Is Twitter spoiled already?

Imagine how useful Twitter could be if people were adding people they were ACTUALLY interested in and not just trying to sell to. I think "normal" people (read: non marketers) do this on Twitter still but in the IM industry people are just adding by the crap-load in order to try to get more affiliate sales. It kind of sucks. I get notices daily about new adds but it isn't the same as receiving a friend request on facebook or something like that, you know these people are generally not interested in you and just want potential leads/sales/etc.

Anyone else feel me on this? It's a shame to, maybe the Twitter-IM-ecosystem will stabilize and this will calm down once people get more adjusted to it but right now I don't feel that down with Twitter as a result of it.

The nice thing about Twitter is the ability to UNfollow - kinda like unsubscribing.

I have unfollowed a few - but not because of advertising (hey - I am in the IM business...), but because of viewpoints outside IM that I don't share. Some pretty radical too.

It's easy - if you don't want marketing messages on Twitter, don't follow marketers. ANY form of "mass communication" that comes out, marketers will find a way to use it. This goes for off line a well as on line.

Are you protecting your on line business? If you have a website, blog, ecommerce store you NEED to back it up regularly. Your webhost will only protect you so much. Check out Quirkel. Protect yourself.

I agree with this. I've done the same. It's just turning into MySpace, which bites. I don't even have the time to unfollow how many people are adding me who just don't know want to network but are more interested in spamming..

Interestingly, when I first started on Twitter, I was actually annoyed at those "Going to the bank to deposit some funds..." or "Feeding my 5 year old breakfast then heading to the computer..." type posts. I believe this was one reason Twitter was concieved, but I found I could care less what most of the people I followed were doingon a minute by minute basis.

What I like now are some of the rousing but SHORT conversations that take place between some marketers, the notifications of teleseminars, and a few people that Twitter their new blog posts so I know to go read it.

But you gotta take the bad with the good I suppose. It's like "free" television - you still gotta sit through the commercials

Just because someone follows you doesn't mean you have to follow them back.

I remember the good old days (last summer) when you could get a 12% click rate on the url on your profile page just from following someone.

I follow a lot of people because I'm always on the lookout for someone asking for help in my area of expertise. Just set up a column on tweet deck to show messages with certain keywords.

Exactly! I don't even get my notifications of follows anymore...it's too much too handle. If people want me to follow them, they can engage me in a conversation using the @ feature...that's how I add people now.

I agree, and sadly many people just don't get it.

I have been trying hard to "get-it". I have a few accounts i for marketing and 2 non-marketing. The non-marketing ones are not so full of crap, but they are also just a social waste of my time for the most part.

The marketing one is a joke, but like i said I am trying to get it. There's the big gurus who everyone follows that rarely have anything interesting to say. Then there are the ones that just don't shut up and tweet constantly just to keep being noticed.

Making groups helps, but then you miss those few good posts from people not in your groups.

That being said, finding out about teleseminars and the like has been the big benefit I see.

Soon I think I will block all the biggies.

I hate advertising in TWITTER. It is like selling a bacon among the vegetarian population.

Twitter is not sacred ground. Nor is Facebook, MySpace, et al. Nor, for that matter, is this forum.

      They are all just mediums.

Most of us here are marketers. We are in the business to make money. So we look for mediums in which we can market. But it is surprising how many on this forum seem to dislike that quality about anyone other than themselves.

The people who created Twitter want to make money and you can bet they are busy figuring out how they can do it. So are marketers.

Some are heavy handed. Some subtle. Most are still finding their way in that new medium. Good marketers will experiment, test and figure out to how to maximize Twitter's profit potential (an ongoing exercise as conditions change.) Others won't.

Social media is nothing to some of us but a marketing opportunity. Just like any other medium that is developed in the future. It is not some pure place where commerce should not raise it's ugly head. The site owners want to profit from user generated content. Well, some of the users want to profit, too.

If that make some social media purists mad -- and it will - so be it. The whole idea of using email for marketing make some people mad, too. And at one time the very idea that anyone would try and profit off the Internet at all made some people mad.
