So back in 1999 when I was a freshman in college I sold a video camera on ebay without having to set up a blog or market it in anyway. I just put it up and voila 10 days later it was sold. There was no competition. Then in 2000 I was making money by joining websites and clicking links. In 2001 I sold my car on ebay in like 3 days. I also made a simple website using FrontPage and people found it without me doing SEO or any other sort of IM. It was so easy.

I dropped out of the online world for about 6 years after I graduated from college because I was working and traveling around the world. When I came back it was totally different.

These days I feel like I have to do twice as much work to get any sort of return and I know I'm good at "working the Internet." So my question is, I guess, how long have you been online and how do you feel things are different than they were 10 years ago.**

i have been doing IM since about 1996.

you are right that the "noise" level has exploded in the last few years. there are just more people online, and more people who are using "black hat" tricks to spam the internet with all sorts of content.

the same old tried and true stuff still works about as good as it did in 1996. but a lot of the easy money and low hanging fruit is gone now or at least its being divided into so many tiny pieces.

almost anything you google now has millions of results showing, and i know thats not a truly accurate gauge of competition, but when google first started, lots of stuff only showed 10k listings.
