Well, there are some things:

1) The lengths of your article is low. I'm not sure whether it's true, but i've heard Google likes sites with quality content
2) I haven't checked the backlinks yet, but you can download SEO Spyglass and check your competitors links. Find out why Google loves them and copy their success.

Hi,

You say you are not getting much traffic, when I just did a quick look it appears you got around 2k in July last year but then the following month it dropped off to almost nothing. Any idea what happend here? I think if you did some good quality articles and backlinking using sensible keywords you would get this ranking well in no time. This has a PR 4 by the looks of it?

The domain came into my possession near the end of 2010, and due to the low number of backlinks it had/has, I think the previous owner used ppc or some other form of social marketing to bring traffic.

If 'Dog' is the keyword you are trying to rank for, your competition is massive.

You are a PR4, and the top ten for 'dog' contains 2 PR4's and the rest are 5's, 6's and even an 8.

Look at those sites in the top ten. Does your site compare?

My guess is that even for a term that popular there isn't much traffic off the first page. I could be wrong but I don't think that I am in this instance.

Google is telling you (right on that first page) what it wants when people search 'dog'. Try and add some of the elements from those sites to your site (if you feel like you could go in that direction).

That may help you. But that keyword is a beast.

Hey, "dog" is not the actual keyword I am actually targetting, but when I do a keyword density check it comes up over 8% on my home page and I am wondering If this is why I am having trouble. I am targetting both:
- dog training
- dog obedience training
and other combinations that include those two words.

Keep posting your forum signature in dog related forums. For example, are there forums out there for vets? Try phrases instead of "Dog", such as "Dog Training", "Dog Grooming Schools", whatever keywords you may choose. And 8% is ideal when it comes to keyword density.

Hello,

In my opinion, you should throw away all of the dogma you have read about what Google prefers and doesn't prefer. More often than not, it is guesswork.

It is far better to consider your site from the perspective of the user. Would your targeted user (i.e. those interested in dog training) like your site? Because that is ultimately how Google thinks about it.

Don't worry about keyword saturation. If you write articles about your niche 'naturally' without thinking about how many times you should include your keyword, you will be fine.

"Dog" is an incredibly competitive keyword - are you actually trying to rank in Google for that? I would analyse some less competitive keywords and write some articles based around those to build up your longtail keyword traffic.

Instead of trying to target a broad term like "dog" you should be shooting for longer tail keywords. "Dog Obedience Training" or "dog walking services", etc. will help you capture more traffic from lower competition keywords. This will help you rank higher faster and get more traffic sooner. Using more varied terms will also help build up your trust with Google. ~defy

Google isn't punishing you. Yes, 8.75% is too high for optimal results, but that's not the problem here.

From your post, it sounds like you are going for search engine traffic. Google and all other search engines are wanting to give their users the best possible content for the searches they make. Since you say your keyword is "dog", do you think your website would be the best option for that search?

Your not being punished... you just aren't the best for your keyword.

If you start to venture deeper into the dog niche, I bet you could find some great keywords to target. Looks like you are also targeting dog training and dog obedience training. Those are better choices.

There's more than just search engine traffic too remember.

Wow guys thanks for all the help so far.
I would be crazy to target dog on my own as a keyword, and know very well that I would never rank highly for that which is why I am focusing on less popular keywords.
What other forms of marketing would you all suggest as a way to bring in traffic while I continuing link building?

Try implementing some social media into your site. This should increase visitor count and backlinks as people share your information. As your backlinks increase, your rankings should increase as well.

Write some Dog Obedience articles and use them somewhere on your site, it will create backlinks and increased Search Engine Traffic to your site. One article is not enough, but you should notice a difference even with one, at least ten, more like twenty and just keep going.

  Be sure to check the terms and conditions of the article sites that you submit to in order to understand their rules regarding links.
  The "dog" market is highly competitive, and so many "internet marketing videos" have used dog training as an example that alot of people have taken this to heart and are trying to monetize it as a potential market. When there are a million sellers and a million buyers, someone is going to lose.

The articles do seem quite short. I'd extend them somewhat. You can also use social bookmarking sites, I seem to get a decent amount of traffic from those once in a good while.

You're doing a lot of good things with the site. It looks good - love the paw prints on each post date. Keeping up the blog will be great for your traffic. Have you considered adding an auto-responder? Offer a 10 part tips series or an ebook addressing common problems dog owners face when training their pet. Get some plugins so that visitors can share your posts with their friends on Twitter or Facebook.

I'd also start a Facebook fan page. You can set up a feed to pull in the title of each new post & update the FB feed. Social media users are very active and you only have to offer little tidbits of advice to get them to sign up to your fan page or Twitter feed. I've gotten a lot from my feeds to then come over to my site & read the full articles after tossing a line out on my social sites.

Like others have said, you should make your articles longer. 500-700 words works good.

Also I'd recommend adding a YouTube video embeded in a few articles that targets the same keywords the article does. I've heard great things about that technique. If you can make your own video- all the better.

Personally I would not go after 'dog' as it has massive competition, and is un-targeted. How do you know what people are going after when they type in 'dog'?

I am sure you are getting traffic from longer tail key words, so check your AWStats to find out what those key words are. Or if you use something like Statcounter or Google Analytics, you will find the key words that people are using to find you. Back link those articles and drive your site higher in the SERP and you should get more traffic.

You might want to expand on those article key words to draw in more traffic also. And lengthen your articles more. Google is said to lean more to longer, more informative articles and yours are pretty short.

Perhaps you should be a little patient and create a system that you follow for a month. For example, you could do 2 articles a day, create 5 backlinks a day and perhaps socially bookmark your site 4 times a day and watch the traffic come in slowly but surely. With SEO you have to be very patient. Or you could use an automated software like AMR or UAW and have a timed submission for your spun articles to create backlinks for your website as they get submitted to thousands of article directories.

I want to say two things for you condition:
one is, the keyword "dog" is to large, it is hard for you to get a very good ranking position with such a huge keyword, in a word, the keyword you choice has a very large competition.you can select some long-tail keywords around "dog", such as adding some words in your domain.
the other thing is 8.75% for your keyword is too high, it is not good for search engine. you'd better do some modification. to maintain in around 5%.

I get most of my traffic from Twitter, I got 200 unique views today, and I'm adding lots of new followers everyday. I sell cheap traffic if you want me to tweet for you, or set up a social promotion campaign.
