Does Bookmarking Really Work?

Has anyone ever did a study to see if bookmarking is really effective in getting better serp results? I do bookmark my sites and I even started bookmarking my articles at EZA. But other then getting a new site indexed faster does it help in the serps?

If you have an article for a moderately popular keyword and your article shows on page 2, do you think or know that by bookmarking it will it give it a boost in rankings whether short or long term.

I'm just wondering if it is really helping any...

Bookmarking is effective if OTHER people bookmark your site or a page from it. One of my sites has an almost 75% visit rate from bookmarks - good for serps but also good for telling me I need to get some new readers.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

To be honest I just believe it helps the indexing process but not actual SE Positions.

    Yes.

I always get a boost from my bookmarking efforts.

I've demonstrated it many times and even ran a thread in this forum to show it. I posed a challenge for someone to give me a site they were struggling with and would boost it using bookmarking - which I did.

It seems to always help, but then there are lots of ways to do it.

      Andy...

Was this a short time shot of traffic, or was it a ranking boost? I had someone here do a bookmarking service for me when I first started the site.

I saw a surge in traffic but it only lasted a few days and then the traffic fell back to the normal averages.

I was mainly wondering if bookmarking EZA had any effect in raising the rankings of individual articles? Have you tried doing that and did it seem to work in raising the articles up in the serps?

I have tried it on a few articles so far... just didn't want to waste a lot of time doing it though if anyone has tested the idea and found otherwise. I'd rather spend my time doing something else if it isn't effective.

Bookmarking can be very effective at increasing search engine placement if done properly.

The key is to make it look natural and include the keywords you are trying to rank higher for.

I use a special strategy that involves bookmarking that allows me to get page 1 rankings in Google and other search engines.

Any patterns that the search engines see in you bookmarking habits may or will decrease the value of the bookmark.

Can you share your special strategy?

It is effective for short time traffic boost, 1-3 days after bookmarking.
Especially when you have great and attractive title.
You can expect nice amount of human visitor from bookmarking.

As for raising SERP, it's not really helpful.

From my experiences, proper examples are like these:
    - human visitor: bookmark your page on digg, using "good" title that can hook.
    - seo: drop comments on digg page with high PR

The answer is most definitely YES for SERPs if done correctly. Here's one of the best case studies I've seen: http://www.keywebdata.com/?p=258

The key to a bookmarking campaign is social proof. Google wants to see that the bookmarks aren't just languishing with a half dozen votes -- that looks like nobody cares about the story. They also don't care a whole lot about bookmarks on random Pligg sites. But if you can pull 50 (that seems to be the magic number) Diggs, you'll have enough internal link support to push your story up the SERPs.

Likewise, lately there seems to be a lot of proof that traffic has a relation to SERPs, not just vice-versa. Most likely google is starting to use their toolbar data to spot where people are actually going and cross referencing that with their search data. So the traffic you get from social bookmarking will have longer term effects on your SERPs.
