I have a site that gets lots of visitors. It doesn't sell anything, just provides the info the visitors are looking for.

I'm thinking of adding a Paypal donate button - just in case anyone happens to feel like sending me a dollar or two.

Are there any implications of adding a donate button?

    Na there isn't any implications.

I tried it a few years ago but didn't get any donations.

I've had a donate button on a site of mine that has some opensource software on it.

Total donations to date = $0

I'm assuming your site isn't suitable for adsense?

You may want to remove the donate button ASAP.

I've seen PayPal nuke an account because a donate button was used on a page. PayPal explained that is for charities to use - and they wanted all sorts of proof about non-profit status, charitable information, tax filings, etc. - which of course did not exist because it was not a charity. Just someone using the donate button.

A better approach, one I use, is a Buy it Now button, but leave the price field blank when creating the button. This way a person can type in any amount they want to pay you, as if it were a donation.

      .

I'm a bit baffled by this. I've had one for years that has taken in over $100. I didn't recall seeing anything like that on pp, so I just went back to have a look. I didn't find any terms and conditions or information for it, but all the indications I can see don't suggest charity.

You get to the button by clicking on 'merchant services.' That doesn't sound like a charity. The buttons you can create there are Add to Cart, Buy Now, Donate, Gift Certificate, and Subscribe.

When you select the donate type of button and click on 'customize advanced features' you get normal merchant type options.

There are a lot of sites I've seen that suggest donating for software or something like that, without any suggestion that this is for a charity.

I was worried for a bit, but maybe I can relax a little now.

But I certainly will check back on this topic. Maybe I missed something.

I don't think it is a good option ! at my opinion you will not see too many donations only if you have a solid cause !

As mentioned above don't use it. Better try with adsense, adhitz or any other project, but forget about adding a "donate button" Not only you won't get any donations (if you get at least $10.00 I will congratulate you!) but you can also get banned by Paypal if you somehow do anything against their terms

Thanks for all the replies and thanks Kindsvater. I had an idea that was the case, which is why I asked.

No need to remove anything, I haven't added one.

The site has adsense on, but it makes very little as it's hard for Adsense to serve relevant ads. It's my antiscam blog.

I have a donate button on my blog, but I've never received a donation. Maybe I'll change it to a buy it now button. I don't have anything for sale on my blog now, but I may soon.

    Nobody has to click it

But for people who feel like they owe you something - thats what its there for.
