I had a client install WP inside of the wp-admin folder instead of the root folder so the main page of his site is in this format:

http://www.domain.com/wp-admin

Is there a way to move it all out of the wp-admin folder to the root folder without screwing anything up? Or is it best just to delete the site and start all over again?

Do you mean to login to his WP admin panel he has to go to:
    example.com/wp-admin/wp-admin/ ?

I really have no experience with WP. But i'm pretty sure you could just move it all around, and re upload it to your server? FileZilla is good for that.

Then you should NOT reply. Leave it to those that do have experience. Don't guess... you can screw up somebody's website!

    LOL

Here is the short version of the move:
    - login to example.com/wp-admin/wp-admin/
    - go Settings > General
    - change the 2 URLs (WordPress address and Site address) to the correct location; i.e. example.com
    - Save changes (at the bottom)
    - It will throw you an error message - DISREGARD IT!
    - do NOT, repeat, do not try to see the blog's frontend

    - move all the WP files and folders to their correct location via FTP: from that subfolder to the root

You may need to reset the permalinks to make it work. (Hopefully, there aren't media files uploaded and linked to...)

I do have experience with Wordpress but to be honest I would probably just reinstall from scratch.

However Istvan's post is awesome - that looks like it would work, in fact I am 90% sure it would!

      Awesome post!

There is a 10% difference between us - it works 100%.

Thanks for the kind words, btw!

I tried this and when I tried to move all of the files to the root, I got an error and they all disappeared.

Looks like I'll be re-building the site.

I did this once before a couple years ago (saved it into a different wrong folder though) and I could be wrong but I think all I did was save my theme exactly how it was, deleted it out of the wrong root and then re-uploaded it. Hope this helps!

If the site has images in the posts and pages the image links will mostly be broken when doing as Istvaan writes. Its the correct action but you will need to edit the image links in the database as well.
There should be scripts around that fixes it for you.

There is. It's a plugin, called "Search & Replace".

Very easy to use, if needed (as I mentioned referring to uploaded media).

You type in the old URL and the new one and it goes through the defined portions of the database and replaces
      example.com/wp-admin/wp-content/uploads/ (old URL)
      with
      example.com/wp-content/uploads/ (new URL)

Knowing this could be an issue, I added at the end of my post:
(Hopefully, there aren't media files uploaded and linked to...)
The plugin is also very useful to correct the links to uploaded media (images, video, whatever) when you move a WP installation from one domain to another.

However, knowing the users always get overwhelmed by too many instructions... I go with one step at a time

You can get a free FTP uploader. I like ALFTP because it has the simplest user interface.

If you do it that way, you can actually see where the file is in the wp-admin folder and physically pull it out and move it to the location you want it.

    Jennifer,

sorry to hear that. I have been doing this (and advising others to do it) for many years. It must have been a glitch... or the original setup was way worse than you've presented.

Just for my own learning experience I wouldn't mind taking a look at that setup - if it's possible. PM me if you wish...

It wasn't your instructions. They were the same as the guy above who directed me to the WordPress FAQ site. It's just when I moved them via FTP it said something like "wp-admin folder cannot be retrieved" and all of the files were gone. I'm sure it's something I did wrong.

And I would let you look at the setup if it was my own server and host, but this is for a client and I have to keep it confidential.

Thanks a million for your help!
