Using one domain for 2 clients

I have a potential client that the husband sells health insurance and his wife is an accountant.

They just purchased a new domain a few months ago for accounting but have a 10 year old aged one they have been using for the insurance side.

Question:

Would it be advisable to have both businesses on the same domain because of the age? Have a splash page for the main domain and give the visitor the chance to pick from Insurance or Accounting then a click would send them to one or the others "home page" Or just have one use the aged domain and the other the new one. I think they may want to cut down on website building costs as well.

Just trying to figure out if Google would penalize...and the best way to approach this.

If you use a splash page is any form you invite trouble.

Build out 2 web sites. That one domain is old: that is great (and it is actually really helpful for an insurance related site) but just take it as a bonus.

I would go for two separate sites and just cross reference them. I'm assuming that both will be using different business names with a keyword relevant domain name.

If they want to save money on web building costs then they could both use the same basic design. Once you have the design done it will take little extra time to upload it to two domains - you'll just need to swap out the logos and/or header graphic.

Just a personal thing here - but I always feel that it's easier to seo a site that is optimised for just a few keywords - which is what you will be able to do if both have separate domains.
