Stuck with 18 articles. What should I do?

Hi guys,

I have a problem. I work on oDesk as an article writer and I have just fell victim to a fraudster. He tricked me (along with several other contractors) to work for him and he didn't pay any of us.

I wrote 18 gaming-related articles for him before one of the other contractors let me know that the guy is a fraud. That's 3 days of work

Fortunately, I was able to take the articles down from his WP site and Google de-indexed them. I put them on my free WP site (they are now indexed).

My question is: can I make any use of them?

Thanks for your help!

A similar thing happened to me some time ago (the impetus for establishing my upfront payment rule!). I looked for an affiliate product that matched the articles and published them to one of my sites with the affiliate link. As you have now published them on your own site, you can't really try to sell them to anyone else.

This has happened to me a few times... you could offer them right here on WF as a WSO and make some money back. I normally sell these articles as PLR. This means that even if they keep trying to use the articles there will be plenty of other people that have them. I also sometimes offer them as free gifts to my list.

If you are sure they aren't being used anywhere online you could also sell them on constant content. Google it and you'll find it... you can post articles and how much you want for them and people will browse the site and buy them. 90% of the articles I post there sell.

That's too bad. That has happened to me on a much bigger scale (not through oDesk, however). It's really sad that people can't do business normally.

I think that Kerry made a great suggestion. Use them for yourself and find an affiliate product.

They have already been indexed twice by Google, so I (personally) would not feel right selling them as PLR. My first 'go-to' suggestion would be to use half of them on your own site and submit half of them to article directories, but I think that you might have trouble submitting articles on the topic of gambling. Not too sure, haven't had any clients in that niche.

I would suggest that you use it as a spring board for your own project. Use them as a seed for a new site. You have already done the research to write the initial content, so now you should pump out a good one or two articles a day and drip them into your site through WordPress. Do that for a month or two and you'll be on the road - flip the site and walk away with the money.

I hope that you can use them somehow, I know how you feel right now.

The articles remained in the Google cache for a while and I was worried he would try to copy and re-publish them. So I published them myself to make sure that he won't get to use them for SEO, as they would be duplicate content.

If I de-index them from my site, won't I be able to sell them? (Silly question?)

It doesn't matter how many times something has been in Google. If they're going to steal content, they're probably too dumb to care about the fact that it is duplicate.

In regards to de-indexing the site and selling the content - do what you feel is the best there. I personally would not sell anything that has already been indexed by Google. That's just me though. I don't think that I could sell it as completely original and that's what people usually want - original PLR that Google has never seen.

You might be able to explain the situation to your potential buyers, but that might get confusing and they might lose interest.

In a nutshell, this unfortunately happens to writers. It has happened to me a few times as I worked out how and when to charge writing clients. I think I always ended up using the content myself, posting to a new or existing site.

You might as well use this as a good reason to start requiring payment up front, or at least half payment up front. Don't think that it will scare your buyers away. If you have some testimonials, then most clients will be happy to pay your upfront. Just ask.

I know no way of "de-indexing" them. Once they have been indexed and date/time stamped by Googlebot, then any other occurrence of them would be considered dup content and be ignored.

I think that you're in the ballpark, but quite on the nail with that. I'm quite sure that Google doesn't simply ignore duplicate content. I have seen many instance of the same article being posted and indexed in many different places.

For instance, if you hang around here for a while and you see someone that is making dumb comments that only bear a slight relevance to the topic of a thread, you can usually copy a part of their post and search for it in quotes in Google. Many times, you will find that they are simply copying an article that has been posted in many places. If Google ignored dup content, you wouldn't be able to find it this way.

Dup content definitely gets indexed. I've seen it many times.

But, as I understand, G puts much more credit to a page on which it finds content posted for the first time.

This is a load of BS. Google does not ignore duplicate content from different domains.

Otherwise, Copyscape would not be necessary to find all instances of duplicate content in Google's index.

        This is completely wrong.

You've misunderstood what "duplicate content" means.

It's well and clearly explained here, if that helps.

I have Alexa's avatar on my desktop and my "dream girl website".

Does that mean that her picture has no value here? After all, it is dupe content, right?

Although I have always wondered if Alexa Smith is not an artificial name... Surely there can be no Intelligent, attractive, well spoken, successful female IMer in real life, and such things only exist in comic books and on the Internet?

I am sorry for that. I would say try to take advantage of them posting in different article directory and refer them to your website.

This way you get backlinks and everytime someone ask you for a work sample you can provide them some.

One thing I am going to point out about duplicate content...

Many people seem to think duplicate content is the same articles on two domains. There is no penalty for that, the penalty is for having the same article on the SAME domain multiple times.

It is thought that the first person to have the article indexed on their site will get the most benefit, but there is no penalty for using the same article on multiple domains.

Also, when it comes to buying PLR, people buy it knowing that it is extremely likely many people have already purchased and used it.

      This ^^^^. Exactly.

I would repackage your articles as PLR, Bogdan, and sell limited but multiple copies of the set of 18 articles for a reasonable price (maybe $15 or even a little less?). Fortunately they're in a very popular niche.

What's more important, in my opinion, is never to write for new clients without payment in full, in advance. I never did, and it was never a problem: whenever anyone buys anything on the internet, they pay in advance (even if not quite always in full, though that's normal, too, for low-ish-cost items) - why should a set of articles be any different?

Good luck with them - and well done with what you've done so far, in these circumstances!

Actually, I've been preaching the same thing on my own blog - how not to get scammed on oDesk, but I didn't bother to follow my own advice This will serve me as a lesson.

    - use them as references to people that want to hire you for writing, (demo or samples)

So sorry to that this happened to you. It has happened to me too...one of the hazards of being a freelancer so I know quite how you are feeling. There have been several really good suggestions here. If you had not posted them on your blog you would have been able to sell them. But as it is, you still have a lot of options open to you.

    Best of luck

If you have your own blog why not use them to guest post and promote your blog?

Alternatively you could always try and get in touch with a internet marketing company who have a team of writers creating content all the time, they might buy them off you if you're really lucky
