For a business is more or less local, my thinking was always that having the city in the domain was advantageous to SEO and g-places. However, I recently read one opinion that said having the city in the domain was actually a hindrance.

That said, I'm wondering if the negative correlation is more towards a national company trying to optimize for local by way of multiple sites with cities included in domains.

Opinions?

Sorry, could not post reference URL because of post count.

The reason why you put in the city in the domain is to target searches with
    location in it.

Example: dentist houston, replacement windows california.

However, before you add the city in your EMD (exact match domain) make
sure that there are people checking out the keywords. Fire up Google's keyword tool
    or what have you.

If you want to rank for any keyword it is useful to have it in the domain, city or not. So if you are targeting a certain city it would help to have it in the domain.

Thanks for the replies. Exactly what I always thought and practice. To read the page I wanted to provide a link for, google "google-places-seo-lessons-learned-from-rank-correlation-data" and choose the seomoz link.

Perhaps he is talking more about companies who are more national in nature and are trying to increase places SEO by including the city in the URL...
