Using "unlimited voicemail" cell plan for business?

What if I received 2,000 calls per day to my voicemail? I'd like to use my phone for business but I'm a little skeptical that this will really be allowed. They tell me its unlimited but is it really?

Has anyone tried this?

I've thought about this myself...but cellphones can be very unpredictable with dropped calls and such. I didn't want to be on an important call with a client and have it cut out on me.

Plus I didn't want people to call me on my cellphone...if I'm out on a hike, at the store, running, etc. Just needed that separation in my life.

I would just get a Skype phone number...it's like 15 bucks for 4 months. That's what I did. Of course Skype is not perfect either but it's also unlimited within the US.

  • But can skype or even google voice for that matter allow 2,000+ voicemails per day?

2000 calls a day is a lot for one person. are these call that needed to be dealt with? if so, not by one person surely. so it would seem like you would need a more robust system that would allow for call routing and different levels of access and such.

there is basically no way 1 person could handle 2000 voicemails a day and get anything else done...like followup. just listening to 2k voicemails at 15 sec a piece would eat up over 8 hours a day. and if you are pushing these calls out to other people, i see almost no way to use a system like skype or google voice where there would only be access from a single admin user. you could give admin access out i suppose, but that is very risky.

i do know google voice will handle the volume. i have seen in personally on a short term basis as an emergency backup when other systems failed. i am just not sure about how you can logistically handle that volume with those systems to run a business.

    • These are not calls that need to be dealt with.

Interesting, so you've seen first hand google voice handle 2000+ voicemails a day? And all the calls got through? Thats amazing.

      For how many days?

PS Thanks a lot of your feedback

i have seen google voice handle much more than that. i am from houston and a couple years ago when hurricane ike hit, i was involved with consulting for 2 different companies that were affected and ended up using google voice and some forwarding systems as a desperation work around.

the bigger volume company did about 6x the number you are speaking for a day and half, the other did just under the numbers you are talking but for over 4 days. i know the systems can handle it, but you may have issues with them as they see un-natural volume, they may limit your account.

we didnt even check their tos, we just did it out of desperation, you have the luxury of more time to research. i would guess google would not been too keen on people doing this even though their system can handle it.

skype i dont know about, i have used a skype number for years, but i dont know anyone doing that volume with them. however, skype does run their click to call service that lets people put a button on their site and then uses the skype call service. i would guess that system is setup to do big volume, but i dont know first hand.

so basically, you are really just wanting more of an automated system to give a message to callers since you say these are not calls that need to be dealt with?

          Yes, thats right.

Maybe I should read the google tos and find out the limit. I wonder if I just did 500/day if it would raise any flags.

that much call vol must be dealt with complete automation.
    sequence is
voice blast w a number to call for more info
sales pitch via prerecorded message with voice prompt
calltoaction message "find out more at desitanationurl"
call to action to sales option/add to cart etc. at landing page
    closing of sales
