Webmaster tools and Search Data?

According to stats in webmaster tools, people are finding my site using keywords that I am not even targetting. How is this possible?
Example, My most popular search word that brings traffic, according to search data is Dog Breeds. This is a term I'm not focusing on right now.

    you dont have to focus on a keyword to rank for it. although it is unusual to accidentally rank very well for a keyword that brings in much traffic unless you have an authority site.

    if its the site in your sig, its not really an authority site with lots of content, so maybe you are just getting a little lucky.

    when you are listed in a search engine, your site will be ranked for all sorts of keywords, but for most that you dont actively target, you will just have such a poor ranking that no one ever comes from those keywords.

    Would I rank better for various phrases that I do not necessarily target if I were to show entire posts on my home page instead of just the teaser for each? Or would that be way too much text for one page? Cheers.

      i am not a pure seo guy, and that question is going to get into more stuff about keyword densities and such.

      i would look more into trying to possibly target those keywords for which you have achieved some accidental rank for.

      A complete and perfect answer would probably fill a book; assuming anyone could provide such.

      Google Analytics is for analysing your websites as the name suggests. It is not for increasing your number of posts. I suspect you've got Google Analytics mixed up with something else; SEO perhaps?
