How would YOU market this?

Hey guys,

If you allow me, I'd like to pick your brains... Because I've already burst mine on this but the results where NOWHERE near what I would have wished for.
So, here's the story: I've recently launched a brand of t-shirts which is geared towards young people (15-25 years old) who dream about being a badboy, and each t-shirt depicts one type of badass "doing his thing" (like the Street Fighter, the Arms Dealer,...)
Now, I've set up my website (e-commerce) and Fanpage (for which I "gained" Likes thru ads)... but I'm not getting any sales!
I've tried different things (special offers, facebook ads, free s&h...). Nothing seems to work, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, for the life of me!

So, if you were to market this, how would YOU go about it? What would YOU do to get people interested and buying?

Shoot your ideas!

    LOL I love it

Really attractive website, combined with the strangest line of clothing I have ever heard of.

Establish your target market and pinpoint a way to reach them:

I'd try to get a few contacts in retail to get these into video game stores, goth shops, druggie stores (you know they type, they sell bongs).

I'd pay for advertising on gaming forums, horror forums or any other community related to your niche.

Then I'd make a zombie killer T-shirt, cus everybody loves killing zombies...

I wish you the best of luck with this

Hey highrank, I like your idea about advertising on some gaming forums... I'll have to ask around as to how much it costs.

Anyway, thanks for your answer... and also for your last words!

Have you tried cafepress, they have a good market for T-Shirts.You can open your own store, you can check out if you can integrate your site in there.Another possible way is to begin a contest for interesting caption on facebook and award the best caption with a T-Shirt,possibly with that caption.

    • You didn't say what your marketing budget is. I think you could blow through a lot of money with banner ads.

      Have you tried PPC?

Yes, I've been down the contest road already... All people had to do to enter was to give their email address. But, after a whole month, all I got was a cool 2 entries! Nice, wasn't it?
Do you think that by involving people (like having them caption pics), they would be more prone to participate?
I think the real problem I'm having is that people are NOT INVOLVED with my brand. No matter what I do - asking questions on FB, posting up quizzes, putting up fun content like videos or quotes - I don't get much back. No "likes", no comments, no sales.

To fLufF: no I haven't tried PPC yet... Is it any good? The only experience I have is with the CPM model on FB

To social saint: buying ad space would be nice... Unfortunately, I don't think it's within the limits of my budget On the other hand, I might try sponsoring. Yea, that could definitely work.

I think making the people in designing making the T-shirt and having it as a gift is something that spurns the youngsters engaged. If your facebook page is new, then it takes sometime for people to get used to it.You have to be patient and keep going on with the postings and contests.Wondering if u have presented the entries you have received for the last contest. If not please do,with a mark of your website on the sleeve or someother place of the T-shirt.

Make it fun and engaging and even if its one entry send that guy/girl the gift.It helps with mouth publicity as well.

That's a really nice site that you got there. I am not sure why Facebook Ads and Fan page didn't work for you. Usually these kinda stuffs go well with Facebook than Adwords. What you can do next is to buy ad spaces - Buysellads.com is a good place to start if you are not sure where to look for advertisers. Try to work out a deal with the local cafe, retail shops etc. where kids and teens usually hang out.

If nothing works, find some up coming contests on good websites and tell them you are willing to sponsor a few tshirts as prize. That should give you some free marketing and platform to get started. I wish you success!

I applaud you for NOT cutting any corners while building your website. It looks awesome! Great niche, khm, from the marketing point of view, you know, looks like those people really like to show off ...

In my opinion, many websites are governed by INERTIA LAW:
    - in the beginning, you have to push the hardest, fighting the inertia to gain at least some minimal traction / movement / traffic. This includes throwing money on advertising, SEO efforts, press releases, etc etc
    - as your site gets some traction, it becomes easier to push it forward, b/c chances are people will start recommending it online / link to it / search engine positions improving, which in turn makes more people see it / link to it / recommend it and so on
    - finally, it could reach the point when it has gained steam and now inertia is the force actually keeps your site going, with little maintenance efforts from you

Only good sites are being HELPED by inertia law. Bad sites just fall down as soon as you stop pushing it.

I wanted to say that in my opinion, your site is a good one. So keep on pushing it, and I think you have a good chance to make it

    Cheers,

Yes, I think you put the finger on the problem. INERTIA! That's exactly it! As, for now, it seems like it won't and will never ever move
But, as you say, I know that once the ball will be rolling, it'll only get easier and easier.
So, I guess that all I gotta do for now is get the damn ball moving, if only inch by inch!
Anyways, thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate!

I'm not getting much traffic... It mainly comes from people clicking on a link on my Facebook page.
As Arranwood points out, SEO is very poor. And I'm the first to admit it.
Maybe that could be the first thing I should work on. I've focused all my energy in getting my Facebook page known, and perhaps not enough getting traffic to my shop.

That's also what I'm starting to think. Maybe people need to touch/feel them first. Be presented with the physical product and not just pictures of it.

