Backup Your Server Files to Your PC

Hi

I am sure others are also interested.

I want to use rsync to backup my files from my linux based server to my Windows based PC.

A step by step guide on this, if possible would be brilliant! I cannot find the information anywhere!

Regards
Owen

    Owen,

You can ask your host to create a cPanel backup
in .zip file and put it somewhere in your server,
ready to download (the file would be very big, tho!).

I want an automated backup process that means not having to DL large cPanel files every day

I want it to automate to rsync and not replicate files etc.

If your computer is always connected to the internet you could set it up as a server using a service like no-ip.com and set up an automated sync between the two "servers" that would send the backup file automatically to your pc.

Do you have any setup instructions?

My host provides a backup daily of all server files so if I ever need to go back I use the cPanel restore facility or make a special request. I also usually build my site locally and ftp the files up to th server anyway so I always have an offline copy. Maybe you could contact your host and ask for their back up routine?

My website is over 200GB and growing, I do have backups but I want a local backup to my Three HDDs connected to a PC and laptop at my house, my site grows by 1-20GB daily, so there is no chance I could not automated thos process.

Well, that is quite large I must admit but I'd be very suprised if your host does not take a daily back up which you would have access to if you needed to restore something one day. To back up 20GB every day would be a big job and probably tie up your machine and connection for a long time (maybe overnight might work).

I did use a plug in once that backed up my wordpress blog to my S3 account. Maybe some sort of auto back up to your S3 account could be rigged up?

I have a 100MB connection line to my Server and 25MB to my PC, so it would not take long at max 3 hours, as using 20GB is unusual.

I want a local backup, my host did have a backup but there was multiple HDD failure, so i do not trust host backups. I want everything locally rsynced to my PC.

There probably aren't a lot of people here who even know what rsync IS let alone able to help you set something up.

Here are two pages you may find helpful: Everything Linux - A Tutorial on Using Rsync and A very basic rsync HOWTO (TransAMrit.net)

Cant you just use an rsync backup service like bqbackup.com (popular, stable and cheap)?

    10GB - $5/month
    100GB - $20/month
    2TB - $150/month

You can probably ask for a custom price for 500GB storage, or something.

I already have an online backup service, I want my own local backups on my PC that belong to me in my hands

So if anything goes wrong, I can personally run my HDDs to a data centre and reupload the data if needed.
