Bots just auto adding anyone and everyone.
Much the same as happened with myspace.

I AM following people ( 7 in total).

  Some people like to build big lists of people to follow in the hope that those people will politely follow them back. Why do they do this? So that they can send out promotional tweets about their latest launches and incessent blog posts.
  
  It is just the same as building an email list, only far more intrusive (and questionably effective).
  
  Let's assume I want to sell to Internet marketers and think that building a Twitter following that is targeted to that market is a good idea. How would I do it? Easy. I would look for well-known twitterers who are totally focused on IM. Clickbank is a perfect example.
  
  Who follows who is a matter of public record on Twitter, so getting a list of all their followers is dead easy. Then I'd just go through that list and follow them all myself.
  
  There is a certain feeling among twitterers that they should follow back people who follow them, so a new focused list is born.
  
  The find a new authority twit with a big following and cull that list too.
  
  Then bombard your shiny new following with promotions and ads.
  
  The best thing you can do is ignore the people who have followed you - especially if you are not tweeting yourself and are staying anonymous. if you don't follow them back they can't annoy you with their promotions.

The footprints just means others can find and follow you as long as you are following someone. Someone may just add all the Clickbank followers to follow. Twitter can be used to market your product or services so it can be a good thing.

Harvey I just went in and you are following 99 people, but here is what also happens. People are told to find people who had a large following, and you are following one of those people. They then click on their profile and follow as many as they can from there.

Now follow me, I'm a Brit and John Taylor, and Paul Duxbury, and Peter Bestel and Jay Xtreme and any other Brit you can think of

Because your Twitter updates are NOT protected (like mine are!)
anyone who 'finds' you on Twitter can follow you.

If you click on SETTINGS, you'll find a checkbox that reads
"protect my updates" - when you select that, you get to
'approve' of anyone who wants to follow you.

For the sake of argument - why NOT let people follow you and see your updates on Twitter? I'm not saying that everyone needs to use my methods, which is to build up a huge follower base, but Twitter can be used very effectively to network, to meet new people, both potential friends and potential business partners and clients, etc.,

And not everyone with a huge crowd of followers is spamming them. I don't, and if people do nothing but send out promotional links, I un-follow them.

In fact, most don't even have one!

In SOCIAL WINS, I teach strategy setting for social media marketing.
Here are some critical questions to ask and answer before you get
started:

1. Who is your audience? Whom are you trying to reach?

2. What do they do? Are they already on social networks? Why?

3. What do you want them to do?

4. What do you expect will happen when they do?

5. What could go wrong - and how will you deal with it?

6. Who or what do you need to implement your social media plans?

So, depending upon YOUR strategy, having many followers or a few,
opening up your Twitter stream to many or no one, spending all
day on such networks or very little - each may be right.

Although I haven't taken the step to protect my updates..

I do see the reason, the point and the fact that it is a very clever thing to do in terms of making your followers a more "targeted" list of people who have an interest in what you have to say/offer.. almost like an opt-in.

Your tweet stream is highly relevant to those that take that extra effort to wait on your accepting of them seeing what you tweet.

Yes - that is a possible explanation.

I'm a bit puzzled though why one of my followers is a very well
known top marketer who would surely have more effective ways of
promotion

The only (very trivial) problem is that I get emails each time a follower
joins but would protection just lead to a different type of email
(one requesting approval) ?

i have to admit im not into the how web 2.0 thing yet and all the social sites it seemed to have happened over night to me i went to twitter a couple times just to see what all the fuss was about but dont really seem why its so great lol maybe need to read up on it a little more

It's the same with Myspace, I get "friends" and I have nothing listed yet
on Myspace. It could be the name or title you have that people search for.

Twitter is a social platform to mingle with others and share updates in your daily life.
Some use twitter for social purpose only, while others use it to drive traffic to their sites.
If you are following click bank then someone might want to be friends with everyone related to click bank and so on.

I just can't get into the 'I follow you, so now you have to follow me' mentality.

If this is what people want, why not ask Twitter to simply create a page that streams every single post to everyone else? That way, everybody is following everyone! Nobody misses a single thing in anyone's life!

That's not going to be something requested because no one is *really* interested in taking in the thoughts and ramblings of 1000's of people a day.

To me, the reason some take the 'follow anybody and everybody' approach is because it's really nothing more than a way of gaming the system to inflate popularity, but to me, it's not worth it.

I really don't like saying that, because I am *very* much into the practice of finding the silver-lining with just about everything, but I just can't seem to with this idea.

Give me quality over quantity. Give me 10 good interactions with 1 person over 1 'passing' interactions with 10 different people.

Seriously. I can't imagine how anyone with 5000 followers could ever give a flying-hoot about my posts - so why follow me for the sake of following?

I wonder how many people would drop the 'follow everyone you possibly can' mentality if there were -0- popularity benefits.

On Twitter, I try to post a friendly mix of status updates (my Facebook status automatically changes to match) and links to Squidoo lenses, CafePress, my blog.

To find new people to follow, I use a search like Tweet Scan to see who else likes things I like.

I hope I'm doing it right. I'm surprised over 700 people follow me ... I guess as long as that grows rather than shrinks I can't complain.
