About writing articles and copyright

Quite often you can see on forums, that people are posting articles. But often you do find out, that they just copy&paste from other sources. I cannot understand is this legal concerning others copyrights, not much information about that topic available in internet.
For example if i found some interesting news at BBC or maybe just an article on someones site and i want to share it with people on forum. Which is the better and legal way to do it? Just copy&paste articles like others do, or maybe write short description of it and post original source link or maybe other option?

If you post article source and author, in most cases, it's ok and it's not illegal.

This is incorrect. The general rule is you cannot copy content, and then make your copying "ok" by mentioning the source of the theft.

Just include a snippet, or write a brief intro, and then simply link to the original article.

Do you really believe this or do you just say stuff like this for kicks and giggles?

People, THIS is why you should take any piece of advice you get on a forum with a huge grain of salt... especially advice pertaining to legal matters.

Copying and pasting articles is a violation of copyright unless you have express permission to use the article. Doesn't matter if you "credit" the author or not. And it's certainly not allowed on the WF. Most people who copy and paste don't bother to leave in the author bio, preferring to take the credit themselves. If you see people on the WF stealing content - and that's what it is, stealing - please click the red triangle at the left of the post to report it.

The proper way to share interesting news is, as you say, write a short description with a link back to the original source.

And thanks for asking, by the way!

If the news/article is from a syndicated source, (most RSS feeds are), then you can re-post those as long as source/author and content is intact and you dont claim it as your own.

Copy and pasting anything is risky. The art of copy-writing is taking someones article and re writing it with your own twist/slant. Although this seems unlawful, if its done right then thats fine.

Think about it, the concept of dog training has thousands of books, but the information is 'in essence' the same, but with the authors own words and style.

It's not allowed here, not even articles from your own sites. If there's something interesting in a news story, you can paste a small quote from the article and then link to the source article.

Posts here that read like articles are deleted by the mods, even if they are original.

From the US Copyright Web site:
    What is copyright infringement?

As a general matter, copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner.

As R Hagel mentions above, forums are generally not a reliable source of of legal advice. It may be a place for opinion but not advice. That's what attorney's are for.
