A Suggestion for doing Research on Google

I'm often surprised how much dated material comes up when I do Google searches. I would think that one way the search engines would categorize content is by date. Nowadays information on many topics is outdated within months, at most. It's not unusual to find material from several years ago -sometimes they even dig up content from 5 or even 10 years ago!

So if you're doing research for any kind of project, it's a good idea to click on "advanced search" and then "Date, usage rights, region and more," where you can specify the date range. Depending on how current you want the material, you can use 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, etc. But at least you won't be getting news articles from 1996!

I realize this isn't a revolutionary tactic, but it can help if you don't want to sift through outdated content.

Do you use private browsing in google too. I noticed when I was looking at rankings in google and some of the page ranks weredifferent when I changed to private browsing

Yep, using this with the 'blogs' section of Google is a good tactic for keeping up to date with the latest relevant posts on blogs that don't have RSS feeds.

I sometimes do that, but for a different reason. That's good to do if you want to get an accurate idea of the rankings of your own site. Otherwise, Google will often put your site on Page 1, but it will say "shared by you" underneath, which means it may not be on Page 1 if anyone else does the search. The topic I brought up about dates was just for general research though.

Thanks for the tip LarryC, I never tried using the advanced search feature. Whenever looking for recent content I'd always just type 2011 after my keywords lol.

Actually, typing 2011 after your keywords can work well too. The dated search might be better though if you want really recent content, as in the last month or even week.
