Can a Mis-spelled domain name lose you potential business?

Ok - I'm opening up myself to some potential punishment by telling this story, but I don't care. I'd probably deserve it... lol.

Here's the story - About a month ago I registered a domain name for the sole purpose of forwarding my payments through DLGuard on to Clickbank. The domain name is securemypament.com. The reason I did it is so that I'd only have to buy one installation of DLGuard, and use it for multiple domains.

But here's now my dilemma - after an entire month of using it, I've realized that I've registered "securemypament" instead of "securemypayment" - notice the missing "y" in payment.

My question here is - will it make a difference? The only time a customer really sees it, is when they hover over the payment link. And when they click on it they are forwarded to a clickbank payment page. There's never a stop over on securemypament.com.

Should I register a new domain? Or do you think it will really make much of a difference?

    I suspended a "lesser" project of mine after realizing a misspelling of the word psychology (pyschology) when I bought the domain, so i feel your pain!

    The worst part was, like yourself didn't even see it until later on.

    Don't think it'll kill you unless it's a high-ticket item, then people might panic a bit.

      Even so, I'd change it, small cost for the new domain and more so for the peace of mind (clearly it's bothering you enough you made a thread)

      True - I'm definitely going to change it. Even if it doesn't effect business at all, it will drive me crazy knowing about it.

      I just wanted to get some feedback, so I'll know how high I should put this on my priority list.

    I always check links before clicking them and if your anchor was spelled payment I would never visit your link and anything else you send me. If I was you I would buy the correct name... After all it's 7$, you aren't going to go out of business because of that cost.

    No I don't think it'll cost you any business since there is not a stop over on the domain itself. How many people hover on links to see what's behind the anchor texts? not many average users...also at a glance it reads "securemypayment"..my two cents, but if it bothers you domain names are cheap

    In this particular instance, I don't think it will make any difference – securemypayment.com is already registered anyway.


    In other instances a misspelled domain can actually be beneficial. Legend has it google.com was meant to be registered as googol.com after the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros.

    Doesn't matter the way you're using it but it was unnecessary. One installation of DLGuard handles products from any and all domains that you want it to. You just put in the location of the product in each product listing. Don't really need a separate domain for DLGuard.

    Manuel Washington thinks it depends on how long you stay with that domain name. If it becomes an older domain name that will be an advantage to you no matter what. You really have 2 keywords in the name itself. You would need to check to see how good those keywords are in relation to marketing. Having only one domain name is the disadvantage and having the right keywords is what is important to your marketing efforts. I would stay with the name and if you can at some point get another domain name but this time be very exact on your keywords in the name itself. If you have the right hosting account re-direct it to an appropriate name. If you do a good job of branding yourself the domain name will be ok in the end. But it is always a good thing to get with a good marketing company and they will teach you how to over come that problem. Manuel Washington believes the best companies are ones that have been around a long time and have passed the test of time.

    In your situation I see the the misspelled domain as neutral, in a business sense, however sound like in bothers you. If that is the case than change it or just get over it. I don't mean this in a bad way, just not worth losing sleep over.
