200 HOPS, 1 Sale - Should I move on?

My first niche ever has resulted in 200 HOPS and one sale. Should I keep plugging away at this niche, or sell the site and start over with a new niche?

You need to test several products to get a real feel for the niche. My testers are 10-20 page review sites with 100 or so directory links. That'll let you know REAL quick

I have no idea what you just said to me

My site has a blog with about 15 unique posts, 20 EZA articles, al ot of social bookmarks, and a few directory submissions. The site gets OK organic traffic according to webmaster tools. I rank in the top 20 for a lot of terms. My sales page is converting better than 30%, it is the product that isnt selling.

Plus there are only two products I can find, the other is only partially in the niche, so I am stuck with the one product...It's a great product.

Do you mean 10-20 pages of reviews with a total of around 100 affiliate links to products embedded in those 10-20 pages?

NO That is not what I mean at all. I have 15 general blog posts with probably 20 affiliate links, but it is all for the same product.

1 sale in the first 200 hops might not be so bad

Who knows, the next 50 hops could result in 4 sales and put your conversions in a place that you would be an idiot not to stick it out.

Try and set a goal to send at least another 400 targeted visitors to the offer and see what happens. If you are still getting 1 sale for every 200 visitors, then you might take a look at the campaign as a whole.

      1. Are you using buying keywords to drive traffic?
      2. Are you delivering on your page what you are promising to get them there?
      3. Does the offer you are selling relate to the information on your page?

If any one of the things above is "off" it could cause your conversions to be lower than you would like to see them.

On a positive note, you have been able to get 200 hops which means you have found a good traffic source and a niche that you can drive traffic in. So, even if the offer you are pitching doesn't work out, you still might be able to monetize the traffic you are getting through something like Adsense or even better an attractive CPA offer.

      • Thanks Jeremy. I am using your favorite method...article marketing. I am also getting some organic traffic as well.

Maybe I will sweat it out a little more. My 1st sale came after 43 HOPS. I thought I had a real winner...then HOP after HOP and no sale. So maybe the next four hops will result in sales

I just sent you a PM

Article Marketing can be a strange beast with some niches, but if you are attacking it with the right weapons, it should be all good.

      Have to agree with this.

If you get 200 targeted visitors looking at a product and it doesn't sell - it sounds like the product is crap or not what your visitors are looking for.

If you are looking for a product to promote, I've just released a really nice one at Back Together Forever - Get Your Ex Back - Quick-Start Course

I'm doing an affiliate contest right now which gives you 100% commission for the first 10 sales you make.

PM me for info if you want :-)

    Hmmm...

Check google for the main search phrase... look at adwords placements and find similar products, or if there are a good number of ads.. if few or none.. bad sign.

A lack of products in a niche could mean a non spending niche, but you won't really know for sure until you just keep tracking and testing other product and see if something sells.

1 sale out of 200 hops... can be good, or bad.. it depends on your profit against expense. It was not mentioned how you are driving traffic. If you were spending 10 cents per hop or 20 dollars for 200 hops, and you were making a 40 dollar commission.. I'd say that would be a profitable campaign but keep at it and observe.. later try improve profitability by :
    - increasing bids on performing keywords
    - split testing ad copy, landing pages, etc
    - split testing affiliate products you promote

But the method above is what I usually do for PPC, I'd have to say that from my experience PPC is the best and fastest way to test for profitable markets, discover niches and converting keywords.

    • Thanks. All my traffic came from article marketing, so all it cost me was time. I made like $18 on the sale. There is also a good number of people promoting this product, but its gravity is only around 30

$18 commission for a product that is being promoted with ARticle Marketing is a little low for me. Unless, the offer just converts like crazy!

I just replied to your PM with a couple of things to try. I hope they help

  • I think that it has to depend on the competition of the niche as well, but with 200 hops of targeted traffic and no sales i would begin to examine the sales copy and make sure it converts.

You have put some work into your marketing, but you are just starting to scratch the surface. If you are getting traffic and not making sales you might want to test your pitch on your page. Try a different lead-in at the top of your page. This is the first thing a visitor sees and decides to stay or go, you have to catch them here. Play around with your copy before you ditch all your work.

Knowing when to cut loose is tricky. You will learn more as you gain experience. Work the bugs out of your marketing model and keep learning how to drive traffic.

Keep looking for more products. And start looking for your next project as you are building on this one.

You are off to a good start just keep refining your knowledge and keep with it. A mentor or coach can be a great help to you as you are getting started.

    Good luck, Steve

My page seems to be converting pretty well. Right now I am at 37% clickthrough rate. So, I am happy with this figure. I am just concerned about why they arent converting from HOP to SALE
