A slight twist on Ebooks, does anyone do this?

What I was thinking, was making an online comic book or short (really short) novel. Then selling it piecemeal!

Does anyone here write stories and sell them?

It would be a huge blast for me to do it!

Here's a RELATED resource I found that may be of interest:

      GoAnimate
-- GoAnimate is a free online service that you can use to create cartoon animations.

After you sign up for free, you can start creating your story: pick up characters, select a background from a library or upload your own, add speech bubbles and effects.

You can then save your animation, embed it on your website, or email it to anyone. Free to use.

That sounds like a really good idea.

Especially for something that is really engaging. Being a comic lover myself I'd love to give it a look and give you a layman's opinion.

Sounds like a good adsense based idea, not sure about a paid subscription. Only one way to find out though, give it a try...

  • Could be a good traffic generator once you get people on your site if you amde it interesting enought they'd be frequent visitors, probably telling their friends as well.

Anytime you can mix work and play together and make money doing so, you know you have something there.

Your best option to monetize a serialized novel could be via email subscriptions.

Viz: Send out a chapter a week, free, just to get subscribers -- the key to this model is to get as many subscribers as possible. You want people to start talking about what you're doing.

    Ideally, you'd get publisher interest.

At the end of a year, or whenever your book's finished, sell it via Self Publishing - Lulu.com or another POD (Print on Demand) publisher.

I'm having a senior moment and can't recall the name of the science fiction author who did this serial-email method profitably way back in 2000. It worked for him, taking him from a mid-list author to an author who looked as if he might break out...

The challenge for you is surviving until the book's published. :-)

For a serial publication method which an author has used successfully, check out Aaron Ross Powell -- 6 Tips on Promoting Serial Novels | Aaron Ross Powell

Good luck with it -- you'll be a ground-breaker if you can get this to work. Then of course you can write another book telling others how to do it. :-)

    Cheers

Check out the Order of the Stick webcomic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html) which is based on characters in a Dungeons and Dragons PnP RPG.

The author, Rich Burlew, has been writing this for some years now, and has monetised OotS using all sorts of methods including merchandising and sales of real graphic novels of the adventures.

Since it's been around for a long time, he has quite a strong following, and I think he makes his living solely from this and a couple of other associated web comics.

I wouldn't say he's sci-fi, and certainly not mid-list, but Stephen King did this with 'The Plant' in 2000.

  • Serialized online comic books are being implemented in sites like www.zuzu.com and www.pennyarcade.com .

Serialized online novels aren't a new concept as well, whether they are carried out through emails, or through forums. Once such project was so popular, its parts were even compiled into a paperback, The House of Leaves. The House of Leaves.
The examples above aren't meant to dissuade you from pursuing your idea/s, mate.

If you have a concept that you believe in, one that is both exciting for you and viable for your busines model, then go for it!
