Hey,

So I have been on these forum's for a while and everyday i see posts about wordpress this wordpress that but i still have never used it until this point.

So I am starting my first blog because i think i have found a unused traffic method that could be extremely profitable!

Anyway I have a ton of questions about wordpress because i just started but ill go easy on you guys for now . haha

Edit: All my first questions were answered it apparently the person that i am doing this project or blog with had some photo shop skills that i was unaware of so i just got back home to read this forum and he showed me the blog: http://adam.homegrowncnc.com/SportsNews/ That is just the domain name until the dns kicks in.

Let me know what you guys think.

But besides that i think im good for now!

Thanks in advanced,

Eric

    Hi Eric,

Yes, you can set up a separate page, you would need to do this on your dashboard.

When you go to write a new post, look and there will be a section called page. Click on that, and you'll be able to create a page and add any content you want on your blog.

For a sports theme, just google WordPress themes+sports and see if you can find any templates there.

Good luck with your WordPress blog.

    Michelle

that plugin is buggy...but it may have been updated by now..

you don't need a plugin to insert GA

just copy the GA code and paste in your theme's footer.php file before
      </body>

Is this via wordpress.com or downloaded software from wordpress.org?

If its wordpress.com you might not have the luxury of analytics, but if you are controlling the templates yourself, etc... there may be a Google Analytics plugin, or you can make a Google Analytics account, and follow the instructions on how to get it installed.

A free template would be great but if i have to splurge and spend 20 bucks i will.
You're going to love me for this suggestion (NOT! *giggle*) but seriously, Google is your friend. Just type free wordpress theme in Google and you will be floored at the volume of outstanding results that come up.

You can opt for themes which are already geared toward sports, but most themes actually are pretty neutral, so you can either use them as-is (including for a sports-themed blog) or you can modify the graphics yourself to make them more sports-like.

Personally, I never use a theme straight as-is. I always pop the graphics files in Photoshop and modify them. I always choose a theme based on whether it basically looks like I want -- basic color scheme, # of columns, general spacing and layout, is the header about as big as I want, general feel, etc. But then I modify the graphics and the CSS so that the images and fonts are specifically what I want.

Second question Can i have separate pages on my wordpress blog. Because i would like to have one page where i can just have my posts and another page for video's. Or one page for one sports team and another page for a different sports team. If this is possible please let me know.
    Yes, absolutely.

Just looking in the editing part of wordpress i see that the code is not html can i have an html template or is it all csc php what ever it is? Also then how do i add html widgets and stuff or will word press also read html?
Wordpress's core is coded in PHP.

How PHP works is that it does indeed parse HTML. Design characteristics are coded in CSS.

You will add items, widgets, etc. "as appropriate." How each is added depends upon where you want to put it, and how you want it displayed. There is no 2-sentence blanket answer to this one. You're going to need to roll up your sleeves, dig in, and figure it out.

Every widget I've seen has come with instructions for "how to embed this on your blog," so look for those instructions and follow them.

Also how do i add analytics to a wordpress blog?
Same as for widgets above ^^^ login to Google Analytics, and follow their instructions for how to install it on your blog. It's easy to do and the instructions work perfectly.

You're going to figure out and learn a lot just by installing WP and playing with it. I would totally recommend starting there. Maybe plan on using your first attempt as a "sandbox" (just to play and experiment with) and then start over on a fresh install for your "real" blog.

    Good luck!! Have fun!!

The best things about WordPress are the amount of free themes and plugins put out by the WordPress Community.

You can easily google for thousands of wordpress themes in your niche. Usually, I find (because I build a lot of sites) that I like to have a few themes to work with that are easy to customize. You should always customize your theme just to make it a little more unique. For a sports site I would suggest that you have a look at the theme by Brian Gardner at Revolution2 (which are free).

With plugins, there are so many to choose from you should use what you need. For example; GA you don't need a plugin just paste in the code

Pages are great for using outside of your post structure and I use them myself in the way you described.

You can put html code in the source part of your text editor. The file templates are in php but it is easy to make a new page template if that's what you are looking for.

Widgets you'll find in the Appearance/Widgets section of your menu in WP 2.7. Some plugins may also have a widget. Make sure your theme is widget ready though

Just dive in you'll have fun

I want to use a page on my blog for this purpose and I'm not sure how to write it or what's required on it. Clickbank also says I need a Thank you page. You can further optimize your blog by installing these three plugins which I discovered while trying to improve my blog's search engine friendliness. So here they are...

    1. Optimal Title
Use this plugin to optimize your post title and display meaningful search engine results and browser bookmark names. It also reduces the chance of title truncation when viewed in search engine result pages by placing your post title in the beginning of the <title> tag.

    2. Head Meta Description
This plugin allows you to add dynamic meta description automatically by extracting the first few words in your words. So it's important to place your most important keywords in the first paragraph so that they are picked by this plugin.
If you do not see your description tag, scroll down a bit because it's possible that other tags may have pushed the <description> tag lower down but still inside the <head> tag.

    3. Add Meta Keyword Tag
This plugin works similar like the Head Meta Description plugin except that it's for the keyword tag. Add Meta Keyword Tag would output a default set of keywords, except on single posts. On single posts it would create a list of keywords based on the categories assigned to that post and any tags assigned to it.

I hope the above information will be of good use to the Wordpress Bloggers

    Regards
