Is it worth it becoming an amazon merchant?

I have an online business selling high end women's clothes. My customers mainly come from ads. Is it worth becoming a merchant on amazon.com and how do you promote such a store?

How do you make sure that if someone searches amazon for (say) "cute dress" your products will be shown on the first page?

I am afraid I will create the products on amazon and they will be lost in a bottomless pit.

Thank you

I'm not sure how that side of things works as far as becoming a merchant through Amazon.

As far as promotion of that type of store is concerned it can be approached just like you do your main site...SEO...link building, articles posted to article directories with links back to your site, press releases, videos on video sharing sites...etc.

Concerning your fear of the "bottomless pit" - If you have quality products for sale and your referral commissions are appropriate then Amazons affiliates will take care of keeping your site ranked well and getting your products the online exposure they deserve.

    Best of luck!

When you say "becoming an Amazon merchant" I take it you mean selling your own products via Amazon's site?

          Hi Katerina,

Thanks for clarifying, though after I re-read your post I had a "slaps forehead" moment when I realised you had made it pretty clear to start with.

The answer to your question is yes (In big shouty capital letters).

My main business is selling physical product on eBay & Amazon platforms, with a view to ultimately bring them off these to my own sites (I sell a huge range of products in the DIY home improvement market, everything from hardwood flooring down to the nails to hammer it in with).

These are the two main reasons I sell on Amazon.

          1) Mostly buyers with Credit Card in hand (Very few people surf for product unless they're looking to buy).

          2) Amazon carries enormous weight with search engines, especially Google. To show you what I mean try googling "Angle Grinder". Who's on the 1st page, near the top? Yup, it's Amazon. How much would you have to spend to get your websites there for targeted buyer traffic? Try googling with some of your own product. It's astonishing & it gets even better...if you find a page that doesn't have an Amazon listing for a product you sell, list it & see how quickly you can get to that 1st page (Works even better if it's product you can re brand - You can sometimes get the slot all to yourself). And all thanks to the big A. I can't emphasise how powerful this is. There are many unbranded products I sell that get higher Amazon placements than the main brands own websites!

Like any IM market you need to do your keyword research. If you're unsure how to best do this, outsource it to a keyword expert. Unlike eBay, Amazon product titles can be pretty long so there's plenty of room for those all important buyer keywords.

I hope that helps & I hope you give it a go & start listing. If I can help you at all feel free to email me (I can't PM yet as I don't have enough posts) mullguy (at) virginmedia (dot) com.

If you have traffic then you can become an affiliate of any company because you know that there is traffic to see your listings
