Perfect music for working...

I have found that listening to music while I am working increases my productivity and am looking for new suggestions for good songs to listen to.

Thanks,

I don't wanna talk about it I just wanna sit and stare at you. I don't wanna conversation I just wanna cry in front of you cause I'm in love with you

I can't listen to music while I'm working.

    I'm a musician.

My brain starts dissecting what I'm hearing and the next thing you know, I just want to start practicing or recording stuff.

Good ol' 60's and 70's classic rock - especially British Invasion ... Moody Blues being my personal fave.

A little of the fun 80's mixed in doesn't hurt none. :p

Similar problem for me. I start singing along or "air drumming" with my pens.

However, I have recently found that some jazz or light classical in the background keeps me motivated.

No TV...ever. I tried to do work during the EAGLES game yesterday but it was impossible. I got so little work done I felt like Eli Manning...

Unless you listen to Brian Blade... that guy just makes you feel defeated, LOL. Damn he's good though.

I find I can't listen to music when I work for the same reason. My head starts trying to figure out chords and harmonic relationships... so if I want to work, I have to do it in silence.

I've read that listening to Baroque music while working or studying improves brain function and concentration. Apparently, some schools use it to help young kids stay focused. Has to do with the number of beats per second and brain entrainment.
I rarely listen to music while I work but often do while I exercise before or after I work. This combination of music and activity often stimulates my creativity and gives me juice to bring to the workspace.

Music is so personal that you and I will like completely different things. But one thing you might want to try is discovering new types of music. I recently had an audio project working with Indian classical music and I fell in love with it. It can be dreamy and meditative or energizing with the most amazing percussion you've ever heard.

We get stuck in narrow little niches like Western pop and you need to poke your head out once in a while.

I know this is an old post but I had to add to this conversation. I'm a passionate music lover and to me this is a very serious question.

I have to go along with this post from creative producer:

I've read that listening to Baroque music while working or studying improves brain function and concentration.
I hadn't heard that, but in my case it's certainly true. When I'm working on something that requires heavy concentration, I listen to the Bach sacred cantatas. I've got a boxed set with hours and HOURS of the cantatas he wrote (man, was he a prolific composer!). I keep the volume low, and they really do help me concentrate.

When not working I listen to everything (and I do mean everything) from hip-hop to chanting Tibetan monks. But except for Bach and non-vocal straight-ahead jazz on occasion, I have to have complete silence when I work. I 'listen' to music too closely, so most music just interferes with my concentration.

I don't want to work I just want to bang on these drums all day.
He he. That one made me smile. Right on.

Well, I was feeling all old and duddy-duddy until I read right to the end!

I listen to loads of classical music. Mostly Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Vivaldi, but pretty much any classical is great for working.

Having said that, I rediscovered Mike Oldfield yesterday, and am just listening to Tubular Bells yet again, having listened to quite a lot of his stuff in the last 24 hours.

And, yes, I admit it, I used to listen to LOADS of Todd Rundgren, although I haven't banged on the drum for years!

I guess it's whatever helps eh?

Someone should probably create some CDs for people who work at home with soft music embedded with subliminal affirmations and the like to make people more productive and help them concentrate.

How cool would that be? I've read that listening to classical music improves your IQ. There's probably already something like that out there and if there isn't there's a new idea for you.

      Hello, Mrs. Johnson:

Great topic thread! I listen to music while working on the computer or online only sometimes.

If what I am doing doesn't require a lot of attention and focus, I listen to music.

If what I am doing requires some intense focus, I can't listen to music; it distracts me too much. I enjoy the creativity in the composition and presentation and I start listening intently to that, then can't focus on my work!

When I do listen to music, I listen to Sky.fm, the New Age channel in particular. Check it out

Classical music stimulates brain wave activity. Try Mozart, Handel, Tchaikovsky.

If I'm writing I tend to stay away from songs with lyrics because I end up listening to the words which becomes a little distracting.
