Free newsletter vs. free gift opt in

Hi,

I'm currently thinking about what to offer my visitors for free when they come to my site. I can either offer them a free newsletter, OR I can offer them a valuable gift (like an info product) that will help them solve their problem. Of course the latter will also be followed by a newsletter (that makes the people familiar with my website).

Which one do you think is better?

    Entice them to subscribe for your newsletter and for doing so give them the free whatever

    EDIT. The benefit of doing it in this way is that you make clear from the beginning they are going to receive periodic messages (=newsletter), so less likely to complain.
