Crying You A River Of Info

**DISCLAIMER** The following information is based on my own
experience and is in no way to be taken as fact, gospel or anything
other than what has worked for me. In other words, proceed at your
own risk.

1. Don't Be A Wall Flower.

Did you listen to Veges Vince's radio show last night? The man wears his
manhood on his chest. If he had any more personality you'd have to scrape
it off the ceiling.

You're never going to get anywhere in this business if you're a wallflower.
You need to have some kind of personality.

Whether it's Kevin Riley's hamsters running amok in Osaka or Bev Clement
doing her Sherlock Holmes shtick and busting every living scam artist
that's ever graced these halls.

For crying out loud...do something to make yourself noticed.

Otherwise you're going to find yourself crawling into a McDonalds begging
for an application to flip burgers.

2. Stop Crying About Not Making Money

Nobody cares. We've all got our own problems. If you're having problems
with your business, don't complain about it...just fix it.

Don't know how? Get a proven mentor with a track record to help you.
Offer to clean his dishes if you have to if you can't afford to pay him.
There are plenty of guys who are looking for assistants. This can be your
chance to work for somebody and learn something.

Make sure you have something to bring to the table for these folks.
They're not going to hire you just because you have a pretty face. Unless
of course it's Vince. He'll hire anything in a skirt that looks good. But you
fellows better have more to bring to the table than that. So look over
your list of skills and see what you can do that has some value.

And then make sure you're actually learning while you're doing.

If you can afford to pay for the mentoring, even better.

If you can't afford mentoring and have no skills to offer, then ask some
people who know what some good material would be to begin learning
from. Everybody is going to have their own opinion on this, so consider
the source. Look to those who are most trusted.

Is it a perfect solution? No, nothing is.

But doing what you're doing and getting nowhere doing it is certainly not
the answer.

Less complaining and more doing.

3. Work On Honing Your Skills

If I couldn't write, I'd be at that McDonald's right now. I know a lot of
people say that you don't need skills to make it in this business. Just
outsource everything. Well, if you're living in a chicken shack with just
enough money to scrape together for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches,
outsourcing may not be at the top of your list of things readily available
to you.

And no, not everybody has the collateral to take out a loan or friends
that are willing to give them money.

Sometimes, we are just on our own left to our own devices and that's all
there is to it. So you make do with what you have.

By learning a skill, which can be done at zero cost, you give yourself a
tool that is invaluable to earning a living online.

Think about it.

Any of these skills can be used to go into freelancing and making money
without having to sell a darn thing.

Article Writing
Copywriting
Web Design
Graphic Design
Programming

And there's lots more.

Learn something...anything. Work as hard as you can to master it. No, it's
not easy. Nobody said it was.

It all comes down to how bad you want it.

4. Discipline Yourself...Get Serious

You're either running a business or you have a hobby. You want a hobby?
Fine. Just don't expect a business income. Again, from my personal
experience, I haven't found that you can just throw up a site, work an
hour a day and have the whole world banging down your door begging
you to take their money.

Are there exceptions? I am sure there are. There are exceptions to
everything. I hear it everyday about people who work 1 hour a day and
make millions.

I just wonder how long it took them to get to that point and if they didn't,
at least at the start, put in some very long hours OR have a very large
bankroll to get a large business going fast.

Anyway, you need to treat your business like a business. That means
regular work hours, even if you're working a full time job and can only
put in 2 hours a night. Fine, put in those 2 hours. Get into a routine.

Because if you don't, you'll end up getting lazy and ultimately you're going
to let your business crumble. I've seen it happen to people way too many
times.

Anyway, that's it. 4 things I think are important. Like I said, they are not
gospel or fact. They are just my opinion from 6 years of doing this stuff.

Before I finish, TKO suggested that I include my pearls of wisdom without
signature links. So I am therefore leaving my sig off of this thread.

I am now going into the recording studio to work on my next tune. I'm not
working today.

I've earned it.

For the rest of you, I hope this thread has been of some inspiration or
at least something positive in your day.

One of the first steps to getting leads is to gain Attention for your business, isn't it?

That's part the reason why people advertise or network in business.

And a persona, public image, brand, is good- it can raise or lower the perceived value in what someone is offering.

I consider myself the brand of my business for what I want to accomplish.

          Depends on your business model...

If the product is "you", then you are the brand, and should act accordingly.

A business entity does not necessarily need a face or persona to be branded or successful.

Great post - let me add one if I can....

"Be prepared to fail your way to success..."

Too many people start out with great intent, take early action, are positive...BUT THEN...

Something doesn't go as planned...and instead of asking WHY or trying it again, they cave and give up making up excuses as to why this business just doesn't work.

Every single success story I know experienced many setbacks on their way to figuring it all out...but they don't look at setbacks as roadblocks, they think of them as Gold Coins - each Gold Coin makes you stronger and gets you further toward your ultimate objectives.

