Longer answer: wrong approach. Do not worry about G... worry about your database (and of the moment when they will say you are using too much of the shared hosting resources).

Why would anybody keep thousands of dead data records (comments) in the blog's database just to slow it down? Decent anti-spam plugins delete spam older than X days. But you need to find a way to make them not "pending" but clearly flagged as spam. Then get rid of them: clean up your blog, your database.

I absolutely agree. Unseen comments won't get indexed. But they could slow down your site as Istvan Horvath.

If the comments are worthless and spammy, just delete them and focus on more important things like SEO.

I could be wrong, but until they are approved they're not published and therefore should not be picked up by google.

Do you use anything now in WP to counteract the spam?

No. Also, install Akismet and you won't have thousands of pending spam comments anymore.

I hate the pending spam comments. Akismet would cost you and I wouldn't pay for it just for some niche sites. I plan on getting it for my authority blog site though.

Oh darn. I meant to say:

Unseen comments won't get indexed. But they could slow down your site as Istvan Horvath mentioned.

My apologies for a stupid typo. Thanks for having a good sense of humor about it, lol.

Nope, but they stuffs your e-mail box.

I'm wondering why couldn't those tools spam my blog with a dash in my url.

I really hope not. theres nothing I hate more than even seeing them in my inbox - they make me cringe, it's so obvious that theyve never been to your site
