HELP! My wordpress self-hosted site is getting comment SPAM!

INTERNET MARKETING

I have affiliate links and banners on it, so I was told that I shouldn't use ASKIMET. I have it set to moderate, but I get 100+ emails per DAY asking me to moderate the comments. I'm on the latest version with all plug ins up to date.

My questions are:

1) Is there an easy way to clean this up?
2) What plugin(s) can I use that work that are either F.R.E.E. (preferably) or low cost (I am a War Room member, so perhaps there is something there?)

You can fix this in the master settings....if not then there is something wrong with your theme

I don't understand why you wouldn't use askimet?

I have it on all my blogs and see nice traffic. (and banner clicks)

What's the logic for not having it?

  I use Akismet which does a great job. Its free and used by millions of WordPress users.

  Because it costs money for commercial sites.
  
  Personally, I just mass delete or turn off comments.
  
  I also use intense debate. IntenseDebate comments enhance and encourage conversation on your blog or website

  I would also like to know why someone would say you shouldn't use Akismet. It's on all my Blogs and does a great job. I have no idea how it would be a problem with affiliate links or banners, doesn't seem related at all. :confused:

You can turn off email notification which is under settings tab which will stop filling up your own inbox.

Also you can disable comments on posts older than a certain date (for example 14 days if you have an active site )which reduces comment spam alot.

you have heard others saying you should not use it...i suggest that you tried it out yourself to see if it works..i have no such prob at all..

I was experiencing massive spam comments on our blogs until I installed the re-Captcha plugin which stops bots and the spam dropped overnight and now I receive just the odd one or two spam comments.

Akismet is $5/month for non-personal sites. If you aren't making that much per month on your site, why have ads on it anyway?

It's also a good idea to ask yourself if enabling comments enhances your visitor experience. If not, turn them off (and solve the problem easily and for free).
