Irony... my old boss wants me to show him how to make money online

Check this out for a 180 turn around...

About 12 years ago I was working in a store for about a year, boring stuff but nice people.. and a nice boss. Great guy in fact... very focused and good at what he does, I considered him a mentor.

I learned a lot about business there, even though I was lowest on the totem pole.

Obviously I haven't worked there for a long time, but stayed in touch with my old boss from time to time.

Now he wants me to show him how to make money online, and has invested in equipment (he's just purchased his first laptop for this and is waiting for his broadband connection to be switched on).

Complete newbie when it comes to the Internet, but it's going to be fun helping him create a new business from scratch. It's a bit shocking to be in a role reversal like this, but very cool.

I guess the point of this is; when you're highest on the totem pole, be cool with the people beneath you.. we never know when things might change. And be cool with the people above you.

    Good point.

Also, it doesn't hurt to treat people you meet with basic courtesy. A little respect goes a long way.

Let us know how he'll do in the coming months.

    Best regards,

    Mary

This guy was a smart boss, and more importantly a smart person in general, and you were smart as well to stay in touch with him. There is nothing better in life than repaying someone for a lesson with some lessons of your own.

Mick, if he was nice to you then your doing a good and noble deed. He deserves your knowledge.

However, my ex boss in London was power mad, would shame me up in front of others, give praise to others but not me, overweight, grumpy and nasty boss. People like that get far in life for short term and then later realize that those are the only qualities they have.

The big enough 'WHY' for me was my ex boss. This is why I have to start earning more than my previous full time job. It would be nice to show him screenshots of my monthly paypal accounts once I start making some money in IM.

I have the big enough why but still cannot find a way to make a full time living in IM.

Yes there is a basic saying, "Never Sh!t on anyone on the way as you never know who you're going to meet on the way back down".

Your ex-boss sounds like a great guy and very humble. Clever of him to be able to respect people for their current abilities and not cast anyone to the side just because they don't fit his needs at the time.

    Awesome Mick!

    Congrats to you!

What a feeling - will be awesome teaching him and if he has already started a business he will have the application needed to succeed online.

Kudos to you for offering to teach him.

Just don't go so far as dress up in a black cape and helmet and say:

"When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master."

    All the best,

    Hi Mick,

What a great post. My first ever job was with a guy who taught me everything he knew. Even though we went in different directions I stayed friends with him until the day he died. And I miss him every day. He once said to me "never dump on someone when you're on the way up because you never know when you're going to be on the way down". Best advice I ever took.

He just bought his first laptop and waiting for his first internet connection? That's going to be quite an adventure in first teaching him the basics of how to use a computer, and then how to use Google, and then how to...

The solution is to remotely control his computer via his highspeed connection. Once the connection is established, you'll see his desktop screen on your screen, and you then click and type away showing him stuff, as he follows on. Remote control teaching.

    The software is Ultra VNC.
    Remote Control Software
UltraVNC - VNC - Remote Support Software - Remote PC Access Service - UVNC - Free - OpenSource

It's a free version (and some may argue...a better version) of the famous GoToMyPC.

Ultra VNC (and Tight VNC) are great for one on one. But if you ever need to teach more than one old bosses, use my other secret weapon: Big Blue Button. 'Ole Bluey is also free.

That was a nice story Mick, and I could say that from what you are about to do with your former boss, he is a nice man that respects people beside and beneath him. It shows from what you are about to share with him that you are willing to teach him in the IM business for free. It just proves the statement that "If you plant respect, you reap kindness"
And also, I may add that everything is not about money and personally, I will do the same as what Mick have done not to charge his former boss even a single cent for teaching him. The friendship and respect to other people are far more important than money. His boss has been kind to him when he was still working with him and this time, the kindness reaps the same as he will be teaching his own boss in his new business.
I really admired what you believe in Mick, keep it up and always keep moving forward without stepping the shoes of other people. Thanks for sharing us your story.

