Which domain name is better?

Hi,

Let's say I want to build a website to sell red widgets. "red widget" gets 49,500 searches and "red widgets" gets 2900. The only close domain names available are "redwidget.info" and "red-widgets.com". Which one should I choose and why?

Thanks!
#domain

I would always go for the longer one. That way you could use the shorter and longer phrase as anchor text and rank for both. Or you could just focus on the longer phrase and you might find that you will start ranking for the shorter one anyway after some time. Get red widgets to #1 and you'll have a massive headstart with red widget.

Neither of the domains are ideal.. I hate .info domains as they take a bit longer to get indexed by the search engines..

But you're going for search volume, so the .info would be the way to go, unless rewidget.co is available, if it is that's what i'd register.

    Hi alive,

For that amount of searches for "red widget" there must some serious competition.

I would get both and work on both at the same time and see what works better as i like to test a lot even if it's a lot of work.

If you have to choose and you know your competition and you know that you can handle your competitors then go for redwidget.info.

An exact match domain is not necessary to rank well for your chosen keywords you know, onpage and offpage seo is.

    Best of luck,

Both have same weightage but going with .com is very good where as nothing be degraded with having - in the domain. While _ will be degrades the domain. As far as I'm concern from my experience of 4 years in IM.

Without a doubt get the .com.

      .info doesnt rank well.

Dont buy both and build two sites...

You can outrank anyone in time - but you cant stop and then get sidetracked. It will just be another 'failure'.

My advice is pick a niche you know converts then hit it hard, and dont get sidtracked... You will get there eventually.

      Good luck,

        Good luck,

I totally disagree for this reason:

If you bought both URLS's, set up two sites and spun the content for the sites so that it was still the same but still 'unique' you could split test the results, create a very useful WSO and sell it in droves.

You sir do not know what your talking about and thus your post is misinforming the original poster.

Maybe .info don't rank well in YOUR experience but there are plenty of .info's that well out rank .com and in some of the most competitive niches there are.

To the OP, it doesn't matter what domain extension you get, what matters is what the quality of the content is that you put on the domain.

Go with a dot com domain and try as best as you can to keep the keywords together. There will be a difference in opinion on this one, but for me I have always found this approach to be more effective. If redwidget.com is not available, try redwidgetreviews.com or redwidgetreview.com or something along those lines. Also consider going for a .NET if the .COM options aren't available. Dot Info is said to work fairly ok (according to some), but let that be your last resort.

    Hope this helps.

prowebster brought up the important point that nobody is talking about...

    Have you checked competition?

If a KW is getting almost 50k searches month (provided they are exact match, not broad match), then chances are the competition is pretty stiff. If that's the case, then your domain name is only the first of the issues you need to think about.

Check out what the competing sites on the first page of google are and if they look beatable.

Then check the competition for both the singular and plural versions of your KW to see what the carryover is between the two.

As far as domains go, EMD + .com, .net, or .org is of course the most recommended. But if you can't find one of those, then it's not the end of the world. Personally, I'd just add a stop letter (e.g. - redwidgetv.com). Some people like hyphenated domains, but I've not seen them do overly well. YMMV.

And I've seen enough .info domains rank well that the whole ".info domains suck" argument doesn't fly w/me. I'd still use a stop letter .com before I would .info, but that's just me. A .info isn't as bad as many who read too many forums like to say.

Hi Alive, I suggest you check the competitions on both of the keywords first, then decide which ever has the lowest competition then go for that domain. I also suggest that you use .com domains if possible.

After reading comments here, and my expertless in IM, .info can beat .com sometimes.
I agree with how well u tune ur site to crank up.
but .info associated to cheap domain where many domain seller gives more discounts price for .info

I'd choose the dot com. More credibility & trust.

      Just my 2 cents....
