Do You Build List For Amazon Store Sites?

Before I launch my new store in about a week I was wondering if it will make sense to get them on a list but then thought "well what the hell would I send them?"

Im selling an electronic niche and have reviews as well. What more can I give them in a newsletter and what could I upsell down the road that they just could not go and buy from amazon?

So basically does it make sense to build a list from a amazon store site?

Well, what would you send people interested in electronics? Of course they can just go buy stuff from Amazon, but the same can be said of just about any other list. The point is to give people good, timely information that is relevant to their interests. Lots of electronics products have accessories and stuff you can sell. You can review new models when they come out. This is a great strategy if your product is continually upgraded.

Think of how many people will upgrade to the new ipad or iphone when they come out. Wouldn't it be great to send out an email to owners of those products when the new model hits the shelves? How many of those people would upgrade versus how much of your search traffic would convert?

Since you are building a store site, there's no pretense about your intent. You want people to buy stuff and, presumably, people visiting a store site are interested in buying things. It's a perfect match.

You can email them when one of the items in your store goes on sale. Notices to pre-order new items so they get them as soon as they come out. Accessories. Product updates and announcements. New version releases. Tips on how to get the most from their purchase. Use your imagination!

Do it in such a way that people on the list believe you have their best interests at heart, and you'll build a loyal audience who will also tell their friends.

Do a "special of the day" type promotion to your lists, or "highly recommended". Around the holidays they often may be very receptive to "gift ideas" depending on the niche. Include a link to your product review/presell page or store link in your emails.

Some very nice replies to this thread. I have to ask though, when building a list for an amazon store do you stick some sort of a landing page between google and your review site? I don't think it's possible to stick one between the review site and amazon because of the affiliate link structure, but I could be wrong?

Or do you add something like popups to the site to get people to register?

I've been wondering about this exact topic myself and would appreciate any more advice that you guys can provide.

I guess the success of your site will depend completely from the quality of your reviews!

Just done some research. I'd use AWeber if I were you... they have nice templates for emails as well as very cool signup forms. And they work great with wordpress (I asked in live support)

I agree with the idea of sending reviews of new models out to your list. I used to work for a call center that did a fair amount of sales for a certain unnamed cellular carrier . When they new iPhone came out (and actually even more when another unnamed carrier was about to get their version of the iPhone) there was a big push to contact customers who had bought previous versions of the iPhone and were out of contract with them.

Could those customers have simply gone to the store and bought an iPhone - yeah. Was it easy money - you'd better believe it.

I was actually temporarily moved off of a different sales team to help push that initiative. The same day that I learned all of the tools that team used and what their rules were, I began making sales.

On calls where I actually got through to the customer in charge of the account, I had nearly a 50% chance of closing the sale.

I basically got one of three responses once I got through to the decision maker:
    1) No I'm not going to upgrade (solidly against it for whatever reason)
-- Alright, on to the next call, have a nice day!
2)I don't know if I want to upgrade yet (could many times still be sold)
-- Explain why it is their interest to upgrade now not later
3)Oh yeah, I haven't really had time to check out the new version yet, what's different on it?
-- Tell about the new features and ask if they want it shipped to the billing address!

Anyway, that's a relatively long story to point out that basically we were just sending out messages (albeit phone calls instead of emails) to a list that has been built up over time through information gathered from buying customers.

Were we giving those customers anything they couldn't walk into a local wireless store and purchase? No. Was there money made? Oh yeah.

Hope that gives a better idea of how it can be beneficial in a market like that. I know I just convinced myself even more...
