Anybody know anything about the new Burger King campaign?

It seems that BK will give you a free whopper (hamburger, if you don't know) if you drop 10 friends from Facebook.

You have to install a special widget ( WHOPPER® SACRIFICE - Sacrifice 10 friends from Facebook for a free WHOPPER® ) , then when you drop a friend, the widget sends them a message saying something like "I like whoppers more than you".

Drop 10 frriends and get a coupon for a free whopper. (Value about $2.50 US)

I'm sure it will get BK a lot of free publicity, not sure whether it will be good or bad...But it's one of the more interesting and creative online campaigns we've seen in a long time.

BK has used the Net as well as any of the major offline companies...Is that chicken thing you ask questions still around?

Viral marketing for free burgers. I've heard it all.

Well that's what BK sells right?

    Lesson:

As soon as you can, do get some type of viral marketing campaign going. it should only help your marketing efforts.

I didn't think it would be possible -- but actually that is probably one of the quickest ways to completely shut down a company such as facebook

It's possible all the free publicity will actually help Facebook, too.

I'd say it's kind of self-implosion. First people will start with "unknowns", then "aquaintances", then actual friends because it is "easy" to do. If they get enough publicity, that could actually happen. I don't think the publicity would help facebook.

If it really catches on, it will take people a while to "re-establish" those friends. It's easy to "drop", but difficult to "add" (i.e., you have to find them, remember who you had, etc). But dropping -- just click a button.

    That's funny.

But whoppers are high in fat and not healthy so you shouldn't eat one free or not!

I don't think Facebook would allow that to go on. Drop 10 friends and get a free whopper? Who cares? A whopper is a cheap hamburger to buy, anyway, and you want to get rid of friends for a $2.50 hamburger? I don't buy it.

Unique idea, though, so that's to be admired. But in the end, I think it's pretty useless.

This reminds me of the old MS threads that turned into 2+ page threads about how terrible the marketing is... yet we're still going on and on about it. Just saying, if it's worth talking about at all it was worth doing, people will remember this--guaranteed.

Remembering does not necessarily mean increased sales.

Studies have been done regarding catchy or funny advertising and found that in many cases, even though the general public may enjoy them and remember them, sales did not significantly improve (I'll see if I can find that somewhere).

As far as Facebook losing out, I doubt it. The app (coupon) is limited to one per customer. In the US only. I have about 1500 friends - of which 95% I don't personally know. Why not sacrifice 10? I would still have close to 1500 (or so).

I think it's creative marketing. Although I can't stand BK food, so far they have been the only company in this genre (fast food) that I have seen do this kind of thing. It's funny, and I will remember it...but that doesn't mean I will buy anything from them...

Come to think of it, I may use this just to ditch a few friends in a comical way...as a joke. Should garner interesting feedback

          Hey Mike,

          I agree.

And, it may actually help Facebook by trimming a lot of their dead weight.

IMO, the real strength of this campaign is how viral it is. You may drop folks as a joke, but BK is sending out 10 "advertisments" through you and your FB account.

They spend a few hundred dollars on a widget, make a few press releases, then we (and Facebook) do all the work for them.

If the point was not for me to get the widget but to go get a whopper, maybe they will succeed.

When I first saw that promotion I LOL'ed, but I have to admit it is creative and is a sure way to go viral.

1 person drops 10 friends, those 10 friends all decide they want whoppers, so they drop 10 friends, then all of those friends want whoppers too now and all of a sudden 1000 friends have been dropped just like that and 1000 people know about the whopper promotion. It will definitely spread fast.
