What's the absolute BIGGEST thing you're concern about when it comes to your site?

I thought this was a no-brainer, I thought it was traffic, but it seems as though it's some people whose biggest concern is other than traffic.
-Some people say content, but wouldn't content be the means to more traffic? -Some people say conversions, but wouldn't more traffic mean more conversions?
- Some people say just to build it up to sell it, hey more traffic would help!

So traffic SHOULD be a webmaster's BIGGEST concern right? (Or wrong?)

Having visitors and good content is useless if the website is messed up in some browsers(and yes, you will notice differences if you will test it on all major 5 browsers).
A good CMS will solve that easily, and after it looks good then what? That's not an ongoing problem... what's your MAIN concern about your website?

There is not one answer to your question.

What is important will depend on the site. Some sites are branding, some are retail, some are authority builders, some are just search engine fodder - it all depends what your business is, what your most desired response from your visitors is, and how you market your business and get visitors to it.

If you're offering architecture services and your traffic comes to the site from image galleries that are showing the images you've taken of previous work - then no amount of increased traffic is likely to get you a new customer.

If your architecture website gets traffic from you speaking at design/architecture/construction conferences then a few extra visitors may convert into several new customers.

The problem with IMers is that they tend to think the metric IS the value. So Traffic = money, which is just not the case at all.

Some people over-simplify things to the point where they just want to say >> Traffic x Conversion = Money.

In truth all aspects are variable and dependent on your niche, your business model, your marketing methods and your implementation. It's different for every business.

  • Conversions, of course.

A site is nothing but a meaning to get someone (your traffic) to perform an action (buy a product, join your mailing list, click a specific link, etc). So, from that point of view, the only thing that matters is maximizing conversions.

      That's not strictly true.

I have clients whose website is simply there to support the messaging that they give when meeting their prospects in person. They have ZERO expectation of those people taking any action at the website other than reading the content to learn more about the company and people.

Not all websites are there to sell stuff and build email lists.

Well, first of all this is the Warrior Forum, an Internet Marketing orientated forum, thus the majority of our sites do indeed try to sell, pitch, promote, advertise, squeeze, etc.

At any rate, every single website has a goal: either to sell a product, or to build a mailing list, or to distribute some information, or to share my weekend pictures with my untie Phoebe, etc. Whatever it is, it's created for a specific purpose. Therefore, if you have a goal, then by definition you have a conversion ratio, and it can be tracked, tweaked and maximized... THAT should be a number-one priority for ANY web admin, regardless of whatever goal you're trying to achieve with your site.

Its going to be different for all companies. Hence why you need to define a companies businesses objectives, problems, and successes are before marketing for them.

Best example, some people may have tons of traffic but a super low conversion rate. If they can simply convert a half of percent better it may be the difference of millions of dollars. On the other you hand you may have someone with gang busters conversions but no traffic. Hence, it would make sense for that person to get more traffic.

For me traffic is the most important....of course sales!!!

  • All these things are related to each other. But in my opinion the most important is the content - you should have unique, original and valuable content to get your targeted traffic, and when you get this targeted traffic you'll get conversions. So content is the biggest concern of webmaster

The biggest thing for me is having my site hacked or broken.

I dont know about you, but I feel kind of unprotected when I dont know if my site will be
blown away the next day. How many times have you updated wordpress and something broke in it? Too much to mention, right?

So a definite is having a good backup of your wordpress installations.

The one I know that just came out on the market is called backcreator.com and
it allows you to backup your site and get it back up again in less than 1 minute.

Hope this is a good one!

Targeted traffic is my main focus. Without traffic, I can't test conversion. Once I get traffic, I can test conversion and hopefully improve it.

My biggest concern..? that my website is based on a well-developed system and not just a half-baked or vague idea of what my goals and process will be to turn that traffic into conversions. So it isn't the traffic (although I like targeted traffic), or how the content is monetized (although if it isn't you don't make money do you?) etc.. those are just 'things' in an of themselves though.. on their own don't mean squat without the underlying framework that ties it all together..

    that is my main concern.
