Hello Warriors,

I am what you'd call a newbie in IM. Thinking and calculating all the fun ways of making good money online.

I have all these interesting ideas about all the strategic methods of building lists in various niches that catch my passion. But could use every good advice from the more seasoned and experienced list builders.

Pls do share any advice, rules, dos, and don'ts of the art of list building.
Thanks for everything.

List building in my opinion is where the money is.

First of course is your squeeze pages to gather name and emails of your members, then after you have slowly built your list, always remember to also build a relationship with your list members. Give them something of value specially in the initial email series. Do not just bombard them with offer after offer. It is best that on at least the first 3 series, it is more of introduction, value and content. Once you are able to get the trust of your list members, you would then have a captive market already.

Then lastly, traffic. You need to drive traffic into those squeeze pages and you can do so by either through different forums, article creation/writing or perhaps partnering for JV's, actually there are a number of approach where you can find direct traffic, you just need to see which one would be effective for your campaigns or better yet combine them to get better results.

I'm pretty sure you would be able to get very informative suggestions through your thread, tweak it to your style and you would do fine.

    Just my two cents.

as well as squezze pages, set up a blog for niche marketing and have different calls to action to get people on your list. This could be a free report, training or videos. You have to give people something in exchange for their details.

One of the things I use is niche affiliate marketing which I have found to be very powerful. By consentrating on one main niche and breaking it down into sub-niches you will be able to find tons of great traffic.

Best of luck with what you are doing.

My advice is to look at how successful people do it. They normally have a compelling reason why you would choose to sign-up for their list.

Just imagine if you had a list of 100,000.00 people, you can send an email about a new product for free, and immediately reach your market.

list building is very important but you dont want to run before you can walk

get a bit of experience under your belt to start with, in the IM niche and get a good grasp on how others are doing things

you can build a list by giving something of value away for free absolutely, thats what i did. Think about it though, dont just give away the same old drivel that most do, be a little different

i gave away 6 free videos of around 90 mins - this is better than the same ol ebook which most marketers push

once you have people on your list provide lots of tips and education and then if you have a product that your trying to sell then by all means promote it

if anyone buys.... YOU MUST put them on a buyers list

your buyers list is where the money is NOT A NORMAL LIST OF PEOPLE WANTING FREE INFORMATION

a few basic things for you to consider, hope this helps

The good thing about lists is once they're on it you can continue to follow up with them, and there's a high chance that a good amount converts to sales.I once had a guy on my list for two years, after two years of getting my emails, updates, tips, etc. he finally bought my product. Also if ever you want to switch to a different niche or market you can always sell your list...

Treat your list like gold. They are your most valuable commodity. Don't spam them with offer after offer. Try to stay to the 80/20 rule. Valuable free info 80% of the time, sell something wonderful that you believe in 20% of the time.

I think this is sensible enough. While reading different suggestions, I realize that building list is a serious matter. You must gain the trust you need to be able to start offering them something with values and don't just offer them anything with high sales but with products that you trusted well.

    Hi Tarad,

Welcome to the forum. There's a lot to know about list building. It isn't just about setting up a squeeze page and driving traffic to it (though granted, that's probably better than doing nothing). There are a lot of subtleties that make for effective list building. Here are a few things to think about (in no certain order):

    1. There are dozens upon dozens of ways to build a list. It's almost as varied as how to build and get traffic. There isn't one way to do it.

    2. You should have a product mix of no less than 10 products all set and ready to promote before you even set up your first autoresponder message.

    3. Don't use mailchimp or free autoresponders to build your list. It's akin to putting water in your car instead of oil. Serious business people pay for a quality service or if they have the technical know-how and savvy, they can set one up themselves.

    4. Despite what some marketers do in the MMO market (Make Money Online) do not barrage your list with offers and only offers. The burn and churn your list approach is done by marketers who are not real business people and ignore the Life Time Value (LTV) of their customer and prospect base.

Go to DrMercola.com and subscribe to his list. You will see a phenomenal example on how to build credibity and bring massive value to your list. In fact, I think he gives way too much good stuff, but hey, it works for him.

    5. Use a service whereby you can see how many people are opening your e-mails and how many are clicking on the links you provide. Also use a service where you run split-tests so you can measure the effectiveness of your e-mail campaigns.

    6. Use a service that will also allow you to create RSS feeds (all the major ones do this).

    7. In general terms, when someone first signs up to your list give them an extra unadvertised bonus. This sets the law of reciprocity in motion to build faster momentum. Then send them one e-mail once a day for 5 to 7 days and then drop to one e-mail about 2 to 3x a week for about a month. Then trickle it down. I've tested sequences over the past few years and this one is pure money. Of course, test it to suit your own needs as not all markets and lists are equal.