And as you rightly point out Steve - there is no "half pregnant" position in business - you are either in IT for everything you want or you aren't.

"do something to make yourself noticed.

That's a rather broad statement, isn't it? There are plenty of successful people who fly under the radar. Having a big, outgoing, noticable personality is ONE way to make money - if you are branding yourself and your products - but I know plenty of successful people who just work hard every day and don't feel the need to draw attention to themselves.

I'm not saying that drawing attention to yourself is bad - but you're saying that if you DON"T you won't be successful.

No matter what people do to make a living, I believe they

I agree with the majority of your article Steven, but John Taylor spoke out correctly. Working for McD's has put food on many of a families table, as of course other minimum wage jobs. But I also know a couple of people who have gone with McD's went onto college and became franchise owners.

Steven the traits you speak of are the ones people need to apply throughout their life. Except for the "blazing personality". That is not necessarily what is needed to become successful.

Many a business was born as a hobby, and grew until it became a business through nothing more than hard work and persistance.

There are also many of us that took that business and honed it to the point where today, it earns more money in a year than a lot of people earn in a lifetime.

You are right about finding a mentor. The only problem is, not everyone can afford one, but the true entreprenuer will find a way. Anything you could possibly want to learn can be found on Google somewhere. If a person really wants to learn, they will, with or without a mentor.

      Great post Steven.

          Excellent post Steve!

I guess I've been lucky. I suffer from social anxiety disorder and at times can barely find the strength to leave the house. It's the main reason I got into this biz (I am unemployable because of my shyness).

I've been doing this for 2 years and a bit - working 12 hour days and definitely flying under the radar. Even without an outgoing personality, I've managed to eek out a living doing IM. I'm not saying it's easy doing it this way, but it is possible.

Do I ever want to get popular enough to be asked to do speaking engagements? - not a chance. I'm comfortable being an unknown.

Before i started making money, I was literally wasting money daily trying to find the next great thing.

    Steven,

The point about needing some sort of skill is a thing a LOT of people need to read, digest, and come to terms with. Excellent point.

There are some problems with the personality thing.

A lot of people are uncomfortable, for various good and/or bad reasons, putting their personality in front. A lot more have great difficulty expressing it in text. Those things can be overcome, but it's not always the best idea.

Consider: If your personality is a big part of the attraction for your products or services, you're tied to the business, and it's tied to you.

For people who've created that little prison (and it is very much a business prison), there's a fairly simple solution: Use your personality to attract partners and customers, but separate the channels. If they start making money with you on things that don't involve your entertainment skills, they'll stick around.

Some of the most profitable businesses are built around solid, customer-focused marketing and scalability, and involve no public-facing individuals at all. These are the ones that rely on paid advertising, SEO, high-return affiliate offers, and similar tactics.

Interestingly, they are also the easiest processes to build to very large success, once mastered.

A compelling personality can be useful for a lot of business models, but it's not a necessity. And it can be a hindrance, especially if the person providing the face lets their ego gain control of their business.

I don't remember what he said exactly, but if he quoted Sun Tsu I wouldn't be surprised. It was basically a post that was more about keeping up with his reputation and less about the person's issue.

I listed to about 3-4 minutes of the show out of curiousity, but really couldn't listen anymore. I thought it was kind of ridiculous for my taste. I'm not uptight, but the mention of hangovers and using swear words doesn't necessarily make someone funny or give them personality. I would gather that so many warriors listened because it was a warrior roast. We'll see how successful he is when he hasn't picked a topic so near and dear to warriors hearts i.e. catering to warrior's egos by roasting them.

But back to the original topic. Like Paul Myers said, I think people try to get away from having their personality tied to their business. And I would guess that 99% of people online that make money, don't have any personality tied to them. My websites make money day in and day out. And I can sell my assets because they don't rely on me to prop them up.

So careful about your advice. It's not all about personality. Some people still use this forum for just straight up marketing advice.

Perhaps another take on this would be to discuss the importance of branding today. So many new IM'ers want a cookie cutter business in a box. When that approach fails to bring them the expected returns they wonder aloud what happened.

If your site/products/sales page looks like everyone else's why should your prospect buy from you instead of your competitors? If you take the time to make your business stand out from all the rest by conveying to your prospects that your offer is better that anyone else's you will make more sales.

So maybe having a "personality" is not necessarily important to the success of your business but demonstrating to your prospects that you are different from the status quo could be.

Personally, I don't need or want to be my brand; my brand and business are a separate entity from me.

When considering the branding of your own "personality" you
might want to seriously consider the impact on your exit
strategy. The ultimate return on your investment in a business
is when you sell it. If you are tied into the fabric of the business,
then you're going to have a hard time selling it.

Richard Branson is a great publicist and generates lots of interest
in his Virgin brand. Notice his business isn't called Branson and he
has been able to sell of some of the Virgin businesses at premium
