How to capture attention of "big dogs" in your market?

How do you get the attention of the players in your market with huge lists? I genuinely want to partner with them long-term so they can make me successful and I can make them successful, but don't know the right way to approach them.

My current approach is basically:
"Hey, I love the work you are doing and want to promote you. What do you need help with? I'd be glad to help you or refer you to someone who can."

My reasoning is that I'm offering THEM value upfront, instead of asking for something. But, in my mind, this approach seems strange and "salesy".

What's the best way to get the attention of a "big dog" in your market?

Same way as you approach anyone else in the world; build a relationship first. Introduce yourself, get to know them. If they have a blog, post comments that add value to their posts and start a discussion. Buy their products, give them honest feedback about their products. Try promoting their products through their affiliate programs. If you can make them lots of money by promoting their products, then they will be much more likely to JV with you.

Try capturing the attention of someone smaller first. It's not always easy to get to the biggest peeps right away.
