Hi, I want to create my first IM product, not too sure if it will be a report/audio/video or all of the above, my question is what product did you first start out with, and if you were me, what product would you do now?.

ebook + audio (not really required)

    video upsell.

or you should just start with an ebook too get a good feel for marketing your own products, to me its a hell of a lot rewarding and easier than selling affiliate products

Mine was an ebook... but I didn't know any better then...

The best way is to see what the market wants and give them what they want... and also see what sort of competition you have.

Like say if you see 5 ebooks on playing guitar upside down and see their is a huge market for it, and there were no video courses, then consider doing video... survey the market first.

Hmm.... depends on your goals... if you want to build a list then you can use that product as a way to build it and give it away to people who get on your list. However you can also build a list through it as a paid product.

First product huh? Mine was an ebook back in 2002 and it sold over
$100,000 between me and resellers. That was not a bad start at
all. That book paid my rent for a few years and the sales letter did
over 15% conversion from general traffic.

    Those good old days.

Why not setup a small sales page, create a powerful report like, "39 Secrets to XYZ" and sell if for $19.95...but be sure to get them to opt-in. Then you can load up your autoresponder with, say, 30+ messages to go out over the next 3-4 months, and give them content mixed with related affiliate products related to your report. This way, your $19.95 may actually turn into much more profit as the weeks go by. All you need to do is then focus on driving traffic to your page. Selling a report for $19.95 should be easy too if you do it correctly, it's not rocket science.

THEN...if sales go well, ASK your opt-in subscribers WHAT they want to know more about...THEN create a full blown ebook for something like $37-$57 and sell it to them. They will buy it because it will fill the need they said needs to be filled. ;-)

Thanks!. How many pages is good for a $19.99 report?, I was thinking of around 30ish.

30 pages should do it, just make the content solid if you do.

Don't forget to put a few affiliate links DIRECTLY WITHIN THE CONTENT of the report as well. Don't push a product, recommend it within the report content and tell them why. Keep it simple and to the point.

    Best of luck!

I think software and scripts that solve problems and meet unmet needs are the fastest way to break in and establish credibility... today with all the systems you can build plugins and apps for that's a great idea to look at as well.

Information is still a viable option but I think its easier to come up with an idea and hire a programmer to help you develop a mechanical solution than it is to write great content so if you struggle with content give software a try.

I firmly believe that price does not depend on the size of the ebook, but the quality. If you have a 100 page guide full of crap, then it's not worth a cent. But if you have a golden 10 page report, people would pay a lot for it. So the price depends on how valuable you think your info is.

As for the format of your product, reports and ebooks are of course a nice way to start off. However, if you have a list or group of people you could survey, perhaps it would be best if you set up a survey using SurveyMonkey or a similar service and ask those people what they want and how they want it.

    Good luck,

Don't have one yet, unfortunately :/ I plan on creating a few short reports within a couple months, but right now I'm focusing on an affiliate promotion I'm doing. No room for product creation yet. Perhaps I'll create a product case-studying my affiliate promotion now if I'm successful.

"How I made $XXXX.00 in 72 hours Using Affiliate Marketing!" or something like that

          Great Post
Back in 1989 we had a thing called usenet and the BB's (Bulletin Boards) this was years before the browser and I sold royalty free video and audio tracks to producers using these tools. They were very similar to things called social media now (Social Media isn't new) Than IRC came around and Sales skyrocketed. There were hundreds of IRC Groups in every sort of niche one could imagine. If I would be starting out now I would try my hands at all the variety of product media ebooks, video ebooks, video, audio whatever, you'll expand your knowledge and your buyer base. Hope this helps.

I feel it can be based on your strength.

If you can write well, write an ebook.
If you can speak well, you can do an audio or video product.

Do something which you feel comfortable with.

As for the topic, create something which you know
and have lots of content to share.

It can get your momentum going.

Build a list and you can always prepare for the
    next product.

    Cheers,
    John
