Is there a way for a total non tech person to learn FTP?

I've been trying for weeks to master it, and I'm still not any closer. I can see that not being able to use it is going to end my IM career, so this is concerning me.

I've watched tons of tutorials online, read bunches of articles downloaded filezilla, (watched their tutorials) and tried figuring it out my own by playing with it, and I'm not any closer to knowing anything.

The problem is they all seem to start in the middle of the knowledge instead of at the very beginning (where I need them to start.)

I actually called the guy who fixes my computer and offered to pay him to show me this, but he says he stays 'away from websites', he just does computers and the software on them.

Is there some class or something I should sign up for? I don't think another book/video is going to do it and I don't know what else to try.

Can you tell me exactly where you are getting lost? The beginning is a little vague.

Is it setting up the program?

Finding the files on your computer and/or server?

    Or something else?

Sorry, but I just cannot get my mind around your confusion. For all my FTP I use CoffeCup Direct FTP. Just set up the FTP path and login to your website (this should have been provided by your hosting company when you first opened your account), then it's nothing more than a matter of drag and drop.

      CoffeCup also provides excellent documention.

Ok, don't take this the wrong way but FTP is really easy. I'm not sure exactly what your problem is but don't get hung up on it.

Is it the initial settings to connect to your server or the actual uploading of your files causing the problems?

I use Fire FTP which is a free Firefox Add On. On the left is shown the files on my pc and on the right is my server with the various files located in the domains. In the middle are two arrows. One points to the right and the other to the left.

Simply select the the file you want to upload/download and then click on the corresponding arrow.

Honestly, that's all there is to it!!

Try looking for some quick tutorials on youtube.com

I am assuming you are using a free version of filezilla as your FTP client. So go to youtube and type in Filezilla tutorials and you should get tons of them

A simple question: can you use Windows Explorer on your own computer? (not Internet Explorer, the browser but the Windows Explorer that shows the files and directories on your own machine)

If yes - you can use any FTP software (FTP client, as the call them) in minutes.

If not - then you will have difficulties understanding the transfer of files and directories from one computer (i.e. yours) to another (the host server).

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it is just that: moving/copying files from one place to another. It works in both directions, from your computer to the host and from the host to your computer.

As others have asked: WHERE exactly got you stuck? Can you set up the FTP software and connect to your host?

Do you have a username and password setup from your hosting acct? You will need these to connect and upload the files from your hard drive. Also the main page of your website that you upload is usually named index.html or index.htm . That is how it will appear as yourdomain.com

Honestly, there is really nothing to "master".

      1) Once you have that initial setup configured, you can connect anytime you want with FileZilla without re-entering the information.

      2) A lot of folks get hung up on WHERE to transfer files to on their server. Most likely you will never transfer a file to any folder except public_html (of course you may have subdomains or Add-on domains, but that comes later)

      I'm sending you a PM.

I use FireFTP (an add-on for FireFox) -- did NOT like FileZilla and do NOT know why people recommend it.

The worst was setting up the connection, but I got the wonderful folks at my hosting company (BlueHost) to tell me what went into the several fields, and I was good to go. FireFTP is very intuitive after that -- IF, as was mentioned upthread, you are computer-savvy enough to maneuver through your regular PC files.

Guess what - you don't need to learn an FTP program. If you can get into your cpanel (from your hosting account) and into the file manager, you can do all your uploading through there. This works unless you need to upload really big files.

Using filezilla there is really not more to it than entering your information from the host (your site URL/username/password etc.)..and the logging in to your site with FTP and using it like a file browser to up and download files to your hosting. It more effective than using CPanel in my opinion.
