Greetings all, Been doing a bit of research on the best way to take advantage of a Wordpress and sales page combo when selling my own products and capturing emails for list building. I see some folks prefer a setup like so: mycooldomain.com/blog/ <== where the sales page is on the main domain and the blog is in the /blog/ subfolder. While others like to do it this way: mycooldomain.com/ <== where the sales/squeeze page is really a static page set up as the homepage in Wordpress. Is one format better than another? Why or why not? I've been trying to research this and haven't had much success. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Cindy |

Hi Cindy, As far as the main page goes, I prefer a lead capture with a freebie giveaway to get access to the rest of the site. You could use a /blog or /news (your posts page) to feed news, articles or just keyword targeted content for rankings. I'd also be testing different sales pages within the site. Leveraging Wordpress's power is the key - up to and including a secondary install within the site for other purposes (membership sites, etc.) John |

I agree with John. mydomain.com I usually have my squeeze page/sales page and then have your keyword targeted articles on mydomain.com/blog. Hope that helps. |

Hey, thanks you two! So each of you install wordpress in the /blog/ subfolder and have a standalone page on the main domain. Good to know. I appreciate the feedback! Cindy |

Actually I install WP at the top of the domain and re-direct my posts to /blog. I use a Page (instead of a post) as the homepage.

When you say you use a page as the homepage, you mean a static page created from within wordpress that you set as the homepage - is that correct? (Sorry if that's a silly question. I'm learning on the fly here.) Thanks again, for your input! Cindy | |

Yes, that is correct. In 2.7 you can also make a post sticky on the front page if you want to use posts instead of pages.

John, not sure what you're meaning by redirecting your posts to /blog. Do you have a parallel wp install in /blog setup?

Kat, If you re-direct your homepage to a WP Page you can also re-direct your posts to a WP Page (and call it blog if you want) so all the posts from the site go to sitename.com/blog John |

Useful responses and questions! Thanks, all. So, are there any reasons why one format is better or worse than another (i.e. when flipping, or for seo purposes, gaining pagerank and/or authority, etc.) I vaguely remember reading or hearing that there were certain reasons for picking one format over another, but for the life of me I cannot locate any information on this. Thanks for the help, guys! Cindy |
