I use s2Member as well and im happy with it: up to 4 level for the free version. The plugin takes care of cancellations, expiration and much more.
You should try it as well

Assuming you're charging for membership and are not it a position to maintain/secure/support a plugin yourself, why would you only be looking for a FREE plugin?

Back when I was both building and flipping membership sites, cost wasn't important, but ROI was. Actually having somebody I could pick up the phone and call was important, as was making sure if a problem was found with the plugin I wouldn't be stuck just because the solo guy behind the project was on holiday (or worse, got a day job and lost interest in his "hobby").

So many people cut corners in the early days and then pay for it 100 times over later when they get problems.

Have to agree 100% with this.

You have to value your time, and a paid script will save you hours and dollars in the long run.

Time and money that can be used for traffic and content.

Just lock down your registration page with something like Register Plus free plugin and send your new members there providing them with an invitation code. Free and quite secure.

You can do this with an email after they paid.

Then just use Wordpress access control to lock pages.

I see you are a War Room Member so for some good info do this.

Go the the search page for this forum and enter the phrase "wordpress site into a membership site" for your keywords.

Next, in the search in forums area, select just the 'Private Forums'.

And then click search. There will be some threads show up that will give you some good info, plugins, etc. that you can use.

You can also look at the profits theme for wordpress. It intergrates with digital access and wishlist. Also has a feature that will allow you to protect your content.
