Are You "The Dark Knight" of YouTube? If so...I'm sending out the Bat Signal!

I want my videos to get HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of views. How does that happen? What's the secret?

I have made a few hundred video in the past few years for a variety of reasons:

1. To promote my Radio Show
2. To promote myself
3. To promote my products
4. To build my list
5. To show everyone how cute my kids are.

I have some pretty decent success with some of my video, but I haven't been able to reach that SUPERSTAR status. How is it done? Some of my videos have received 40,000+ views...I want 10X that!

Here are some things I have learned from my successful videos:

1. MAKE THEM CONTROVERSIAL: I interviewed a guy named Blake Lewis who was on American Idol. In the middle of the interview he started "trash talking" one of the other contestants - "Sanjaya." I turned the audio into a slideshow and sent it to "Perez Hilton." He posted it on his blog and a received a ton of traffic.

2. PROMOTE THEM LIKE YOU WOULD A PRODUCT: I did a similar thing with my Miley Cyrus interview I turned my exclusive with Miley into a slideshow and sent the YouTube link to her fan clubs and Facebook groups, Miley Cyrus Blogs, posted on Mysapce. I also submitted it to every bookmarking site I could think of with Miley Cyrus related Keywords. I received 20,000 views. Nice bit of promotion for the show, but I wasn't selling anything so no cash was earned. Still, I crave way more views.

3. GET NAKED: This was my attempt at an "Evolution of Dance" style viral video. I used video of a "Charity Striptease" performance and tried to make it the "Most Watched." It's just shy of 20,000 views and it is already 2 years old. (If you really want to see what I look like in my underwear then you can click on my YouTUbe icon under my photo.

Now I am starting to branch out and use video marketing for products and promotional ideas. I want to use YouTube to drive the traffic to my sales pages. I have some funny yet informative video up that are like little comdedic "Informercials." Some have already eveen generated sales for me, but I need BLOCKBUSTER traffic.

My big question is, "How do I get them to be the MOST VIEWED?" How do I get the six-figure hits? How do I become "The Dark Knight of YouTube?"

Your advice is appreciated.

    It's so very simple Mark.

Here it is... are you ready?

Simply show a scantily clothed woman as your video thumbnail.

    That's it.

Guaranteed to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors, especially combined with your underwear controversy angle.

That's why dating offers can be so profitable on youtube. But I have also found by accident that the non dating videos I uploaded that show nearly naked women also did well. I just got one on page one for the youtube search term: "easy money" that gets decent hits now... That damn Rodney Dangerfield person beat me to number one.

Yikes, Mark, no offense, but that's how NOT to get visitors to your youtube videos

I have a winemaking video up for a good keyword in my niche and the thumbnail is a "scantily clad woman"

Only 16 views even though it shows up on page one of the search for the keyword!

    These 4 things...

    1. To promote my Radio Show
    2. To promote myself
    3. To promote my products
    4. To build my list

... are what is keeping you from getting lots of views like you want.

Every one of those listed above mention "MY".

People on YouTube instinctively reject 99% of videos that are promotional. Those are seldom the type of videos that go viral. You need the help of other people to share your videos, and if it's all about building you and your list, very few people care in the grand scheme of things.

And the "tittie" shots that Jared is recommending doesn't guarantee anything at all except showing evidence you have to use some breast shots instead of anything worthwhile.

      Jason, great points.

Take this forum for example... the posts that are in any way 'self-promotional' are barely viewed, if not zapped and deleted.

The interesting posts that contain great sharing of knowledge, or have great entertainment/intrigue value (such as watching someone create an online business from scratch) this is what goes viral.

Jason, I meant this as somewhat of a pun...(just in a silly mood tonight) did you see what Mark said in his OP?

Just trying to do my best to help improve Mark's CTR... seeing Mark in his underwear, ummm... no, I'll pass...

However, do a search on YT for the most viewed, and HotForWords, or AtheneWins comes up quite often don't they?

Duly noted...but there are people who use YouTube for these same purposes successfully aren't there? Is it possible to have a viral video that is also profitable?

