for you for free.

they use cpanel, and there is an easy way to copy cpanel sites and put them on another cpanel server.

and yes, if you have several sites, and decent traffic, a vps makes very good sense.

even the lower vps, because once your on a vps you wont have to move the site again to upgrade to the next level vps with high specs.

If you want to take my honest advice then your website would suck on a VPS. VPS is not a dedicated server and unless you go for a very high end VPS you will never have as much resources as you even get in a shared hosting. If you know and are going to optimize the VPS with Nginx etc. then only it would make sense. Otherwise with default Apache it would probably suck even better and at times die down. If you know to administer servers then go for a low end dedicated server instead.

please explain, i have worked in the hosting industry a long time, and i just dont see how you can come up with this.

vps is not a dedicated server, a vps is a shared server, but with much fewer people and more resources dedicated to each user.

i would love to hear your insight.

I am saying that for high traffic websites. If the website traffic is so high that it cannot sustain in a shared hosting then it would not easily sustain a low end VPS too. Do you really think that a starter VPS from any established company which provides 256-384MB would be able to handle a high traffic website without optimization. I was saying about low end VPS and high traffic websites. If he is going to spend $80 like others in the thread mentioned to get a high end VPS then I think it would make far more sense to purchase a dedicated server at that price. Hell. For $80, I know reputed companies which would even provide Xeon servers leave apart normal servers. And I personally own to dedis and loads of hosting accounts all over and am saying based on my experience. If he can optimize with Nginx, Varnish, APC etc. then it might be a different game altogether but for a default VPS it would probably die down much easier for a high traffic website compared to a shared hosting. Cloud Linux might again be different because it has dedicated resources in shared hosting too and so VPS might work out better there.

I switched to HostGator VPS about 2 to 3 months ago. They transferred all my sites within 36 hours. I was getting throttled on the old set up and now my pages load reasonably fast. So far I'm pleased and HG's support is great. But, the cost is WAY higher than before ... I now pay $79/mo. for hosting. It's worth it because there were days before when my sites wouldn't load at peak times. Haven't had a problem since switching to HG VPS.

Why not just link up with cloudflare (assuming hostgator is working with them). I use it for a couple of my sites and I swear by it.

Most VPS companies nowadays will migrate your sites to their VPS for free. The question is who's the reputable company.

Stick with Hostgator - they are an exceptional company. They will do the migration to a VPS for you. A VPS is a worthwhile upgrade.