    8. Important: Your list is a major asset, especially your customer list. I sold a list of 5,600 customers to a large corporation for a low six figure sum. They only wanted to pay $15 a name, but when I demonstrated to them that I had a solid relationship with them and that their LTV was far, far more than $15 per name, they realized the true value of those buyers.

Build your list with the understanding that it is an asset. It's not just about size but the quality of your list.

    9. Since your list is an asset, you can will or trust it to your family or to your favorite charity.

    10. Want to grow your list quickly? Make sure your list follows you on Facebook and Twitter - as of this writing all other social networking sites really don't matter as much (unless there's one that's specific to your market, then make sure your a$$ is on it!!).

    11. After you build your first squeeze page (or outsource it), don't just stick with it. Once you build up some decent traffic begin changing it around and testing to see if you can increase your opt-ins.

    12. E-mail your list forever if possible. Apathy is one of the biggest killers of lists. E-mail them at least once every two weeks, even if it's just to wish them a happy holiday or to give them a quick tip. Don't let the relationship you worked so hard for go by the way side.

    13. Invite your list to become affiliates - sometimes they can be your greatest advocates.

Those are some tips I've thought up on the fly. Hopefully they steer you in the right direction.

To add to what Rod is saying I would suggest that you evaluate your skills first. I don't know what you mean when you say you are new to Internet marketing. I hope that you are not talking about teaching Internet marketing because if you are you going to have a very tough time.

I would find a niche that you are comfortable in or know something about and then try to figure out what people in that niche want. And then give it to them.

As comprehensive as some of the replies are, I haven't seen this spelled out explicitly.

        > Set your subscribers' expectations going in. If you promise them a weekly newsletter, they will expect a weekly newsletter. If you tell them they will receive occasional offers, they'll expect occasional offers.

        > Perform to the expectations you set going in. If there's an event that requires you to deviate from those expectations, be transparent. Tell them what the event is, how you'll be deviating from 'normal' and for how long.

        > If you screw up, man up. (Pardon the expression, ladies...) Do your mea culpas, make amends to the extent possible, and move on. You'd be amazed how tolerant people can be if they realize that you know you're only human. Just don't ask me how I know...

John is spot on with this one, be honest and precise in what you will be providing in your newsletter and broadcasts. If your subscribers are getting what they signed up for they will more than likely remain on your list.

Offer content that is worth paying for to your list and people who you want to sign up. This will communicate that you are someone who offers value and will be trustworthy to deliver. Too many people offer freebies that are just flat out junk. This is no way to build a list. I would create a product of small value (under $50) or buy some PLR and spruce it up to use as my opt-in offer. Another thing, make your blog interesting with contests, weird facts, funny stuff, whatever. Give them a reason to subscribe.

I consider list building the most important thing to do and it can begin right away.

I think the key is to really give great information in a way that helps that niche in a way that they cannot just google the information.

My lists are in many different totally unrelated niches. The key is to tweak and tweak and tweak the follow up messages until you have very little, if any, unsubscribes.

The rest is all the technical stuff and easy to do when given the basic instructions in order.

    Good luck!

BTW, I always suggest to new people to join the War Room. Lots of great stuff and benefits to War Room members here.

Setting your list expectations is very useful indeed.

For example, on my site, I have

    Made Fresh Daily

which is my Inner Circle mailing list. I send out emails daily to said list on what I've discovered during the day (as I run http://www.dailywsos.com , I see a lot!).

I also make sure to send out 'pick me ups' - ie, things that make people smile. I think that contributes towards getting people to open me emails on my newer lists.....

    Hope that helps!

List building is absolutely the closest you'll ever get to having a 'cash on demand' system. To be able to send an email and immediately cash it in is like a dream come true. However, to get to this point, you need to build the list the right way, not by bombarding your list with offer after offer, but by genuinely giving value and over-delivering.

Also to build any list, you need traffic. And there's two main types of traffic - free and paid. Free traffic takes time. Paid traffic comes instantly. It's a question of whether you want to invest in time or invest in money. I'd recommend going the paid route initially to get the momentum going. Pay for solo ads, get some clicks, and get some subscribers, work out how well your squeeze page converts. If you do it right, you can offer a low cost upsell to recoup the cost of sending the traffic.

Good luck in your list building journey. Remember that the money is in the list!