This guy has just gone viral, launching his stand-up comedy career:

Learning how to Master video marketing is not easy and takes talent to accomplish the viral effect, as 'Jones Big ass truck rental' has done.

If you do some research on this guy, you will find out that he is actually a standup comedian and 'Big Dog Eat Child' (a sketch comedy group) is behind this marketing phenomenon:

"Wanna see the man behind Toby Jones in person? Want a sneak peek of the newest Jones' business venture before it hits the web? Big Dog Eat Child and Robert Hines will be performing at the Lakeshore Theater on New Year's Eve.

Robert will do his hilarious stand up, Big Dog Eat Child will perform our brand of sketch comedy for people with A.D.D. as wells as other great acts, and you can start off the new year by seeing the next, brand newest Jones' commercial. You Can't Beat That."

This 'commercial' is a strategically planned execution of comedy and marketing. It took PLANNING, it didn't just happen by chance.

And all the video clips aren't promotional?

It has more to do with what people perceive as promotional (understand "pushy").

Just don't force people. They don't like feeling obviously manipulated into doing something. Entertain them and let them push themselves towards you.

Mark, you asked a great question. I was intrigued by it. First of all, I'm a big ol' Noob, here. I don't claim to have produced the results you are seeking, so take what I say for what it is.

Not being the Dark Knight myself, but believing in the adage that success leaves clues and modeling works, I thought I'd truck over there to youtube to look at the most viewed videos of the week to see what they might have in common.

On the surface, the majority featured attractive women, a stunt-type theme, comedy, sports, big news stories, were shopping advice oriented or aimed at teens.

Looking deeper, though watching some of the videos, I did notice a few commonalities that I'll share here:

Clue #1-The most popular channels are by personalities with a clear, strong, obvious point of view. Their channel profiles are chock full of background and personality info. You get who they are after a few minutes. You know right away what they are about and whether or not you feel a resonance..or a tingle

Clue #2-Many of the folks with the most views came out and asked their viewers to respond via video or specifically asked viewers to make comments or to subscribe. So one clue seems to be to be upfront and encourage interaction by telling the viewer specifically what you want them to do (a call to inter-action).

Clue #3-Almost none of them were blatantly selling anything in their videos. (Although they might on their website).

Clue #4-Most of the successful video producers have channels that offer lots of other ways to learn more about them and interact with them easily and quickly; websites, twitter, blogs, etc. They have lots of clickable links in their channels and video description that draw us easily out of youtube and into their sites and their world. Once they get us on their turf, they have lots of ways to draw us deeper in and get our contact information. In other words, they are not counting on youtube or any one video to do the work.
Mark, I noticed for example, on your Nascar song video, which I thought was cool and fun, and got lots of views, you didn't have a clickable link in the description or in your channel profile that would make it easy for me to go and download it.
If you added the full url preface that begins with http to the beginning of your url instead of what you have now it would become a clickable link. (I can't put in the actual link because I don't have enough posts, sorry.)

If you moved your link into the first line of your description you might have a better chance of getting us to click it. As it is, it is buried in the last line of your description. A person would have to really be motivated to find it. I was, so I did. The video clips on your blog were great fun, but I didn't see a way to join your list.

Imagine if I were one of the 10,000 that saw your Nascar video, got over to your site to download it and opted in. Then, you could email me each time you had a new, fun video up and I'd probably go check it out. If you asked me to pass it on and it was cool, I probably would, helping you to viralize your channel. BTW, was that you on the vocal? Great job with the song!

    Back to youttube...
Clue #5-All of the most watched videos I saw had a story, even if it was just a silly stunt, or was less than 2 min long, they each took me on a little journey that had a real beginning, middle and an end.

Clue #6-Some of the stories were a part of a larger/longer theme that is a part of a series. That makes us want to subscribe so we don't miss the next one.

Having said all that, I'm sure there are lots of secret ninja tricks the youtube gurus use to get their view counts up. Can't comment on that. Hope they'll share.

Aside from the above, I wonder if its really just views that you are after. Are you perhaps actually interested in the quality of your traffic, the building of a list and then conversion of those prospects over time to customers?

Be interesting to hear what the real Dark Knights have to say about how they do it. -CP
