Started lengthening my posts, traffic gone

As the title says, I've began to lengthen my posts, and my limited traffic is now gone. I post once daily is this too much?
I used to get like 30 to 40 visits a day, now I'm getting 4 or 5?

Are you getting traffic to your site using SEO?

If so, are you actively building links to your posts?

As a follow up to my previous post, aside from making my articles longer, the only other thing I have done is move my "Facebook" like button to above posts instead of below them.

Yeah I'm actively recruiting links, all of which are on topic.

Should I be uploading a sitemap each week after I've updated my site with new content? If not, how often do I need to update my sitemap and submit it? Cheers.

Well, with Google it's really hard to know exactly what they want.

However, there are a few things that I have noticed that can cause you ranking to drop (post-panda updates).

    1. Using a blog tag section or plugin.
    2. Lots of ads on your webpage (especially adsense ads)
    3. Changing or re-purposing old content. I've seen people change content that was ranking number 1 for their keyword and then had it drop several rankings down.
    4. Building links only to your homepage.

As I said earlier, it's hard to tell with Google. Maybe they had a new update. Have you rankings been dropping?

It all depends where your traffic is coming from. If your traffic is all coming from search engines, then start doing more SEO and looking into getting ranked in a couple target keywords.

Don't stop writing longer articles though, google loves unique content that is long. Just keep up what you are doing and you will see your traffic go back up. Use google analytics to see what search phrases people are coming to your site from and build on that

I would focus more on building links then creating more content. From what you've told me, it seems like you have plenty of content. I would focus on monetizing the content you already have through link building.

I would not conclude your reduced search engine traffic is the result of longer posts. I find the opposite is true on my blogs and that is longer posts rank better. Something else must be going on. If your site is relatively young, you'll bounce around a bit in the search engines. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I'm wondering if you had a change in position on the serps?

If your site is new and your position suddenly dropped after a week or two
then it could be the google dance.

Where was your traffic coming from before? I assume it's organic traffic. What were the keywords that were used to reach your site before? Did anything changed? Where are you now in the results? These questions can actually help you determine what went wrong.

    Best regards,

    Mary

You need way more traffic then this. You do not need to write posts that will blow away your readers but rather i suggest to write more often. Try to aim for 2-3 posts a bit shorter daily.