As cool gifts apart from the drug trafficker and arms dealer ones which are not cool things to wear in my opinion. I would go for a Chaos one

If your budget allows it I would get some printed with the domain and or your Facebook page underneath the images and hand some out to your young friends or family to wear. Go to clubs and offer some free for the DJs to hand out as prizes, include some business cards to put on tables or in the loos.

Find some sites that attract a lot of young people and offer some to the site owners as prizes for their visitors. They might even put a link to your site.

Get a market stall and see how many you can sell, should give you good feedback too. Put some on eBay.

Lots of things you can do to build your brand and if they look good on the wearers then their friends will want to buy too.

In my opinion those t-shirts would do well in the real world not necessarily online for first run.

Market traders will take a few off you as trials; if they sell they will buy them buy the van load (I know I have done this with many products). I could put you in contact with a few of them that operate over several popular markets if that helps?

Make sure your web address is on ALL of the t-shirts because as mentioned many times above, the site is great (not from the engines eyes as SEO is very poor).

Gothic, rock and that style of retailers may also be interested but they are more likely to send the t-shirts to their current printers for duplication than offer a steady purchase flow from you.

Anyway if I can be of help just message me.

    Best regards

    WittyT,

Did you know you can now go viral with FB pages?

I wont mention link/product as I am actively promoting it (PM for details) I am a distributor for this. This has full-integration into Facebook where others don't!!

What you can do is create a custom fanpage within minutes. The fanpage can be fully interactive, you can add videos very easily, add links and even custom graphics within minutes.

Once you have a visitor to your page they click an acceptance link to access the page for the first time. This takes the thing viral.

    1. It then emails you letting you know someone is currently on your fanpage. You can then go and interact with them on FB if you wish.

    2. They get a custom personal email from you in which you can add your website links (or whatever else you want). This email goes to whatever email account they have attached to FB.

    3. They also have a post placed on their wall telling all of their friends that they visited your page. If one then follows this link, then all of the above repeats the process.

There are other more advanced tools that can be used within the IM world like webinars, linking externally to other social sites like twitter, linkedin and others, Video email, video conferencing, video broadcasting

**EDIT - Just noticed you can't send PMs. to see my FB page like this: here

Really nice looking site you have there.
I'm wondering whether some kind of offline promotion might be better.

A newspaper article would be an option. You'd probably need to create some kind of controversy around your site, that would divide opinion.
Newspapers love jumping onto anything they deem may be controversial.

Another option would be printing up some color flyers (the nice shiny type paper), giving them the exact look and feel of your site, and seeing if you can get them put in video game stores. There are plenty of such stores near me and all have the feel of your website. Also, cinemas and movie rental stores might be an option.

In any event, all the best with your website mate.

Never been into marketing with tshirts but the first thing crossing my mind is going local, you know your place, you know where these "wannabe's" hang out, not hard to find.

Print 10-20 tshirts, with your URL address on them attached, see those guys that look a bit more "tough" like a wannabe and ask them if they would like a free shirt BUT, they'd have to tell to their friends where they got it, or bookmark your website etc (whatever you find more suitable as marketing).

The second thing I would do is (even tho these guys are wannabe's - but as someone mentioned, they won't spend 30 euros for a tshirt THAT often, with 30 euros coctails and other type of fun is what they will think when spending money) drop the price (to a reasonable amount with 0 or small profit) to get it started, once it gets viral it will become good.

I am a bit above that age, so perhaps it is just me, but I would NOT buy a "I am a Dealer/Streetfighter/Gang leader" t-shirt - but I would not mind buying the exact same t-shirt without the "I am" - a more generic type of t-shirt, example: "don't mess with a" {gang leader|street fighter|drug trafficker} etc... The "i am" sounds so 13-15ish of age.

    Just my 2 cents.

You website is cool and very well done! but all the other marketers who have commented need to really have a good look at what your proposition is. Just read the intro here:

      http://www.evilpeople-wear.com/specials.php

It made me feel bad. Only a very small percentage of disaffected young people would want to identify with "Evil" and wear it with pride. Now there is a good market for "gangsta chic" but you have not captured it.

Just as an example for you: when the Lord of the Rings came out, a large jewellery company went out and made loads of those "rings of power" - now you might imagine they made loads of sales - nope - they made thousands and sold next to nothing. Why - because people don't want to identify themselves with evil, let alone put it on public display.

Go back to the drawing board and do some real research with your target market and find out what they really want because as it is you won't make any money.

IF YOU WANT TO SELL YOU HAVE TO MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY!

I beg to differ. If that was the case, Scarface, Grand Theft Auto, etc. would have been nothing but failures. On the contrary, they're part of the biggest hits ever (be it for movies or games). Why is that? Because most guys, young or not so , want to be badasses. Darth Vador, anyone?
But you are entitled to your own opinion. This type of product, as someone outlined a little bit earlier, is made to create some controversy.
I don't mind people not liking my t-shirts. No, let me rephrase this: I WANT some people to HATE my t-shirts. It'll only help me in the long run

What people want is NOT to feel happy. They want to feel EMOTIONS, whatever they are! (sadness, fear, joy, excitement, lust, ...)
