TLD (top level domain) strategy question

Hi all,

I was wondering, if you have the choice of:

bestkeyword.net (as the .com is taken) - or any other TLD like .cc, .co.uk, .ca, etc..

or

secondbestkeyword.com

Which would you choose for your site? Does having a .com (or any other TLD) really matter in the rankings with google?

Isn't it more about what is on the page itself (and the other SEO stuff) than the actual domain name?

Your thoughts?

You are right. It's about what's actually on the page and not about the domain name as such. The only plus point of having a good domain name is the hope that people won't mistype it and will actually reach to your website! ... another important factor is the "domain age".... the older the domain the more preference it gets... so try buying an already existing domain..

My personal choice would be bestkeyword.net (because I don't like the "second" best...) and people are much aware of the ".net" TLDs...

    Hope this helps.

    -GT

if i were you, i will choose best-keyword.com. some of my competitors in my niche do the same above. And most of top rankings are keyword-included domains. COM is still better than NET from my personal opinion.

    Hi Adam,

My suggestion is simple - Just go for the .net EMD (I mean the bestkeyword.net one). If you can do proper link building and continue to add quality content in it at a regular interval, your site will be ranked decently and enjoy some nice organic traffic.

It all depends upon your strategy.

I got a '.me' for my personalized niche in parenting (as .me is, well, me! ). It also allowed me to get keyword.me (ie, no hyphens or anything).

But if you're going strictly for impersonal marketing, it's definitely the content that matters most. So keyword.net works peachy.

      Hey Barb...

Good to see you around again...

Even though I strongly perfer .com, in your case Bling.Me does look pretty good.

For myself, sometimes one, sometimes the other. Depending, actually, on quite a wide range of factors, including (but not limited to) the difference between the "best" and "second-best" keywords, how much I'd worry about losing some traffic to the owner of the .com, and so on.

No; it absolutely doesn't affect Google rankings at all. Among the TLD's, domain-extension is not relevant to SEO. (There's an urban myth that it is, but that's totally wrong - as very extensively and regularly clarified by Google).

I would take the second best keyword with a .com. My reasoning is, if you ever want to sell/flip the site, the .com TLD will very likely be more valuable to the next owner.

I have tried this myself, created two identical sites and used a different TLD, promoted it in the same manner, in Google, the .com finished just above the .org after 6 months. I do however think my idea was flawed and here's why:

I am under almost certain that traffic, bouncerate and click-through rates are also taken into account. Google has so many ways of tracking you, especially through Gmail and the google toolbar and I think traffic does come into it a lot more than some believe.

Thinking back over my flawed plan now, I believe I would have had a much better measure using Yahoo because they have fewer ways to track your web presence, i certainly don't use the Yahoo toolbar.

All in all, your content is going to be king and I think the TLD has a negligible effect. So I would go for the most relevant keyword.

You could have the best domain in the world but if it hosts a crappy site it wont be much use.
As has been said, there are more ways to rank than by domain alone.