The most painful thing is explaining the same thing over and over to different people and answering the same questions over and over from different people, because these different people asking the same question over and over.

Very cool. I had a boss 15 years ago telling me I should write books while doing construction work. A few years later, a pastor said I should be building websites. I thought they were both crazy!

Here today, writing an eBook, and building websites... it's strange, and yet kind of humoring how things work themselves out.

Now you can mentor him for free, and guide him to all the tools he needs with your affiliate links. A win/win!

On that note, my current boss, wife, kids... all say I am crazy and tthat he internet is a waste of time. (Little do they know)

      BETTER STILL!

My father-in-law (who is totally anal) constantly criticised my IM interests, using "Fly by Night" and "Get Rich Quick" type put downs. He was not prepared to listen to how easy it can be to start an income, and I could see that the negativity could never be beaten. He's ALWAYS right!

At every opportunity he would make some sneering put down, like "Made yer first million yet?" I would reply that things were steadily ticking over.

      Roll on 6 months.
I MADE A SALE!!!!!! Well, it was only $7.00, but it was a sale. He lapped it up. "Six months work for $7.00? Man, you're a joke.

      What I didn't tell him was that the next month I made 23 sales of $7.00 each . . . plus - 2 more at $60.00 each!

Still not a fortune, but I was getting motivated to keep going.

      4 months on.
A steady income (from membership sites) of nearly $400 per month and growing (and the odd $7.00 sales still popping up), plus some affiliate referrals which were bringing in about $200-$300 per month regularly (all on tickover). Mustn't forget the occasional $50-$60 from on-site ads, such as web hosting etc.

      Then One Day . . .

In the usual derisory manner, over dinner, he smarmed the following remark. "You know, you ought to be squirrelling away enough money to pay your taxes on you vast wealth". Followed by a loud guffaw.

I replied, quietly that I had set aside about six grand to cover the last years tax implications, but I'll need more for next year, definitely.

You could have heard a mouse fart.

      The silence was deafening.

A little later, he quietly asked 'just out of curiosity' how I'd made so much money in one year.

I replied, "You didn't want to know then, and I can't be bothered to tell you now. Go find out for yourself, like I had to".

      Cheers
      Alan

  • There are still people who don't know about the Internet?

This brings back a memory and not a pleasant one. After college I kept in touch with my ex-boyfriend through our life changes. He found a nice girl who had a kid and was preparing to marry and settle down. I congratulated myself on being the kind of person who doesn't hold grudges against exes. I'd get letters all about the wedding preparations but then one day I noticed: no invitation came. I called and asked WTF? "She says I can't invite you."

Oh, really? (Gee, Rob, did you tell her I was still hot for you or something?)

A couple more decades rush by and then I got email from him. He wasn't doing well financially and he'd talked to my mother, who in true Mom blabbermouth fashion informed him I was making over $100,000 a year in the IT field. The email was to announce he'd be coming down to visit so I can teach him everything I know!

I called to let him know if he showed up on my doorstep he'd be greeted with a shotgun.

The moral of the story is no matter how much you like someone personally, drowning people will climb onto your shoulders and hold you under just to get a few more breaths for themselves.

This old boss needs to be immersed in Internet culture for at least a year before he can be taught how to make money using it. Otherwise it's a waste of your time and money.

I understand why you say that, I've seen loads of newbies go from zero to full time income relatively quickly... my plan is to have him making his first $50 within 3 days.

He knows that this isn't a 'get rich quick' kind of deal, he knows that it's going to take work, focus and there will be obstacles to overcome along the way.

I know he can follow simple instructions.. which is all he really needs to do.

The most difficult part of making money online is mindset, at least from what I've seen. That's my concern here, that he makes enough to keep his interest in the early days.

    it's not really irony though

Irony is when the literal meaning of what you say is the opposite of what you mean.

In the famous song by Alanis Morrisette, not one of the things she says is actually ironic.

    Anyway, nice story though
